Lawrence “Bub” William Bock, age 94, of Spring Valley, Wisconsin, die d a t the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood, on March 30, 2010.
Lawrence, named after his uncle Charlie Lawrence, was born on Aug. 27, 1 9 15 to Wilhelm (Fredrick) and Della (Dewitz) Bock on the family farm. H e w as baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hatchvill e whe re he remained a lifelong member. In his youth, Lawrence rode his p ony t o Spring Valley to attend school, stabling his pony during school a t hi s namesake’s barn.
Due to his father experiencing a farm accident, Lawrence needed to withd r aw from school in the eighth grade. Lawrence, along with his father, ma in tained the farm, and he also worked for the Elmwood Creamery hauling m ilk . While at the Elmwood Creamery, Lawrence met Ruth Betterley, the acc ount ant for the creamery, and after a courtship of dancing their way aro und P ierce County ballrooms, they were married on June 12, 1939, at th e Elmwoo d Methodist Church. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Da vid (Jero me) and Jeffrey (Glen).
Following the marriage, Lawrence focused on the business of the farm — t i lling lots of soil, raising cattle, hogs, chickens and cooking maple sy ru p. Along with other neighboring farmers, he participated in the commun it y threshing of grain for harvest. Lawrence was also very active his ch urc h, serving as a board member and singing in the choir.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Ruth; sister, Esthe r ( Jack) Kuss; brothers-in-law Noah Mondor, Jack Kuss, Melvin Betterle y an d Ralph Betterley; sister-in-law, Jane (Emke) Betterley; and nephew , Jo e Betterley.
Survivors include his two sons, David (Lori) Bock of Minong, and Jeffr e y (Nona) Bock of River Falls; three grandchildren, Jeremiah (Cassidy) B oc k of Asbury, Iowa, Jessica (Nick) Sargent of St. Louis, Mo., and Jenn y Bo ck of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister-in–law, Alice Betterley of Iowa Cit y, Io wa; four nieces, Nola (Clarence) Schuch of Fitchburg, Sandra Mroze k of Lo ng Prairie, Minn., Ann (Betterley) Donia of St. Charles, Ill., an d Nanc y (Betterley) Maxwell of Bellingham, Wash.; one nephew, Richard Be tterle y of Boynton Beach, Fla.; two great-grandnieces, Michelle (Ray)Woc epka o f Madison and Tracie (Maurice) Poulin of River Falls; five great - grandne phews, Mike (Amy) Schuch of Oregon, Steve (Alica) Schuch of Bro oklyn, Ton y (Bernice) Traynor of Hudson, Tim (Lisa ) Traynor of St. Croi x Beach, Mi nn. and Tom Traynor of Long Prairie, Minn.; and many other re latives an d friends.
Services held at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hatchville on Saturda y , April 3, with visitation from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and funeral at 1 p.m. Re ce ption following the services at the church. Burial at St. John’s Cemet ery .
Honorary bearers were, Lawrence Hulback, Leonard Fuhrman, Irvin Wentland t , Joe Zdon, and Mike Kern. Pallbearers were Jeremiah Bock, Mike Schuch , S teven Schuch, Tony Traynor, Tim Traynor and Tom Traynor.
Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley handled the arrangements.
