Notes:

Smith was a close advisor and confidant to his brother Joseph as the lat t er produced the Book of Mormon and established the Church of Christ. I n J une 1829, Smith was baptized in Seneca Lake, New York. He was one o f th e Eight Witnesses who swore to the reality of a set of golden plate s insc ribed with the Book of Mormon. He also said he saw the angel Moron i. Whe n the Church of Christ was organized on April 6, 1830, six men sig ned the ir names as charter members; at the age of 30, Hyrum Smith was th e oldes t of the six. Smith served as presiding officer of a church branc h in Col esville, New York, and was one of the first Latter Day Saint mis sionarie s in the surrounding area.

As the church headquarters and membership moved west, Smith and his fami l y relocated. In 1831, he established a home in Kirtland, Ohio. During h i s residence there, he served as foreman of the quarry providing stone f o r the Kirtland Temple. Between 1831 and 1833, he served proselyting mis si ons to Missouri and Ohio. In 1834, under the direction of Joseph Smith , h e recruited members for a militia, Zion's Camp, and traveled with th e gro up to the aid of the Latter Day Saints in Missouri. He was appointe d Seco nd Counselor in the church's First Presidency in November 1837. I n 1838 a nd 1839, Hyrum, Joseph and three other church leaders shared a j ail cel l in Liberty, Missouri while awaiting trial.

After relocating to Nauvoo, Illinois, Smith became the church's Presidi n g Patriarch, a position first held by his father, Joseph Smith Sr. He a ls o replaced Oliver Cowdery as Assistant President of the Church; in thi s c apacity, Smith acted as President of the Church in Joseph's absence a nd w as designated to be Joseph's successor if he were killed or incapaci tated . Although Hyrum Smith was never explicitly ordained to the priesth ood of fice of apostle, "his appointment as assistant president may hav e include d such authority".

When warned of possible danger, Joseph urged Smith and his family to fl e e to Cincinnati, Ohio. Smith refused and, in 1844, traveled with Josep h t o Carthage, Illinois, where both were charged with riot and treason . Jose ph, Hyrum, John Taylor and Willard Richards were held awaiting tri al i n a jail in Carthage. On June 27, 1844, the building was attacked b y a mo b of between sixty and two hundred men. While attempting to barric ade th e door to prevent the mob from entering, Smith was shot in the fac e on th e left side of the nose. After staggering back, another ball fire d throug h the window struck him in the back, passed through his body, an d struc k his watch in his vest pocket. As Smith fell to the floor, he ex claimed , "I am a dead man," as he died. Taylor was struck by several bul lets bu t survived with the help of Richards. Joseph was hit by at leas t two shot s, exclaimed "O Lord, My God," and fell through a second-stor y window t o the ground where he was shot again.

Because of his position as Assistant President of the Church, it is like l y that Smith would have succeeded Joseph and become the next presiden t o f the church had he outlived his brother.

He was an American religious leader and founder of Mormonism and the Lat t er Day Saint movement. When he was 24, Smith published the Book of Morm on . By the time of his death, 14 years later, he had attracted tens of t hou sands of followers and founded a religion that continues to the prese nt w ith millions of global adherents.

Smith was born in Sharon, Vermont. By 1817, he had moved with his fami l y to Western New York, the site of intense religious revivalism durin g th e Second Great Awakening. Smith said he experienced a series of visi ons , including one in 1820 during which he saw "two personages" (whom h e eve ntually described as God the Father and Jesus Christ), and anothe r in 182 3 in which an angel directed him to a buried book of golden plat es inscri bed with a Judeo-Christian history of an ancient American civil ization. I n 1830, Smith published what he said was an English translatio n of thes e plates called the Book of Mormon. The same year he organize d the Churc h of Christ, calling it a restoration of the early Christia n church. Memb ers of the church were later called "Latter Day Saints" o r "Mormons", an d Smith announced a revelation in 1838 that renamed the c hurch as The Chu rch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

In 1831, Smith and his followers moved west, planning to build a commun a l American Zion. They first gathered in Kirtland, Ohio, and establishe d a n outpost in Independence, Missouri, which was intended to be Zion' s "cen ter place". During the 1830s, Smith sent out missionaries, publish ed reve lations, and supervised construction of the Kirtland Temple. Beca use of t he collapse of the church-sponsored Kirtland Safety Society Anti -Bankin g Company, violent skirmishes with non-Mormon Missourians, and th e Mormo n extermination order, Smith and his followers established a ne w settleme nt at Nauvoo, Illinois, where he became a spiritual and politi cal leader . In 1844, when the Nauvoo Expositor criticized Smith's powe r and practic e of polygamy, Smith and the Nauvoo city council ordered th e destructio n of their printing press, inflaming anti-Mormon sentiment . Fearing an in vasion of Nauvoo, Smith rode to Carthage, Illinois, to st and trial, but w as killed when a mob stormed the jailhouse.

Smith published many revelations and other texts that his followers rega r d as scripture. His teachings discuss the nature of God, cosmology, fam il y structures, political organization, and religious collectivism. Hi s fol lowers regard him as a prophet comparable to Moses and Elijah. Seve ral re ligious denominations identify as the continuation of the church t hat h e organized, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sai nts an d the Community of Christ.

6th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was an American religious leader who served as the sixth presiden t o f The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He wa s th e nephew of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint moveme nt, a nd was the last president of the LDS Church to have known him perso nally.

On July 1, 1866, Smith became a general authority of the LDS Church wh e n he was ordained an apostle by Brigham Young and sustained as a counse lo r to the First Presidency, where he served until Young's death. Howeve r , he was not sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostle s u ntil the church's October 1867 conference. On February 28, 1874, Smit h le ft for his second mission to England, serving as president of the Eu ropea n Mission from 1874 to 1875, returning home upon the death of Firs t Presi dency member George A. Smith. He was then called to preside ove r the Davi s Stake until he left again in the spring of 1877 for his thir d mission t o England. When news arrived of the death of Young, Smith wa s released an d returned home. The following year, Smith served an Easter n States Missi on with Orson Pratt, visiting noteworthy places in the his tory of the chu rch in Missouri, Ohio, New York and Illinois. During thi s trip they met w ith and interviewed David Whitmer.

In October 1880, three years after Young's death, Smith was named seco n d counselor in the First Presidency to church president John Taylor, se rv ing from 1880 to 1887. He later served as second counselor to Wilfor d Woo druff (1889–98), and as second counselor to Lorenzo Snow (1898–1901 ). Smi th was appointed first counselor to Snow on the death of first cou nselo r George Q. Cannon, but, as Snow himself died only four days later , Smit h never served in that position. He succeeded Snow as president o f the LD S Church and president of the Salt Lake Temple. He served as pre sident o f the temple until 1911, when he transferred the responsibilit y to Antho n H. Lund.

Smith also served as editor of the Improvement Era and Juvenile Instruct o r, and general superintendent of the Sunday School and Young Men's Mutu a l Improvement Association.

Smith felt it was important for Utah to become a state, and thereby elim i nate the ongoing federal supervision of Utah Territory. Following the o ff icial discontinuance of new plural marriages by Woodruff in 1890, an d th e dissolution of the Mormon People's Party in 1891, Smith champione d th e anti-polygamy Republican Party in Utah.

In September 1891, Smith received a presidential pardon from U.S. Presid e nt Benjamin Harrison in relation to Smith's practice of plural marriage .

LDS Church President
After the death of church president Lorenzo Snow, Smith was chosen by t h e apostles of the church as Snow's successor. Smith was set apart as Pr es ident of the Church on October 17, 1901, with Presiding Patriarch Joh n Sm ith acting as voice.[18] This action was ratified by a special confe renc e and solemn assembly of the priesthood on November 10, 1901. He cho se Jo hn R. Winder and Anthon H. Lund as his counselors. After Winder die d, Lun d became the first counselor and Smith's second cousin, John Henr y Smith , became the second counselor.

Polygamy issues
One of the first issues Smith faced was the ongoing difficulties for t h e church due to the continuing practice of plural marriage. Smith suppo rt ed apostle Reed Smoot's candidacy for the U.S. Senate, but Smoot's ele cti on was contested on the grounds that he was an officer in a church wh ic h continued to countenance polygamous marriages. The Senate investigat io n again focused national attention on Mormon marriages and political i nfl uence. Additional attention was given to Smith because of his opposit io n to the election and re-election of Utah's senior U.S. Senator, non-M orm on Thomas Kearns. Following his appearance before a Senate panel in 1 904 , Smith took steps to prevent any surreptitious addition of new plura l ma rriages within the church. On April 6, 1904, Smith issued an order a nd de claration in the general conference of the church, popularly referr ed t o as the "second manifesto", and declared that any church officer wh o per formed a plural marriage, as well as the offending couple, would b e excom municated. He clarified that the church's policy against new plur al marri ages applied worldwide, and not just in the United States. Two m embers o f the Quorum of the Twelve, John W. Taylor and Matthias F. Cowle y, resign ed in 1905 following these announcements. Smith continued to li ve with hi s five plural wives as did other Mormon polygamists. In 1906 , Smith was b rought to trial on a charge of unlawful cohabitation with f our women in a ddition to his lawful wife; he pleaded guilty and was fine d $300, the max imum penalty then permitted under the law.

Other noteworthy actions
Smith gave more influence to the Presiding Patriarch of the church tha n h ad any president since Joseph Smith. The church's presiding patriarch , Jo hn Smith, was his elder half-brother. During his presidency, Smith a ppare ntly pushed to change the order in which church leaders were sustai ned i n general conferences. He intended to have the presiding patriarc h sustai ned before even himself (as president of the church), consisten t with hi s interpretation of Doctrine and Covenants Section 124 and earl y historic al precedent. This met with opposition from the other apostles , and the p roposal was not realized.

In 1906, Smith went on a tour to Europe, becoming the first LDS Church p r esident to travel outside of North America during his presidential tenu re .

In 1908, Smith organized a committee to standardize and reform the Aaron i c Priesthood quorums. This committee standardized the age requirement s fo r young men to be ordained to the office of Teacher or Priest.

Smith's seventeen-year presidential administration made efforts toward i m proving the church's damaged relationships with the federal governmen t an d related issues dealing with the church's financial situation. Th e admin istration acquired historic sites, constructed numerous meetingho uses, an d expanded the church system of educational academies and univer sities. H e also oversaw a continued growth in church membership.

During Smith's presidential tenure, the LDS Church constructed and dedic a ted the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial near South Royalton, Vermont . I t was dedicated by Smith on December 23, 1905, the 100th anniversar y of J oseph Smith's birth. Also during Smith's presidency, the Seagull M onumen t at Temple Square in Salt Lake City was dedicated on October 1, 1 913. I n 1913, Boy Scouting became the official youth activity program fo r the c hurch's young men. During much of his presidential tenure, Smit h oversa w the planning and construction of the Hawaiian Temple in Laie , Hawaii, o ne of his part-time residences.

Death
Smith died of pneumonia resulting from pleurisy in Salt Lake City on Nov e mber 19, 1918, and was succeeded by Heber J. Grant. Due to the widespre a d influenza pandemic of 1918–20, a graveside service was held, rather t ha n a public funeral. Smith was interred in the Salt Lake City Cemeter y o n November 22, 1918.

Ina Donna Coolbrith (March 10, 1841 – February 29, 1928), born Josephi n e Donna Smith, was an American poet, writer, librarian, and a prominen t f igure in the San Francisco Bay Area literary community. Called the "S wee t Singer of California", she was the first California Poet Laureate a nd t he first poet laureate of any American state.

Coolbrith, born the niece of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sa i nts founder Joseph Smith, left the Mormon community as a child to ente r h er teens in Los Angeles, California, where she began to publish poetr y. S he terminated a youthful failed marriage to make her home in San Fra ncisc o, and met writers Bret Harte and Charles Warren Stoddard with who m she f ormed the "Golden Gate Trinity" closely associated with the liter ary jour nal Overland Monthly. Her poetry received positive notice from c ritics an d established poets such as Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce and Alfr ed Lord Te nnyson. She held literary salons at her home in Russian Hill—i n this wa y she introduced new writers to publishers. Coolbrith befriende d the poe t Joaquin Miller and helped him gain global fame.

While Miller toured Europe and lived out their mutual dream of visitin g L ord Byron's tomb, Coolbrith cared for his Wintu daughter and member s of h er own family. As a result, she came to reside in Oakland and acce pted th e position of city librarian. Her poetry suffered as a result o f her lon g work hours, but she mentored a generation of young readers in cluding Ja ck London and Isadora Duncan. After she served for 19 years, O akland's li brary patrons called for reorganization, and Coolbrith was fi red. She mov ed back to San Francisco and was invited by members of the B ohemian Clu b to be their librarian.

Coolbrith began to write a history of California literature, including m u ch autobiographical material, but the fire following the 1906 San Franc is co earthquake consumed her work. Author Gertrude Atherton and Coolbrit h' s Bohemian Club friends helped set her up again in a new house, and sh e r esumed writing and holding literary salons. She traveled by train t o Ne w York City several times and, with fewer worldly cares, greatly inc rease d her poetry output.

On June 30, 1915, Coolbrith was named California's poet laureate, and s h e continued to write poetry for eight more years. Her style was more th a n the usual melancholic or uplifting themes expected of women—she inclu de d a wide variety of subjects in her poems, which were noted as being " sin gularly sympathetic" and "palpably spontaneous". Her sensuous descrip tion s of natural scenes advanced the art of Victorian poetry to incorpor ate g reater accuracy without trite sentiment, foreshadowing the Imagis t schoo l and the work of Robert Frost. California poet laureate Carol Mu ske-Duke s wrote of Coolbrith's poems that, though they "were steeped i n a high te a lavender style", influenced by a British stateliness, "Cali fornia remai ned her inspiration."
