Phyllis was born on October 10, 1917 in Lehi, Utah to Dennis and Rhoda W i nifred (Winnie) Thomas Giles. The family moved to Los Angeles when Phyl li s was 8 years old; Phyllis attended schools and the LDS Church in Hunt ing ton Park, CA.
On October 10 (her 21st birthday), 1938, Phyllis married her eternal swe e theart, Russell Vincent Peterson, in the Salt Lake Temple. They had be e n married 62 years when he passed away (2001).
Russell and Phyllis spent many years in the Los Angeles area, where th e y raised their 6 children (Judy, Jeannie, Jan, Julie, Russell and Rita ) . After moving back and forth between California and Utah for almos t a de cade, Russell and Phyllis moved to Utah permanently. They reside d in Prov o until they built their home (which Phyllis designed) in Orem.
Phyllis was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-d a y Saints. She served in many positions (including Relief Society Presid en t, Primary President, faithful Visiting Teacher). She had a strong an d vi brant testimony of Jesus Christ and His Gospel. Phyllis and her husb and s erved in the Singapore Mission from 1984-85. Phyllis was a loving, patient and kind mother, grandmother and great-gra n dmother. She tended and loved her grandchildren, and they all adored he r . She was fun, sweet, good-natured, and always cheerful. She had the mo s t amazing sense of humor and laughed easily. She also helped tend her g ra ndchildren and great-grandchildren as long as she was able (and volunt eer ed to tend them even up until the time of her death). She sewed for h er c hildren and home, she crocheted an afghan for each grandchild's wedd ing , and she was an amazing cook. She was known for her potato salad, pi es , and roast beef dinners. All who knew Phyllis loved her; she was know n a s "Grandma Pete" to everyone. She provided suckers (along with a smil e) t o all the children who visited as well as all those who just knocke d on h er door.
Phyllis was an elect woman who possessed the gift of charity. She love d e veryone and was totally without guile. She was always gracious and gr atef ul to anyone who visited or helped her in any way. She was caring, t hough tful, talented, devoted, serving, and happy. No words can express h ow muc h she was loved and how much she will be missed by so many .
