    JENNET SNEDEN DUNCAN
    (husband, James Duncan)
WRITTEN BY HER DAUGHTER ELIZABETH E. STEWART
    MAY 23, 1942

Life of my mother, Jennet Sneden Duncan who was the daughter of David S n eden and Christeena Lyle. She was born in Gargel, Scotland, April 21, 1 83 0. She attended school in Scotland and had a very good education for t ha t time.
Her father was a coal miner and provided all their groceries in large q u antities. Mother was the wife of James Duncan and was the proud and hap p y mother of nine children; three girls and six boys. Mary Jennet, Jame s , David, John, Christeena, Elizabeth Emma, Adam, George, and Richard. A da m and George died in infancy. James, David, Christeena, and Richard al l l ived to man and womanhood but have passed beyond now .
Mother came to America in the dame ship with James Duncan who afterwar d s became my father. It was on the ship that she first met him. She le f t a sweetheart behind in Scotland but he never came to America.
When mother arrived in Pennsylvania she started to work for a lady by t h e name of Walker. It was here that mother and father’s courtship starte d . Mrs. Walker was good and kind to mother. She taught her how to cook a n d do general housework. Father would come real often to visit with moth er . Mrs. Walker was also very kind to him and told mother whenever he ca me , to find anything to eat that he wished to.
While mother was living with Mrs. Walker she learned to be a very excel l ent cook. She was still living here when she and father were married i n 1 851. They came to Utah in 1852 and first settled in a small town by t he n ame of Session.
Father worked here for a man named Anson Call. When the Legislature m e t in Fillmore, Anson Call had to come down and he brought father and mo th er with him. Father went back with him. Mother stayed in Fillmore unti l s he grew tired of staying alone and she started out to walk back to wh er e father was, carrying with her, a small bundle of clothes on her back .
It was now the later part of November and winter was setting in. When s h e got just north of Provo, it started to snow and was very cold. As sh e t rugged along through the cold, wet snow her clothes froze to her bod y . A man and woman came along in a covered wagon and she asked them to l e t her ride but the man said no and as the wagon passed her she grabbe d ho ld of a rod that was standing out on the back of the wagon. She hun g on t o this rod until she was worn out and almost frozen to death. Sh e droppe d in he snow and the woman saw here fall.
She coaxed her husband to help mother into the wagon. She was very go o d and kind to mother and helped her put dry clothes on. She had to pul l m other’s shoes and stockings off for her as they were frozen to her le gs a nd feet.
They left her near the point of the mountain with a family who had lo s t their mother. Their children were trying to prepare Thanksgiving dinn e r so mother stayed there a few days and helped them all she could. As s oo n as she felt stronger, she went on to father. They both worked for An so n Call and he gave father a yoke of oxen for his work and mother a co w fo r her work.
In 1853 father and mother went back to Fillmore. While they were livi n g here father worked in a flourmill for a man name Bartholomew. Mary a n d James were born in Fillmore. In 1857 they moved to Meadow and locat e d on what is known as the ridge, about one and one half miles west of t h e present location of Meadow. They lived under the ridge in a one-roo m lo g house. The dirt blew in the house so bad here mother just couldn’ t stan d it. So one day when father was out in the field working, mothe r pulle d the floor of the house up and carried it on top of the ridge an d leane d it against a fence. They lived in this place with the floorboar ds a she lter until father had time to bring the logs on top of the ridg e and buil d another. David was born while living here.
The water was very muddy and bad down here, as it ran through all the f i elds, so father decided to move to town. The rest of the family was al l b orn in Meadow. When they moved up to town they built a two-room adob e hou se on the north side of the lot where Daniel Duchnell now lives. La ter th ey moved up to the lot where Isaac now lives and made more adobe s and bui lt another house.
Father made a bed, table and stools for chairs. Mother cooked in a skil l et on the fireplace for a good many years. She had plain white curtain s t o her windows, which were made out of some of her clothes. When mothe r fi rst came to Utah she had lovely clothes and lots of nice quilts an d line n sheets. She cut her white petticoats up to make her baby clothe s and sh e also cut many of her other things up to make her older childre n’s cloth es. She made fathers best shirts out of her linen sheets .
By this time father had accumulated a few sheep and they would sent t h e wool from these sheep with a little grease to Provo and have it mad e in to rolls and many times they couldn’t afford to have the rolls mad e and m other would make them and she also has a spinning wheel and woul d then sp in these rolls of wool into thread.
Abram Greenhalgh was a weaver and mother would hire him to weave her th r ead into cloth. He would take much of the thread for the weaving. Moth e r was a lovely seamstress and she made all her boys suits, shirts, an d un derwear and us girls’ dresses and other clothes by hand as she didn’ t hav e a sewing machine. She did all her own knitting and knitted and di d lot s of fine lovely sewing for other people.
When she was working for Anson Call she made his son a best white shi r t and worked it down the front. He prized this shirt very highly. She b ra ided hats for us children out of wheat straw. She pounded corn stalk s t o get the juice and she also scrapped watermelon rinds for juice an d the n she would boil it down to make a little sweet for us children. W e all h ad lots of canker because we didn’t get enough sweet. Mother kep t her hou se spotlessly clean. Sister Fisher told her many times she coul d eat of f her hearth stone, she always kept it so clean.
She always washed and ironed beautifully her Sunday clothes, whether th e y needed it or not, to have them spotless clean for the next Sunday. S h e kept her few dishes on a board shelf covered with paper she had scall op ed and tried to make it look like a cupboard.
Mother was a very faithful woman and many times she would walk long dis t ances to attend to her religious duties. She was a Sunday School teach e r and was also one of the first visiting teachers in the Relief Societ y . She and Sister Gull went all around town and gathered pieces, which t h e Relief Society sisters made into quilts. Mother and Alice Stott boug h t these two first quilts they made and gave nine dollars apiece for the m.
One time father, mother, and the children made a trip to Salt Lake Ci t y in the covered wagon. Mother drove the team all the way and father wa lk ed driving a nice fat steer he sold in Salt Lake. Mother said she coul d t ie in a red handkerchief all the things she got with the money from t he s teer. When my sister Christeena died she left a baby boy ten moths o ld an d also another little boy 5 years old.
Mother cared for these boys until they were twelve and seventeen year s o f age and then their father took them. Mother worked very hard all he r li fe, both in the home and in the garden and fields.
She was always good and kind to her family and did all she could to ma k e them happy. The neighbors’ children loved to come to our house becau s e mother was kind to them and fed them when they were hungry. Many of t h e grown ups now can remember the nice warm scones she gave them when th e y were children.
Her whole married life was a very hard one but she remained faithful a n d was loved by all who knew her. She died at the ripe old age of eighty -f our.
My mother, Jennet Sneden Duncan, was born April 21, 1830 in Gargel, Sco t land to a coal miner, David Sneden and his wife Christeena Lyle.
Mother met my father, James Duncan, on the boat in which they came to A m erica. They lived first in Pennsylvania where she worked for a Mrs. Wal ke r and where mother learned to become an excellent cook. Father courte d he r here and it was here she was living when they were married in 1851 .
In 1852 they came to Utah and settled in the small town of Session, n o w Bountiful. Mother and Father both worked for Anson Call, who paid th e m with a yoke of oxen and a cow. When the Legislature met, Anson Call h a d to go to Fillmore and he took mother and father with him. Father retu rn ed to Session but Mother stayed in Fillmore. She grew tired of stayin g al one and began to walk to Session carrying a small bundle of clothe s on he r back.
It was November and winter was setting in. when she got just north of P r ovo it started to snow and was very cold. As she trudged along throug h th e cold wet snow her clothes froze to her body. A covered wagon cam e by an d she asked for a ride, but the man refused. She grabbed hold o f a rod o n the back of the wagon and hung on until she was worn out an d almost fro zen to death. As she dropped into the snow, the woman on th e wagon saw he r fall. She coaxed her husband to assist Mother into the w agon where sh e helped Mother put on dry clothes. She had to pull Mother’ s shoes and st ockings off as they were frozen to her feet. They left he r near the poin t of the mountain with a motherless family where she stay ed a few days un til she felt stronger—helping them prepare Thanksgivin g dinner. Then sh e went on to Father.
In 1853 Mother and Father moved to Fillmore where Father worked in th e f lourmill for Mr. Bartholomew. Mary Jennet and James were born in Fill more . They moved to Meadow in 1857 and lived under a ridge in a one-roo m lo g house west of town. The dirt blew in this house so badly Mother co uldn’ t stand it. One day she tore up the floorboards of the house and ca rrie d them to the top of the ridge and leaned them against the fence fo r a sh elter. They lived like this until Father had time to build anothe r shelte r. David was born here. The water was muddy and bad so Father de cided t o move into town.
In Meadow they built a two-room adobe house and later a larger house. T h e rest of the children were born in Meadow: John, Christeena, Elizabet h E mma, Adam, George and Richard. Adam and George died as infants.
Father made furniture and Mother cooked in a skillet on the fireplace f o r many years. When she came to Utah she had lovely clothes and many qui lt s and linen sheets. She cut up her white petticoats to make baby cloth e s and used her other things to make older children’s clothes. She mad e Fa ther’s best shirts out of her linen sheets.
Father had accumulated a few sheep. Mother spun wool into thread and h a d Adam Greenhalgh weave her thread into cloth. She was a marvelous seam st ress and knitter and made clothes both for her own family and for othe r p eople.
Mother pounded corn stalks and scraped watermelon rinds for juice, whi c h she boiled down to make sweets. We all had lots of canker from lac k o f sweets. She worked hard all her married life in home, garden and fi eld . She kept her house and clothes spotlessly clean. When my sister Chr iste ena died Mother took care of her two small boys for 12 years.
She was a faithful woman and would walk long distances to attend to h e r religious duties. She was a Sunday School teacher and one of the fir s t visiting teachers in Relief Society. She and Sister Gull gathered pie ce s for quilts made by the Relief Society sisters. Mother and Alice Stot t b ought the first two quilts they made for nine dollars a piece.

    JAMES DUNCAN

James Duncan, son of James Duncan and Mary McLaughlin, was born in Gre e n End, Scotland, February 5, 1828. While a young man in Scotland he hea r d the Mormon Missionaries preach, and was converted to the Mormon Churc h . He decided to come to America and join the Saints.
When he was twenty-two years old he sailed for America. On the dame sh i p was a Scottish girl by the name of Janette Sneddon, just two years yo un ger than James. When they got to Pennsylvania they both stopped to ear n m oney to continue to Utah. Janette worked for a Mrs. Walker who was ve ry k ind to her and taught her many things about house keeping. Mrs. Walk er wa s also very hospitable to James when he came to court Janette. Sh e told J anette to give him food and treat him well. Janette was still wi th Mrs. W alker when she and James were married in 1851.
They crossed the plains and settled in Sessions, (Bountiful) where th e y both worked for Anson Call. When Anson called by Brigham Young to set tl e Fillmore, Anson took James and Janette with him to Fillmore. They fi rs t settled in Fillmore where their first two children were born, Mary J ane tte, born April 15, 1854, and James, born February 26, 1857. James wa s pa sturing a herd of cows on the tall grass about seven miles south o f Fillm ore. The soil was not rocky as it was in Fillmore, and there wa s a smal l mountain stream. He went home and talked it over with his wife , and sh e consented to move to the south. They lived in a cave on the si de of a h ill, and after four months several other families joined them . Here Davi d was born February 4, 1859.
About a year and a half later James Duncan supervised the moving of t h e town of Meadow farther east as the water could then be taken from th e c reek. James was superintendent of the Sunday School, Bishop’s counsel or t o Bishop Hyrum Bell Bennett, and worked in other positions in the ch urch . More children came to bless their home: John born January 7, 1861 ; Chri stina born March 24, 1863; Elizabeth Emma born February 8, 1866; A dam bor n February 3, 1868; Richard born, February 8, 1869; George born A ugust 27 , 1871. James was a professional adobe maker and soon made adobe s and bui lt the first house in Meadow, he also made adobes for the othe r houses an d some of those houses still stand. He was very industrious , strictly hon est and fair in all his dealings, a fine example for all o f the citizens , he passed away, January 4, 1911, at the age of 83 and i s buried besid e his wife in the Meadow Cemetery .
James Duncan was one of the first of four men called to colonize Meado w . The early years there were difficult but not without humor. These ear l y settlers had accumulated some cattle and a few sheep, chickens and pi g s that roamed freely throughout their fields. Because of the tremendou s a mount of work that went into providing food and shelter for the famil ies , corrals and pens had to wait. Companies of settlers on their way t o Cal ifornia found it handy to just help themselves to the animals the y wanted , but the settlers found this increasingly hard to cope with.
One late afternoon when two or three of these company men stopped at gr a ndfather’s place, they saw a nice fat bull and decided to take it alon g w ith them. Grandmother protested but they paid no attention to her. So on a fter they left, grandfather came home from the field where he had be en wo rking and found grandmother in tears and very upset. He decided tha t wa s enough--he was not going to allow people to take his animals any l onge r without at least putting up a fight. He was going to get that bul l back . Though he didn’t have a gun, he did have a good bullwhip, calle d a “qui rt or Black Snake”, hanging on the wall and he knew how to thro w and po p it with authority. Grandmother was afraid of him and tried t o talk hi m out of going after them, but grandfather, a stubborn Scotsman , took dow n the bullwhip and set out at a fast pace. Overtaking the men , he announc ed that he had come for the bull and when they started to ob ject, put o n a little exhibition—popping and swinging the whip with impr essive skill . “Do I get the bull or do you feel the sting of my whip?” h e demanded. J ust what happened after that grandfather never did say, bu t he returned w ith the bull. It has been said that there were some who c ould pick a fl y off a horse with those whips and never touch the horse—t hese men may ha ve thought he was one of this group.
During the time that grandfather and grandmother James Duncan were livi n g in the old fort at Fillmore, Indians often camped where Meadow is no w . Chief Walker, their leader, was known to be a very cruel Indian and m os t of the whites were afraid of him. At that time the area was a vast m ead ow of tall grass so the pioneers ran their cattle there in the summe r an d cut the grass for winter-feed. The men would return to Fillmore ev ery n ight, however, as they were afraid the Indians might make trouble.
One day the cattle thundered into the fort, many shot with Indian arrow s . Grandfather, volunteered to go see what had caused the trouble. At th a t time. Chief Walker’s band was camped on the northeast corner of the t ow n where the creek ran from the mountains through he meadows, so grandf ath er started out on foot along the foothills where the cedars grew thic k. H e met a Mr. King who was looking for his cattle and the two proceede d t o the Indian camp. There they found the Indians dancing around in cir cles , moaning and performing the death rituals. Chief Walker was dead. O ne In dian left the dance, ran a few steps and shot a pony, and then anot her di d the same, and another. These animals were for Chief Walker to fi de [tak e] into the happy hunting grounds.
Later when the dancing stopped, they tied the Chief to a horse, form e d a line and wound their way up the canyon. There they prepared a grav e a nd furnished it with supplies, dishes, weapons and all the material s nece ssary for Chief Walker to live happily in the hereafter. Grandfath er wa s appalled when they also buried alive with him one of his own papo oses . He worked his head up through the pickets that were placed over th e gra ve and cried pitifully.
The Indians gave strict orders to everyone not to go into the canyon—th e ir Chief’s happy hunting grounds. The pioneers were not even allowed t o m ake a road into the canyon.
This experience took place between 1854 and 1857.

Was president of the Relief Society eight years. Was president of t h e P r imary. Was a nurse and midwife forty-five years. Brought hundre d s o f ba bies into this world and nursed many. Worked hard, we had a fa mi l y of tw enty-one for years. We used to do most of our clothes for ou r f i rst chil dren. Did all the washing and ironing, all the bread and b utte r, in fac t everything we ate.

Elizabeth with some of her girlfriends would get up at daylight in t h e m o rning and go to the fields and glean grain along the ditch bank s an d i n o ther places where the grain was left. FLORA "B" DUNCAN LABRUM (1891 – 1964) LIFE SKETC H

Flora was born on 6 April 1890, in Meadow, Millard County, Utah. She w a s the fifth child of James and Anna Judith Beckstrand Duncan .

Her grandfather, James Duncan, was one of the first settlers in Meadow . F lora attended elementary school in Meadow .

She married Percy Lee Labrum on 8 November 1912, in the Salt Lake Templ e .

They were the parents of two sons: Theron Lee, born 9 December 1914, i n S alt Lake City, and Dean James, born 12 November v 1928, in Nampa, Ida ho . Dean died on 17 February 2003, in St. George, Washington County, Uta h .

Flora's son, Theron, records the following memories: "Mother was very st r ict and took pride in her home. This I particularly recall as she ha d m e come in and dust all the baseboards, mop the floor and wash the dis hes . We always had a lot of company and great Sunday dinners. At these g athe rings, we had to wear shirt, tie and coat. ”

“Her favorite time of year was Christmas. Far in advance she enjoyed pre p aring gifts for the family, friends and neighbors. Always on Christma s Ev e we would deliver these gifts. One Christmas Eve with the car loade d wit h gifts, we attended a gathering at the Nampa 2nd Ward. We intende d to ma ke our deliveries after the church service. When we went out to t he car , it had been broken into and all the gifts had been taken. Mothe r was s o upset because there was no time to replace the stolen article s .

“Mother permitted no beer or alcoholic beverages in our home. Grandma us e d to come and stay for a few weeks and those who knew her will recall t h e problem she had with her stomach. It was either her doctor or a frie n d who quoted to her from 1 Timothy chapter 5, verse 23, 'Drink no long e r water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often i nf irmities.' So when Grandma came to visit, there was placed a crock o f rai sins to ferment by the kitchen stove. On one occasion my father , a bishop , had his counselors in for the bishop's meeting and during th e meeting o ne of them asked father about the delicious smell coming fro m the kitchen . As I recall, the response had something to do with baking . "

Flora died on 3 September 1964, at Pocatello, Bannock County, Idaho .

Life Story of Isaac Stewart (Ike)

Isaac Stewart was born 25 September 1892 in Meadow, Millard County, Uta h . His parents were James Murdoch Stewart and Elizabeth Emma Duncan . H e had six sisters and two brothers and seven half brothers and two h alf s isters. His father, James Murdoch Stewart, was a polygamist and hi s tw o wives, Mary Jennette and Elizabeth Emma were sisters. Elizabeth Em ma wa s the youngest and his second wife. Isaac was his father's tenth c hild a nd his mother's fourth child. He had dark curly hair and blue eye s and w as always large for his age. He was rocked in an old bumpy cradl e unti l an uncle came in one day and saw the old homemade cradle. He bo ugh t a new cradle for him which was very nice, Isaac's own babies were a ll r ocked in this cradle.

Isaac was an ambitious boy; he was always helping others and never think i ng of himself. He had many friends and was very close to his half-brot he r Ephraim, who was only two weeks older than Isaac. One of their bes t fr iends was Ezra Gull who lived across the street. The three boys wen t t o school together and spent many hours with each other .

Isaac went to school through eighth grade in a two story rock schoolhou s e just west of the church. Later it was torn down and a new modern sch oo l was built. A large class graduated from the Eighth Grade. One clas s wa s held back a year and one promoted up. There were sixteen in the g radua ting class. The graduation exercises were on 9th June 1911 in Oa k City . Eighth Grade Graduation was a County affair which was held in d ifferen t towns throughout the county. Oak City was so far from Meadow t hey trav eled by horse and buggy and got to stay all night in different h omes in O ak City. This was very exciting and a special occasion for the m. (It i s about 40 miles from Meadow to Oak City.) Isaac, Ephraim, Cli fford an d Zina were all in the same graduating class. The next winter th ey went t o Hinckley and attended high school at the Hinckley Academy whi ch was th e only high school in the county. Isaac only went one winter a nd after t hat his time was spent helping his father on the farm and doin g chores, m ilking cows, feeding cattle, etc.

There were always lots of dances and parties in the town of Meadow. Isa a c was a fun loving person and always went to all the social activitie s . He loved to dance and was a good dancer. He did not marry young an d j oined each age group as they came along. He was one of the first you ng m en in town to have a car -- it was a Model-T Ford. He always ha d a loa d of girls taking them some place. He was so good natured he wou ld tak e them to Kanosh to a dance and go home alone. Seemed he didn't m ind i f they all found a boyfriend to take them home. He loved to see ev eryon e have a good time.

Ike started going out with Rose when she was living in Fillmore goin g t o high school He was older but was so kind and good she wanted to b e wit h him. He went to Fillmore to pick her up and took her to Meadow t o th e dances and parties. On Christmas 1926 he gave her a wristwatch fo r Chr istmas as an engagement gift. Few girls owned a watch so it wa s a wonder ful gift.

In February his younger brother, Golden, was called on a mission and h i s Mother was going to Salt Lake for two weeks to work in the Temple an d t o be with Golden while he was in the Mission Home. Isaac and Rose de cide d to get married while she was gone. When they told her, she said , "If y ou are going to be married you come to Salt Lake and be married r ight. Y ou can go through the temple with your brother". Isaac and Ros e were mar ried in the Salt Lake Temple on 1 March 1927. The newlyweds l ived with h is Mother. His other brothers and sisters were married an d Golden was a way on his mission.

Isaac had a lot he purchased from his Uncle Richard Duncan located on Ma i n Street right in the heart of town. (This lot was the one his Grandfa th er, James Duncan, one of the first settlers in Meadow, built his firs t a dobe home on.) Ike and Rose started at once to build their dream hom e . It was a lovely home of Cement Brick with a big front porch and a fu l l basement with a furnace and all the conveniences which wasn't had i n mo st homes at that time. It took nearly two years to finish and the y move d into it the fall of 1928.

Isaac owned forty acres of dry grain land and twenty acres of seed grou n d and was running his Father's farm. He owned a few range cattle and h a d a permit to graze them in the mountains in the summer. He mortgage d hi s farm to build the new house and it took most of what he made to pa y th e mortgage payment. They didn't have money to buy furniture so onl y ha d the bare necessities but were very happy. Their first daughter, G loria , was born 7 January 1929. "We were really blessed and the happies t peop le on earth".

The government changed the Cattle Permits on the forest range to sheep p e rmits, so everyone grazing cattle had to sell their cattle and buy shee p . They didn't know anything about sheep so took a big loss.

Another baby girl, Elaine, was born 11 March 1934. That winter Ike go t s ick. The first doctor treated him for pneumonia but he didn't get an y be tter so he went to another doctor and found he had kidney complicati ons . The doctor treated him for his kidneys and he soon got well enoug h t o get up. As soon as he was well enough the doctor sent him to Sal t Lak e for further treatment. It was a year before he gained strength e noug h to do anything. He had to go to Salt Lake for treatments througho ut th e year because the doctor in Fillmore didn't have the equipment t o give t hem to him.

A baby boy, Voy Dean, was born 10 May 1936 and he was happy to have a so n . Isaac got well enough to work again, but through his long sick spel l h e hadn't been able to make the payments on the mortgage. The bank fo recl osed and took the farm. We lost everything but our home. These wer e dep ression years and there was no work. Rose's brother in law, Alto n Donnel ley, was a superintendent in a coal mine in Kemmerer, Wyoming an d offere d Isaac a job in the mine. Ike didn't like the idea of workin g in a coa l mine but we needed to live so we moved to Kemmerer in the fa ll of 1936.

He made good money in the coal mine and after a year and a half we wer e n early out of debt. His health still wasn't good when a Smallpox epide mi c hit the area and he got smallpox and was really sick. He was able t o g o back to work after the smallpox but his kidney trouble started agai n . Ike went into the hospital in Kemmerer but after three weeks he sti l l wasn't well enough to go back to work. He left his family in Kemmer e r and went back to Meadow to stay with his Mother and rest up. Afte r a w eek or two art home he got sick again and was rushed to Salt Lak e to th e L.D.S. Hospital.

Rose left the children with her sister, Ruby, and took a bus to Salt Lak e . Isaac was critically ill and wanted to see his children so Rose wen t b ack to Kemmerer to get the children and pack up her things to move ba ck t o Meadow. Her brother, Keith, borrowed a truck from Isaac's brothe r in l aw, Cleon Stott. They loaded all of their belongings in the truc k and to ok off for Meadow with a stop in Salt Lake. When she took the c hildren t o the hospital to see their Daddy, he was so sick he didn't eve n seem t o know they were there. Keith took the truck with the childre n on to Mea dow where Rose's mother took care of them and she stayed wit h her husban d in Salt Lake.

Isaac Stewart died in L.D.S. Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah 27 May 19 3 8 of Kidney failure. He was a wonderful Son, Husband, and Father, lov e d by all that knew him. He is buried in the Meadow Cemetery .

    GROWING UP IN MEADOW
The following account of their family life as Isaac was growing up was w r itten by his sister, Zina, who was three years younger than him :

"We were a large family, 18 children. Father married two sisters, Mar y a nd Elizabeth Duncan. Each wife had nine children and we all lived to geth er as one big happy family. I don't remember Nephi and Minnie, th e two o ldest in the family living at home, the first child James died wh ile a ba by. Strangers that visited the home would say they didn't kno w which chi ld belonged to which mother. We all had our certain chores o r jobs to d o and we did them without being told. Our home was a large tw o story Re d Brick. It has a kitchen, pantry, dining room, and two bedro oms downsta irs separated by a hall. These were Mary and Elizabeth's roo ms, (Aunt M y and Aunt Bee) as they were called. There were two beds i n each room . A staircase that went upstairs where there were five nic e sized bedroo ms with two beds in some rooms and a large closet. Ther e was a Home Comf ort range in the kitchen, a large round heater, could s ay Pot Bellied Hea ter, that heated most the house. A smaller heater i n one bedroom with th e stove pipe going up and through one of the room s that made the upstair s very comfortable.

I can remember when there were 15 of us at home. Duncan, Em, Neil, Tee n , George, Ruth, Ephraim, Isaac, Clifford, Zina, Angus, Violet. Grace, B la nch, and Golden. Dad was a good provider; he did a lot of freighting , se lling produce, garden stuff, fruit, etc. He always bought rice, sug ar, r olled oats in 100 lb. bags. Our flour came from a mill in Fillmore . The y would take a load of wheat, have it ground into flour then we ha d a lar ge bin in the pantry that they would dump it in. They raised the ir own p ork and cured it. We always had good ham and bacon all summer a nd winter . They would put it in sacks and bury it in the wheat bins i n the summer . They really knew how to cure pork. The Beef would hang o utside in a t ree. In the winter they always killed a beef, in the col d weather, it wo uld keep for some time.

We had really cold winters, the frost on the windows each morning were b e autiful scenes. For winter our clothing for girls would consist of , a ch emise, warm bloomers, two petticoats, one always was flannel, lon g stocki ngs and dress. The boys always had long handled underclothes a nd othe r items, sweater, coat, muffler, woolen mittens, heavy shoes an d boots . We didn't get dressed in a hurry.

The stoves were kept burning with wood. Bath night usually Saturday nig h t for 15 children was a busy time. The water was heated on the top o f th e stove and in a reservoir and portioned out in a number 3 tub in th e kit chen where it could be more private. The rest of the time we had t o spon ge behind the ears, neck and other places as we managed to keep cl ean. W e usually had two outfits of clothes. Wear one a week then chang e to th e second set while they were washed .

At Christmas time a closet under the stairs would be full of lots of goo d ies. Candy in those days come in 5 gal. Wooden buckets and I can remem be r six or eight buckets of different kinds stored for Xmas .

We had big gardens and orchards about a quarter of a mile north of our h o me north of where Neil Stewart’s home now stands.. We always had a lar g e melon patch that we could go with a wagon and load it up. Father own e d the land from Neil's corner out the road to the canyon. So he donate d , opened up the road which also made building spots for some of the boy s . The boys would string out to do their chores with father. The yar d wa s across the street from our house on the South West Corner. Some w oul d take care of the milking or dairy, hand milking, others the feeding . I t seemed like Aunt My's Boys did the milking and Isaac, George, an d Nei l the feeding of the stock. The girls all had their jobs. The old er one s would take a younger one and they would make all the beds. Th e older g irls would comb the younger ones hair. Some would set the tabl e, no smal l job, and then place all the chair backs to the table for Mor ning Prayer . Everyone was there with their morning chores done and read y for breakf ast at once.

It seemed to me things went pretty smooth for such a crowd. I remembe r w hen Tena, George, Ephraim, Ruth, Isaac, Clifford, Zina, Violet and An gu s come home at noon for lunch. Our kitchen table was full. We woul d se t our lunch on, there was usually enough meat left over from breakfa st . Fruits and jam, butter, bread, milk and always honey, as we had bee s . We would always wash our dishes before going back to school. The ol de r ones, grown ups, had dinner later in the day and usually the table w oul d still be there ready for us to clear up when we came home from scho ol ; especially on Wash Days when they would wash till dark. There wer e alw ays babies for me to tend, my sisters, Grace and Blanche, and broth er, Go lden.

Grandpa Duncan lived with us for years. He and Father did most of the p r aying and I was always glad when it wasn't Grandpa's turn, he prayed s o l ong we would nearly starve. I was quite grown up before they starte d t o call on the Mothers and Children to pray. Grandpa Duncan lived i n a on e room house, not far from our home on the same lot. As we girl s grew u p we all had turn making his bed and keeping his room clean. H e had a wo oden chest and he always gave us a few pieces of hard tack can dy. He cho pped a lot of wood; it took a lot in the winter to keep sever al stoves go ing. We would all carry it in and fill wood boxes full, bes ides the boxe s on the porch.

A block east of our place the creek bed crossed the street and come do w n next to our home. In the winter the stream would freeze, then thaw a n d flood over and we sure had a skating rink, clear down almost to the h ig hway. It seemed lots colder in those days, the ice was thick.

There were four Duncan's and Aunt Olive who all lived a half of block ea s t of us and the Gulls lived across the street. So with our bunch ther e w as always plenty to play games and skate. In the summer we would car ry a rmfuls of straw from the straw stacks, make a big circle in the stre et be tween us and the Gulls and all upper town kids would meet with us a nd w e would play Red Man's Bluff and Kick the Can. We had lots of chore s, wo rked hard and played hard.

As far back as I can remember, Mother took over the general managemen t o f the home. It seems she did all the bread making, sixteen large loa ve s at a time, every other day, and oftener. I can still taste the goo d co okies and ginger snaps she baked. I don't see how she ever got th e big b read pan full, with so many samplers while they were hot. I neve r hear d her deny anyone anything they had to eat. She worked in the pub lic a l ot, was Relief Society President for years, also Primary Presiden t. Aun t My would sooner work outside and take care of the Chickens, etc .

Dad had a dry farm south and west of Dry Creek Ranch. There was a log c a bin on it. The farm was planted to alfalfa. In the summer when the h a y was ready to harvest, two of us girls would go down with the men t o d o the cooking. It was during the spring runoff of the water from th e mou ntains. Dad would take his water turn down there and flood over hi s farm . In those days there were lots of squirrels. As the water woul d floo d over the fields it would fill the squirrel holes and out would c ome th e squirrels. We would go down to help kill them and all of the In dians , who lived near the ranch would come to get the fat squirrels to e at. T hey would sit by a hole and when they poked their head out they wo uld gra b them around the neck, and slam them hard on the ground to kil l them. W e had to get rid of them or they would take all the crops. Th is farm wa s where our Seed Crops come from.

I remember churning, first with an old dash churn and later a big barr e l churn. Mother would get it ready and I have churned many a batch o f cr eam into butter. She always called me in to have a fresh glass o f butte rmilk. I loved it, specially when it had hunks of butter in it . I stil l like it. We used to have lots of Jonney Cake for supper an d Green Onio ns, Preserves and Milk. (Jonny cake was a dry flat bread ma de with cor n meal, salt and water, and cooked on a griddle, in a cast ir on pan, or i n the oven). On Sunday there was always a good dinner waiti ng for us a t home. I learned to make cake early. Sunday morning Mothe r would ski m a pan of milk, get a cup of rich cream, one cup sugar, tw o eggs, bakin g powder, salt, flour and have one of us stir it up and th e cake was read y for dinner with real whipped cream on top. (Milk was pu t in a large pa n overnight and the cream formed a layer on the top).

It was a big night when the Ward Teachers came. Father would call us a l l in, quite a circle of us. We would all kneel in prayer. After pray e r the teachers would start with father and each in his turn would be ca te chized. (to teach using question and answer method). The questions th e y asked us children would be Are you a good girl/boy? Do you mind you r p arents? Do you say your Prayers? Do you attend church and do your d utie s? Do you swear, etc.? It really put us on the spot .

Whenever our father would ask one of us to do something all of us wou l d almost instantly be on our feet ready to do his bidding. He was a lw ays so considerate and kind it was a pleasure to do things for him. I f a ny salesman
come to town selling new things for the home, that made home life easie r , he was the first to buy. We had Coal Oil lights, Hanging lights, Car bi de lights that lit up like the gas lanterns now, and many other things .

The smaller girls had to have all of the Sunday Shoes shined and all cle a ned for Sunday. We nearly always had a everyday pair and a Sunday pai r . Saturday night the long hall would have shoes the length of it read y f or the owners on Sunday morning. On everyday when our shoes needed p olis h we would take a lid off the back of the stove, wet a shoe brush, d ip i t on the back of the lid in the black soot and shine our shoes. Th e shin e didn't last long if our shoes got wet.

We had a big herd of Geese. Aunt My used to pluck their feathers off a n d we all had feather beds and pillows. We children would herd the gee s e in a pen and catch them and Aunt My would hold them on her lap and pl uc k them. They would look so funny with their dresses off .

Charles Gull ran the Creamery just across the street. The boys would be a t Aunt My to gathering the eggs and find all the new nests and we woul d t ake the eggs over to the creamery and exchange them for candy. Cha s ha d groceries and the best candy you ever ate. We would all join in o ut o n the grass and really feast. We were good sized kids before we go t a ni ckel to spend on Sunday.” (In the town of Meadow children were giv en a ni ckel to spend on Sunday so they could go to the little store an d buy cand y. (This tradition was still going on when Gloria was a child )

Sadly, my father's (DeLyle Beckstrand) memories of his mother are very f e w. He told me that on the day his mother died (he was just 5 years old ) h e remembered his dog howling. People were running in and out of th e hous e and he was told to stay outside so he sat on the front porch ste ps. H e knew something very bad had happened.

Another memory from my father occurred after his mother had died. Whe n h e was a young boy riding his horse out on the desert herding cattle , he w as hot, tired, and had his leg thrown over the saddle horn while l oosel y holding the reins. Suddenly he heard his mother's voice just a s clea r as if she was right next to him. She said, "DeLyle! Sit in tha t saddl e and hold on!" He immediately obeyed and didn't even have tim e to wonde r about hearing his mother's voice when suddenly a very larg e rattlesnak e started buzzing right in front of the horse. The horse re ared back an d took off bucking in fright. DeLyle was holding on tight an d managed t o stay on the horse, rather than being thrown off on top of t hat snake . Being bitten by a rattlesnake, without a horse to get back t o town, wo uld have been a death sentence for the young boy. His mother w as watchin g over him then and he felt she always did throughout his life .
