- Obituary:
Maiben Bennett Ashby, 92, passed away in St. George, Utah on July 21, 20 0 5. He was born June 16, 1913 in Leamington, Ut to Jane Marinda Stephens o n and Rodney Badger Ashby. He married Elsa Clara Wohlgemuth Aug. 24, 19 3 6 in the LDS Manti Temple. Maiben lived in Leamington, Utah until he se rv ed a LDS Mission in Minnesota and North Dakota. After his mission he a tte nded and graduated from Branch Agricultural Junior College in Cedar C ity , Utah. He moved to St. George, Utah in 1937 and operated a service s tati on for six years, then worked in the Bank of St. George for anothe r six y ears. In 1948 he became a newspaper distributor and was responsib le for n ewspapers from Salt Lake City, Utah to Las Vegas, Nevada and Lo s Angeles , California. He supervised carriers in all of Washington Count y and part s of Southern Nevada.
Maiben served as Scoutmaster, Explorer Advisor, Sunday School Teacher, D e acon's Advisor, Bishop's Counselor, Bishop, Stake High Counselor, and w a s awarded the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beave r Award. He also serv e d as District Commissioner of Scouting, Justice of the Peace St. Georg e P recinct for 16 years, St. George City Justice for six years and wa s a mem ber of the St. George Chamber of Commerce.
Maiben inherited his green thumb from his mother. He raised an enormou s g arden for over 70 years and was still working in his garden three wee ks a go. He tried different and even exotic varieties of fruits and veget able s along with the usual corn, tomatoes, grapes and pecans. He is surv ive d by one son, Arnold Carl Ashby of West Valley City four daughters, V iol a Rae Rosengreen of Renton, WA, Selma Ann Johnson Brown of El Dorad o Hill s, CA, Karen Lillian Ginocchio of St. George, Utah and Elsa Jane P icklesi mer of St. George; 38 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; an d a sister , Nina Rasmussen. He was preceded in death by his beloved wif e Elsa.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 29, 2005, 11 a.m., Bloomin g ton Hills LDS Ft. Pierce Chapel, 750 E. Ft. Pierce Dr., St. George, Uta h . Visitations will be held Thursday, 6-8 p.m., Metcalf Mortuary, 2 8 8 W . St. George Blvd. and Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to services a t th e Ft. Pierce Chapel.
