- Obituary:
Leo Herbert, 84, formerly of Blacksburg, Virginia, passed from this li f e at his home in Springville on Saturday, August 10, after a valiant st ru ggle with cancer.
He was born in Douglas, Arizona, on March 7, 1912, to Kumen Onhi and Uri l la Whipple Herbert. He married Ruth Parker on June 30, 1937, in the Sa l t Lake LDS Temple. She died on April 20, 1981. Leo received his bachelo r’ s degree in 1939 from Brigham Young University. He earned an MBA degre e i n 1941 and a Ph.D. in 1944 from Louisiana State University.
He was a Certified Public Accountant in Utah and Louisiana. Dr. Herber t h eld teaching positions at LSU and BYU before becoming department hea d i n business administration at Louisiana Tech in 1948. He was appointe d Ass istant State Auditor of Louisiana in 1952.
In 1956 he moved to Arlington, VA, and was appointed Director, Offic e o f Staff Management at the General Accounting Office in Washington, D . C. , where he was responsible for recruiting and training professiona l accou ntants. Upon his retirement in 1974, Dr. Herbert became a profess or at Vi rginia Tech and a consultant to the Comptroller General of the U .S., an d the United Nations in Gambia and the Philippines.
He has published numerous books and articles on auditing. At the tim e o f his death, he was Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Virginia Tec h an d was writing a personal favorite book on setting and achieving goal s.
He was an active member of the LDS Church serving a mission in Arkansa s a s part of the Central States Mission in the early 1930's. He held num erou s positions throughout his life and was called as Patriarch in 197 8 in Vi rginia. He was a man who believed in the importance of educatio n and prov ided financial support so his children and grandchildren woul d have the o pportunity to attend college. In 1981, the Leo Herbert Accou nting Scholar ship at Virginia Tech was established.
Dr. Herbert is survived by a son and two daughters and their spouses, Fr a nk and Ina Lee Herbert (Draper, UT), Dahnelle and Roger Overly (Springv il le, UT), and Judy Spencer and William Harris (Hyattsville, MD), 10 gra ndc hildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, August 14, at 11 a.m. in the Kolob St a ke Center, 1230 South 500 East. Friends may call at Wheeler Mortuar y , 2 1 1 East 200 South, Springville, Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m., or We dn esday at the church from 10 to 10:45 am. Burial will be in the Springv ill e Evergreen Cemetery.
