Dee Jesse Garner, 87, of Nyssa, Oregon, died peacefully at home with h i s family on Thursday, April 10, 2014.
Dee was born July 26, 1926, first and only son and second of five childr e n of Dewey LeGrande and Thelma Stoker Garner, in Roy, Utah. Dad was a s ev en-month baby and was brought home in a shoe box and kept warm in th e ove n. The doctor said he would either live or die, and Boy, did he liv e!
He graduated from Weber High School class of 1944, and promptly enlist e d in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served as a gunner in the Sout h P acific Theater of WWII. (His parents had to sign for him to enlist. ) He f ought in several significant battles, and was honorably discharge d June 1 2, 1946.
During his service, his parents moved to Emmett, Idaho, and when he retu r ned to the family farm, he met and married Jeannetta Harrison who live d n ext door. From the moment he saw her, he knew he was going to make he r hi s wife. They were married June 11, 1948 in Emmett, and Dee and his f athe r operated a dairy. Their first home consisted of "two rooms and a p ath. " Their first son, Rodger Dee, was born October 26, 1950 in Ontario , Oreg on while they still lived in Emmett.
Dee went to work for his uncle Dick Stoker in construction and participa t ed in the building of the Nyssa Hospital, where the rest of his childr e n were born. Daniel was born January 13, 1954, Julie (Bennett) Januar y 6 , 1959, and Kelly was born July 12, 1960.
Dee and Jeannetta bought an 80-acre farm outside of Nyssa, Oregon on C o w Hollow Road on March 11, 1953 on Jeannetta's birthday, where they liv e d until his passing. The family was sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple o n S eptember 14, 1969.
Dee went to work for Amalgamated Sugar Company in 1960 as a sweeper, a n d worked at the sugar factory for 32 years and retired having held man y l eadership positions, including assistant superintendent.
He was an officer for the American Federation of Grain Millers and a str o ng union advocate. He was active in civic affairs including the Nyssa S ch ool Board, the PTA, and an active member of the Owyhee Ward of the Chu rc h of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
One of his favorite experiences was his service as Scoutmaster for Boy S c out Troop 438. Several young men became Eagle Scouts under his leadersh ip , including two of his sons.
After retirement, Dee and Jeannetta served an 18-month LDS mission at t h e Atlanta, Georgia temple. They made some lifelong friends there and h a d many spiritual experiences.
Dee is survived by his wife, Jeannetta, of 65 years; his children, Rodg e r and Jay Leano, of Tacoma, WA, Dan and Peggy Ross, of Tigard, OR, Jul i e and Norman Bennett, of Nyssa, OR, and Kelly and Cindy Garner, of Poca te llo, ID; two special daughters-in-law, Wendy Garner, of Tualatin, OR a n d Beth Garner, of Chubbuck, ID; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchi ld ren; as well as his sister, Elva Ashley, of Idaho Falls, ID.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three of his sisters, Genei v e Cowan, LeOra McCrary and Elaine Olsen, and one great-grandson, Brade n W heeler. Dad was the patriarch not only of our family, but to many nie ce s and nephews.
