BIOGRAPHY.
RACHEL [KEELING WEST] WHIPPLE.

Source: "Biography: Rachel [Casseldine West] Whipple, Woman’s Exponen t 3 6 (1907-1908):10.

[page 10] Rachel Whipple was born in Draket, Derbyshire, England, Marc h 1 0, 1817. Her parents, William and Sarah Casseldine, were good, God-f eari ng people, but Sister Rachel never knew the love of her father and m other , as she was left an orphan when but fifteen weeks old. She was th en tak en under the guardianship of Henry and Elizabeth Godbe, who taugh t her pr inciples in her youth which helped to build the true and noble c haracte r she now possess.

On November 12, 1837, she was married to John West. Sister Rachel had b e en raised as a member of the Methodist church, but in the year 1848 sh e h ad the privilege of hearing an Elder of the Church of Jesus Christ o f Lat ter-day Saints and in August of the same year she along with her hu sban d and family embraced the Gospel.

Brother and Sister West were blessed with five children, but were call e d to part with one of them. On New Year’s day, 1851, they and their fo u r children left England for the valleys of the mountains. Their ocea n vo yage was a very tedious one, lasting ten weeks and three days. Afte r arr iving in New Orleans Brother and Sister West journeyed to St. Josep h. He re the entire family was taken ill and was not able to do anythin g for on e another. As they were among strangers, there was not a frien d to cal l on for aid. For days the children lay crying for attention, a nd the fa ther and mother were too ill to do anything for them. The weat her was bi tter cold and they had no fire. During these times Brother We st and thre e of the children were called to the other side, leaving moth er and daugh ter alone.

In the spring Sister Rachel and her daughter began their wearisome journ e y across the plains with an ox and a cow yoked together for their tea m . After many hardships they arrived in Salt Lake City on August 5, 185 2 , and made their home with Brother Jesse West of the Sixth ward.

On the 10th of March, 1853, Sister Rachel was married to Nelson Whippl e a nd came to reside in what was then the Nineteenth ward. Brother an d Sist er Whipple were blessed with three children.

On May 14, 1868, Eliza R. Snow and Bishop Raleigh organized the Relief S o ciety in the Nineteenth ward, when Sister Whipple, who was always an en er getic worker and did all she could to assist the poor and needy, was c all ed to act as First Counselor to Sister Agatha Pratt. She labored fai thfu lly in this position for nine years and six months, when, owing to t he re moval of Sister Pratt from the ward, she was called to preside ove r the S ociety.

A few years after Sister Whipple had been called to take charge of the N i neteenth ward Society the ward was divided and the Twenty-second ward w a s organized, which made Sister Whipple a member of the new ward. So o n t he 16th of June, 1889, Sister Whipple was made President of the new T went y-second ward Society, with Mary Jeremy as her first and Maria L. Ne beke r as her second counselor. When they began their work in the new wa rd th ey had nothing to work with and no place in which to hold their mee tings , so they began meeting in Sister Whipple’s house. At their firs t busine ss meeting, Sister Jeremy brought needles, thread and some calic o, and th e sisters spent their time in sewing. From this humble beginni ng the Soc iety grew and prospered exceedingly under the direction of Sis ter Whipple , and they built a very commodious hall in which to hold thei r meetings.

On Nov. 12, 1901, Sister Mary Jeremy, who had been a faithful worker, w a s released on account of illness, and Sister Maria L. Nebeker was call e d to act as first counselor and Sister Elizabeth H. Davis as second cou ns elor to Sister Whipple. Soon after this, Sister Nebeker was taken ver y i ll, which prevented her attending to her duties as a counselor, there for e the work was left to Sister Whipple and Sister Davis.

For nearly thirty-seven years Sister Whipple labored faithfully in Reli e f Society work, but finally, on account of her feebleness and poor heal th , was compelled to resign from her labors. Therefore in June, 1904, s h e in connection with Sister Nebeker was honorably released with the lo v e and blessings of all.

The beloved subject of this sketch, Sister Whipple, is still living, a n d although she is over ninety years of age, still she possesses her fac ul ties of mind and can sing the hymns of Zion with a clear, sweet voic e o r converse with her friends with a great amount of pleasure. Durin g he r life she has shown herself to be a true and noble woman, and it i s th e desire of the sisters with whom she associated that she may live a s lon g as life is desirable to her, and have the satisfaction of knowin g whe n she passes to another sphere, that she has done her work well, an d ha s been loved by all who knew her. When the angel of death shall cal l he r to the heavenly home, may she fall asleep as a babe on its mother’ s bre ast, receive a glorious resurrection, and reign as a queen in the h eavenl y kingdom forever.

Obituary: TRUCK WRECK KILLS TWO BOW HUNTERS
Pickup Plunges 300 Yards Down Steep Mountainside

Bacchus - A half-day search for two missing Salt Lake County deer hunte r s climaxed Sunday at 1:20 p.m. when their broken bodies were found o n a m ountainside two miles west of Bacchus.
The men apparently were killed Saturday when their four-wheel-drive pick u p truck tumbled 300 yards down the mountainside.

The dead men were Calvin Reed Bartholomew, 37, 4320 S. 4000 West and Eug e ne Peterson, 43, 3157 W. 3100 South, both of Granger. They were the fir s t fatalities of the infant bow hunting season.
The vehicle was torn to pieces as it plunged down the steep mountain o n t he south side of Coon Canyon.
One body was about 25 yards from the largest part of the truck, and th e o ther another 25 yards up the mountainside.
The wreckage was found by Sheriff's Deputies Pete Kutulas and Darrell Br a dy, who were operating with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Jeep Patrol.

The patrol had 16 jeeps searching the Oquirrh Mountains from west of Mag n a to Butterfield Canyon, south of Bingham.

Deputies Brady and Kutulas said they had followed the tracks of the vict i m's truck up a fire break on the ridge line to the south of Coons Canyo n.

The hunters apparently drove to the end of the fire break and while atte m pting to turn around lost control of the vehicle.

It plunged down the mountain. The truck appeared to have turned over sev e ral times as it crashed through scrub oak two to three feet high, the t w o deputies said.

Wreckage and belongings of the two men were scattered the full distanc e o f the plunge, and the rear wheels landed 50 yards beyond where the tr uc k body stopped on the bottom of a draw.

Mr. Bartholomew and Mr. Peterson had left Saturday about 1 p.m. to go b o w and arrow hunting for deer in the mountains. Mr. Bartholomew told hi s w ife that they would be gone only for a couple of hours, and they di d no t take any water, food or heavy coats with them.

About 10 p.m. Mrs. Bartholomew contacted Mrs. Peterson, who did not kn o w where the two men had gone.
The Sheriff's office was notified Sunday at 2 a.m.

When a search by deputies did not locate the missing men, the Jeep Patr o l was called in at 9:58 a.m.
Justice of Peace D. S. Walker, who was at the scene, said it was appare n t that both men were killed almost instantly.
Salt Lake County sheriff's officers said the two deaths would not be cou n ted as traffic fatalities.

Aiding in the search were three light airplanes of the Utah National Gua r d which skimmed the ridges and valleys to direct the searchers to the s ce ne where Deputies Brady and Kutulas were waiting.

To bring the victim's bodies up the steep hillside, searchers had to t i e long nylon ropes to the litters and then to a jeep on the ridge. Th e li tters then were supported by searchers as the jeep pulled.

This procedure saved possemen several hours of work, said Walter Fox, se c ond in command of the Jeep Patrol.
Eugene Allen Peterson was born in South Jordan Dec. 26, 1917, a son of H e nry J. and Marvel Ray Peterson.
He attended South Jordan Elementary School, Jordan High School, South Hi g h School and the University of Utah.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1935 and retired as a major nine months ag o . He served during World War II and also during the Korean campaign.

A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was a pr i est in the Wells Ward.
Mr. Peterson married Arvilla Cundick in Salt Lake City June 10, 1940.
At the time of his death he was operator of a service station in Kearns.

Survivors include his wife, sons and daughters: Leon Cordell Peterson, w i th the U. S. Navy in Japan; Brent Peterson, with the Marine Corps in S a n Diego, Calif., and Sharon Ann and Peggy Carlene Peterson both of Gran ge r.

Other survivors include his parents and brothers and sisters, Deverl a n d Harold Peterson, Mrs. Grace Whipple, Mrs. Dorothy Wilson and Mrs. H e l e n McCaul, all of Murray, and Vaughn Peterson, San Francisco.

Calvin Reed Bartholomew, 4320 S. 4000 West, was born in Fillmore Jul y 5 , 1924, a son of Loy and Juliet Bartholomew.

He attended school in Fillmore and later entered construction work. At t h e time of his death he was superintendent of construction for the Leavi l l Construction Co.

He married Leona Bartholomew in Idaho Falls, Idaho, May 14, 1954.

Survivors include his widow; a son and daughter, Tobin Reed and Tamara L e e Bartholomew, Granger; his father and stepmother, Mrs. Ireta Bartholom ew , Fillmore, and brother and sisters, Vernon Bartholomew, Los Angeles ; Mrs . Jean Dobson, Holden, Millard County, and a sister in Salt Lake Ci ty.

NOTE: The tallest man in Rhode Island in his day: 7 ft., 2 inches. --A . I .B. Bulkley

was the son of Joseph and Esther (Ballard) Jenckes who lived in Lynn, Ma s sachusetts before coming to Rhode Island. His father, the son of an ear li er Joseph Jenckes, operated a sawmill in Warwick, but shortly thereaft e r settled in Providence. The subject Joseph Jenckes became a freeman i n P rovidence in 1681, and ten years later began an extensive career of c ivi l service to the colony. For 12 years from 1691 to 1708 he was a Depu ty f rom Providence, and for four of those years he was the Speaker of th e Hou se of Deputies. From 1707 to 1712 he was assigned as Major for th e town s of Providence and Warwick, and was also the Assistant from Provi dence d uring those years. In 1715 he was elected as the deputy governo r of the c olony, and held this position every year but one until 1727 wh en he was e lected as governor, which position he held for five consecuti ve one-yea r terms.

One of the major issues concerning Rhode Island during Jenckes' term s o f leadership was the boundary-line controversy with the neighboring C olon y of Connecticut, and between his two terms as Deputy Governor Jenck es wa s in England with Richard Partridge to obtain royal intervention i n thi s dispute. Connecticut refused to observe the boundary between th e two co lonies that had been established by commissioners from both colo nies wh o met at Stonington, Connecticut in 1703. The Rhode Island colon y was als o having boundary line issues with Massachusetts, and Jenckes a nd his par tner were able to get satisfaction from the crown, so that th e Rhode Isla nd colony "may not hereafter be molested, as they have hithe rto been to t heir very great prejudice."[1] Several years later, in 1726 , Jenckes wa s one of four commissioners from Rhode Island who met with C onnecticut co mmissioners to settle the line of partition between the tw o colonies. Th e following year he wrote a letter on behalf of the Genera l Assembly to K ing George II thanking him for his protection of Rhode Is land's "charte r privileges".

Jenckes' first wife was Martha, the daughter of John and Mary (Holmes) B r own, with whom he had nine children and at least 68 grandchildren. Foll ow ing her death, Jenckes married in 1727 Alice Dexter, the widow of Joh n De xter who was the son of Gregory Dexter, an early President of Provid enc e and Warwick. Alice was the daughter of John and Sarah (Whipple) Smi th . Jenckes died in 1740, "deemed to die intestate by reason of his insa nit y of mind," and his son Nathaniel was appointed as administrator. Aus ti n wrote that he is buried in the North Burial Ground in Providence, bu t t his is incorrect. The family cemetery in Pawtucket where he was burie d i s now defunct, with no trace of its existence remaining.

"There is confusion as to when John Junior was christened. John Whipp l e Junior was christened on 1 November 1641. His mother Sarah 'Goodwif e Wh ipple,' which was one of the lowest social class designations, was a dmitt ed to the Dorchesteurch 29 October 1641. Because only children of c hurc h members could be christened/baptized, John Junior, who was over tw o yea rs old by then, was finally permitted to receive the sacrament 3 da ys lat er. Their second Child was christened three months later. It is no t know n why Sarah was so tardy in becoming a member of the church. Recor ds of t he 1st chuch of Dorchester 1636-1743, page 6"

Town Council. 7 Jan 1701. Rebeckah Whipple presented a paper said to b e t he Last Will & Testament of her deceased husband John Whipple (John W hipp le was blind). Witnessed by James Angell, Joseph Whipple, Richard Wa terma n, James Browne. Angell, Whipple & Waterman were all examined separ atel y and all agreed they had signed the document but it had been folde d an d they did not know what it contained. Capt. James Browne did not ap pea r before the Council. John whipple, son & heir apparent made objectio n t o the Will. Time granted Rebeckah for consideration.
11 Mar 1701. Capt. John Browne of Swansey appeared before the Council a n d stated that the paper in question was the same as one he had writte n a t the request of John Whipple but at the time it was signed & seale d it w as read in the presence of the witnesses.
8 Apr 1701. Council decided the Will had not been read to John Whippl e i n the presence of witnesses and may have been under constraints and s houl d be declared invalid. John Whipple died intestate, 15 Dec 1700, and the estate had to be settl e d by the town council.
