- Obituary:
Sherwin Joseph Atkinson, 83, died June 30, 2012, at the Heritage Hom e i n Preston, Idaho. He was born on Mother's Day, May 12, 1929, in Dayto n, I daho, to Mabel Deem Law and Earl Joseph Atkinson. He was the fourt h i n a family of five children. He married Elva Kerr on Friday, the 13t h o f December, 1963, in the Logan LDS Temple.
Sherwin attended elementary school in Dayton, high school in Weston unt i l that school was destroyed by fire, then finished high school in Clift on . He graduated from high school and seminary in May of 1947. He serve d i n the Central Atlantic States mission from June 1950 to June 1952.
He graduated from Utah State Agricultural College (USU) with a degre e i n poultry husbandry and worked for three years as a research assistan t i n Poultry Husbandry at Western Washington Experiment Station in Puyal lup , Wash., then later as a research associate in Poultry Husbandry at U ta h State University until he retired in 1992.
Sherwin was active in the LDS Church, serving as a home teacher and Sund a y School teacher for many years. He received the Master M-Man award an d w as Scoutmaster for more than 10 years. He was financial clerk in th e Dayt on Ward for 11 years.
Sherwin is survived by his wife, Elva; by Ivan Joseph (Virginia) Atkins o n of Lincoln City, Ore.; Linda Kerr (Blaine) Norris of West Fielding, U ta h; Elva Diane (John) Malmquist of Nibley, Utah; 12 grandchildren; an d thr ee great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; b y a bro ther, Melvin; sisters, Erline (Walter LeGrand) Whipple, Joyce Atk inson, a nd Frances Myrtle (Henry) Berghout; and by a grandson, Arland No rris.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, July 6, in the Dayton Wa r d Chapel with Bishop G. Wesley Beutler conducting. Friends may call fr o m 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 S. 800 East, Preston , I daho, and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Interment wi ll b e in the Dayton, Idaho, Cemetery.
