1753 Obituary:
Myrna Tanner Gibson died peacefully on Sunday, November 4, 2018, afte r a n extended illness. She was 83 years old.

Myrna was born in Show Low, Arizona on August 15, 1935, the second chi l d of Don Carlos Tanner and Ecco Whipple Tanner. Her older sister, Phyll is , died before she was born. Her brother, Don Roe Tanner, joined the fa mil y 18 months after Myrna was born. They were inseparable as children a nd o ften were mistaken as twins.

Myrna attended Snowflake High School, where she graduated as valedictori a n of the Class of 1953. She kept in contact with her classmates through ou t the years and considered them to be among her choicest friends.

She attended the University of Arizona on scholarship, graduating wi t h a teaching degree in 1957. She received a Master’s degree in Specia l Ed ucation from Arizona State University shortly afterward.

She married Franklin K. Gibson in the Mesa Arizona Temple of the Churc h o f Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 20, 1958. They had five c hild ren.

Myrna had a great capacity to love people. If she decided you were wor t h loving (and she deemed most people to be worthy of her love), she wou l d love you fiercely and unceasingly.

She served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da y S aints. In 1966, while still a young woman, she packed up her family o n sh ort notice to serve for three years with Franklin as the President o f th e newly organized Andes South Mission with headquarters in La Paz, B olivi a. She was pregnant with her youngest daughter, Liz, at the time th e cal l came. She was homesick and overwhelmed with the primitive livin g circum stances, yet she served faithfully, learned Spanish, and gaine d a great l ove for the Bolivian people. And “her” missionaries knew tha t she love d t hem. Though 50 years have passed, many of them remained i n contact wi th her up to the time of her passing. Her service continue s to bless he r extended family today.

Myrna served in the Stake Primary Presidency and later as Ward Relief So c iety President. She enjoyed teaching, especially teaching cultural refi ne ment lessons in the Relief Society. They lived for many years in the M es a Arizona Stake, where Franklin served as Bishop of the Mesa 13th War d an d later as President of the Stake. In 1987, they moved to the Glenvi ew Wa rd in the Mesa Kimball Stake, where she lived until she moved int o a car e facility two years ago. Her home was always immaculate and invi ting.

She was a constant learner. When her children were older, she re-enroll e d at Arizona State University and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journal is m at age 50. After graduating, she worked as a legal assistant to he r hus band until his death in 2003. She was an accomplished seamstress, p oet, a nd author who was not satisfied with her work until it was perfect . One o f her latest projects was a book about her experiences as a missi on mothe r in Bolivia.

Myrna enjoyed attending concerts, plays, and sporting events to watch h e r children and grandchildren perform. Though she enjoyed gathering wit h t he entire family, she preferred one-on-one time with her children an d gra ndchildren. She made time for a special birthday lunch with each gr andchi ld beginning with their 8th birthday.

She was an avid fan of the Phoenix Suns. Barkley. KJ. Steve Nash. Amar ’ e Stoudemire. Devin Booker. She cheered for each of them. And she agoni ze d as the Suns floundered these past few years.

Myrna enjoyed traveling with family. As their family grew, Franklin an d M yrna planned an extended family vacation every other year beginning i n 19 87. They also took each of their 18 grandchildren on a trip to vario us lo cations in the world (Bolivia, Europe, Guatemala, Italy, New York S tate , Hawaii, and Washington, DC), a tradition she continued after Frank lin ’ s death in 2003.

Myrna worked in the Mesa Arizona Temple for many years. She had a testim o ny of the power of the sealing ordinances and labored diligently to tea c h her family about gospel truths by her example.

She is survived by her five children, Scott Franklin Gibson (Rebecca), P h yllis Jean Clement (Wayne), Kathleen Myrna Carroll (Tim), Elizabeth An n M arquez (Jim), and Paul Kay Gibson (Shellie), 18 grandchildren, and 1 0 gre at-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Don Roe Tann er, an d sisters-in-law Donna Tanner and Jean Porter.

Funera l serv ices will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2018, a t the Ch urch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 230 North Val Vista D rive, Gil bert, Arizona.

1754 Obituary:
New York Times
By Cade Metz
Feb. 2, 2018

Jon Huntsman Sr., the son of a music teacher in the heart of the Idaho p o tato country who rose to become a billionaire industrialist and philant hr opist in Utah and the father of that state’s governor, died on Frida y a t his home in Salt Lake City. He was 80.

Gary Chapman, a spokesman for the Huntsman Corporation, the specialty ch e mical company where Mr. Huntsman was executive chairman, confirmed th e de ath but declined to give the cause. He had been ill for an extende d perio d of time.

In early 1970s, Mr. Huntsman built a packaging company that created ma n y of the first plastic plates, bowls and fast-food containers, includi n g the plastic “clamshell” that held McDonald’s Big Mac. After selling t h e company, he went on to found the Huntsman Corporation, an $8 billio n mu ltinational operation that produces chemicals used in everything fro m clo thing to automobiles.

He also served in the Nixon administration and in 1988 ran unsuccessful l y for governor in Utah.

But he became known as much for his philanthropy as for his business a n d political ambitions. In 1992, after both of his parents died of canc e r and he, too, battled the disease, he created the Huntsman Cancer Inst it ute at the University of Utah with a $10 million grant, and in the yea r s since, he and his family donated more than $1.4 billion to cancer res ea rch.

“He was a great entrepreneur and a real humanitarian,” said Patrick Byrn e , the chief executive and founder of Overstock.com, the online retaile r b ased in Salt Lake City, and a three-time cancer survivor. “He mad e a to n of money, and he gave it away while he was alive.”

Jon Meade Huntsman was born in 1937 in Blackfoot, Idaho. In an intervi e w with The New York Times in 1994, he remembered hearing stories abou t tw o of his great-great-grandfathers, who crossed the mountains with Br igha m Young on wagon trains in the 1840s and became businessmen in Utah . He w ould eventually make the same trip and join the highest echelons o f the C hurch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but he took a more ci rcuitou s route.

After moving to Palo Alto, Calif., where, in junior high school, he me t h is future wife, Karen Haight, Mr. Huntsman won a scholarship from th e Cro wn Zellerbach paper company that sent him to the University of Penn sylvan ia and the Wharton School. But his future was in egg cartons, no t paper.

He joined an egg distribution company run by his wife’s uncle, and, a s h e once told The Times, he noticed that the cardboard cartons were pro ne t o leaks. So, he helped development a plastic carton. In 1965, the co mpan y was bought by Dow Chemical.

Mr. Huntsman’s ambitions were varied.

He spent time repackaging and selling music recordings on television und e r titles like “Greatest Hits of Rock & Roll.” And in 1970, he joined t h e Nixon administration, eventually serving as special assistant and sta f f secretary to the president. But by then, he had already started the H un tsman Container Corporation, which created the Big Mac clamshell in 19 74.

In 1982, he founded the Huntsman Chemical Corporation in Salt Lake Cit y . Then, after acquiring the worldwide operations of the Texaco Chemica l C ompany, the company evolved into the Huntsman Corporation.

Mr. Huntsman is survived by his wife, Karen, and eight children, 56 gran d children and 19 great-grandchildren. His daughter Kathleen died in 2010 .

His son Jon Huntsman Jr. was Utah’s governor from 2005 to 2009, ran fo r p resident in 2012 with financial backing from the elder Mr. Huntsman , an d is now the United States ambassador to Russia. In 2016, another so n, Pa ul, bought The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah’s largest daily paper, and n amed h is father chairman emeritus.

In an interview in 2014, The Tribune reported on Friday, Mr. Huntsman sa i d that he wanted his family to follow his lead.

“I would hope that our children and grandchildren and great-grandchildr e n would feel equally comfortable in public office or philanthropy,” h e sa id.

Fred Esplin, vice president for advancement at the University of Utah, w h o had known the elder Mr. Huntsman since the 1970s, said that Mr. Hunts ma n left “quite the legacy.”

“It is not the Kennedys,” he said. “But it is a dynasty.”

A version of this article appears in print on Feb. 4, 2018, Section A, P a ge 22 of the New York edition with the headline: Jon Huntsman Sr., 80 , Bi llionaire Philanthropist.

Mom moved to Kearns in January 1954 and lived in the same home for almo s t 60 years.

Mom had a strong testimony of her Savior and was proud of the fact tha t e ach of her children has gone through the Temple and have been Seale d to t heir spouses. She loved going to the Temple and made it a habit o f goin g twice a week for many years, and aside from the last few months , rarel y missed an opportunity to attend the Temple. She combined her lo ve of tr avel and going to the Temple and had done Temple work in 34 diff erent Tem ples.

And Mom did love to travel. She went on a 12-day camping trip to the Pac i fic Northwest six months before she became bedridden. She had travele d t o 49 states and was anxiously waiting for someone to build a train (s he d isliked flying or traveling on water) that went to Hawaii so she cou ld la y claim to having visited all 50 states.

DonaRae had a love of learning and reading. She worked for the Salt La k e County Library System for 32 years and developed many friendships whi l e working there. She also accumulated her own vast personal library, co ns isting mainly of books bought from the library. She also had a fascina tio n with things medical and had a not-so-secret longing to have bee n a surg eon’s assistant.

Mom is survived by, and very much missed by, her children: Bruce (Lynn ) R obinson, Janine (Ellsworth) Moon, Brian (Samantha) Bennett, Shannon ( Bri a n) Lytle; her step-daughter Karen (Ron) Ketterer; sisters Sharon (Q u in n) Spencer and Linda (Ross) Farrer. Two furry children, Nubbin, an d Bill y also survive mom. To count grandchildren and great-grandchildre n woul d be like trying to count the falling grains of sand in a sand clo ck. An d each and every one was her favorite!

She was pre-deceased by 2 daughters; Gayle Ann Winward, and Claudia Mill s , her son in law Gaylon Winward, her sister and brother in law, Marjor i e (Lynn) Howarth, brother in law Richard Mears, step-son Michael Bennet t , both husbands, and her parents. What a joyful reunion is taking place !

Thanks to Nelda and Ruth for their regular visits with Mom. Your devot e d friendship meant a lot to her.

And a special thanks to Summit Hospice, and especially Mary and Andrea , f or the loving care they provided this past year and a half. Mom love d yo u and very much appreciated the special care you gave to her.

The smile on her face when we entered the room, express ed the jo y that she felt in her heart. Her tender embrace and the strok e of her h and describe the wonderful wife and mother of ours.
An eternal sweetheart stretched forth his hand,
With special love, honor and respect, this union began.
An eye single to God opened the way.
Their goal was to fulfill his plan and to obey.
An example of motherhood, with dad at her side,
A team to perfection, just an occasional bumpy ride.
Her homemaking skills were put into action.
The team was growing, no longer just a small fraction.
She as the team captain, the training began.
Cooking, sewing, and curling were all a part of the plan.
Her handsome referee stood at her side.
Cheering the loudest, the joy he felt he couldn't hide.
A natural beauty graced her face,
Matched by a selfless heart so full of grace.
Concern for her family, a constant care.
A yearning prayer, wishing that she could just be there.
Eternity so beautiful, lend to her exemplary life.
