- Obituary:
James Cottrell Knighton passed away peacefully Saturday, September 18, 2 0 04 at his son's home of kidney failure. He was born June 10, 1933 in Sy ra cuse, Utah the son of William and Doris Alice Cottrell Knighton. He wa s r aised in Syracuse and also resided in Ogden, Sunset, Layton, and on t h e " Blue Highways" in his Beaver Motorcoach for 12 years. He attended S yr acuse Elementary, North Davis Jr. High, and graduated from Davis Hig h Sch ool in 1951.
On January 8, 1952 Jim married Ellen Marie Rayl, in the Salt Lake LDS Te m ple. Jim founded Knighton Optical in 1967 and had established 22 store s b y 1999. Knighton Optical was listed in 20/20 magazine as the 42nd lar ges t optical company in the United States. Jim loved his work. He felt t ha t he provided a needed service to the community. He patterned his busi nes s ethics after "The Golden Rule." His goal was to leave people bette r of f when they left than when they came in. He loved his employees an d alway s had uplifting words of encouragement for them.
Jim is survived by his wife, Ellen; four sons, Daniel (Lynette), Roy, No a ll (Julie), South Ogden, Guy (Julie), Wasilla, Alaska, Gary (Terry), No rt h Ogden; one daughter, Linda Knighton Willis, Park City; 20 grandchild ren ; 15 great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Harton Knighton. H e wa s preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, Dean, Davi d; an d three sisters, Edith, Eleanor, and Thelma.
Funeral services held Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at Lindquist's Ogd e n Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.
