Obituary:
Mrs. Ann Dearden Bushnell, 73, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Salt Lak e C ity of causes incident to age.

She was born Oct. 8, 1878, in Fillmore, a daughter of Thomas and Charlot t e Davis Dearden. She was married to Joshua B. Bushnell Dec 17, 1898, i n F illmore and it later was sealed in the Manti Latter-day Saints Temple . Af ter their marriage the couple moved to Meadow.

Mr. Bushnell died in 1942 in Meadow. Mrs. Bushnell resided with a son, R e ed T. Bushnell, in Meadow following her husband's death. For the past f iv e years she had been living alone.

Surviving are two sons, Clarence H. Bushnell, Clearfield, and Reed T. Bu s hnell, Salt Lake City; three daughters, Mrs. Grace Cooper, Washington ; Mr s. Florence Anderson, Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. Oleen Bach, Lovelo ck, N ev.; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Smith, Ely, Nev., and Mrs. Fannie Ash man, F illmore; 17 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, one son , Nolan J . Bushnell, died last February.

The body was taken to Delta, Thursday.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Meadow L D S Wa r d Chapel with Bishop Melvin Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Mead o w Cemetery.

Bertha Bushnell Stephenson
(1903-1946)

Bertha Bushnell was born 6 July 1903 in Meadow, Millard Co.,Utah to Dani e l Brockbank Bushnell and Susan Dearden. She was the tenth child born i nt o a family of fourteen children. The Gospel of Jesus Christ was honore d a nd lived in this family.

“Childhood on a farm was busy and wonderful. There was a row of untrim m ed potawatomi bushes that ran north of the fruit orchard. The world's l ov eliest play houses were made in there. The trees in the orchard were f ul l of bird nests. The birds didn't seem to be afraid of us. They laid t h e prettiest eggs. There were humming birds, bluebirds, blue jays, sparr ow s, mourning doves and meadow larks just to name a few. We played in th e b uggy shed on wool sacks and on the front lawn under the lilac bush. O ur c hildhood was beautiful. It was out in this orchard that my sister to ok m e to comb my hair so my crying wouldn't disturb my Father, sister Lo ttie , and brother Dan when they were down with typhoid fever in July o f 1912.
“Often an Indian friend from the Indian Reservation would come and s i t under a tree south of the house. His name was Jake. He had a tall th i n black dog. If we saw him there we would tell Mother. She would say, ' Oh , I guess he is hungry'. Then she would have us help her prepare foo d fo r him, which he would share with his dog. On Sunday Jake would ofte n com e to church and sit at the back of the church on the wood box. The n he wo uld come down after and eat with us. He liked our family and we l iked him .
“In December of 1907, Bertha had a bad case of croup and from that ti m e on, during her life, she had a weakness in her lungs. In 1911 she ha d a nother sick spell from which she had a hard time recovering. She deve lope d a cough and would spit up puss sometimes streaked with blood. He r paren ts would take her to doctors, but they seemed at a loss to know w hat wa s causing it.
“Bertha was small. She always laughingly said it was because she was t h e tenth in the family of fourteen and she was the tithing of the famil y a nd they were cheating on their tithing. One day Father heard her sa y thi s and he brought her to task in a hurry. He wanted her to understan d sh e wasn't lacking in any way and that he and Mother never skimped o n thei r tithing either. She wasn't small in any other way. She had suc h a big c haritable heart, always so kind and interested in everyone espe cially tho se having a cross to bear.
“In June of 1919 our Father took her[Bertha] to SLC where Dr. Middlet o n and Dr. Stucky removed her tonsils. She had her Patriarchal Blessin g a t this time also, and went to recuperate at our sister Flora Stott' s hom e in Monticello, San Juan Co.,Utah.
“In the year 1921, our Mother and Father went to Provo to care for o u r brother Del when he was very ill. Bertha was left in charge of siblin g s Lon, Lee, Alice and Everet. She also attended to" all of the home res po nsibilities. She worked like a beaver! We all loved Bertha and tried h ar d to help and please her. Our parents were gone many weeks before De l wa s well enough to be brought home. Our parents were full of praise fo r Ber tha for how well she had done.,
“Another time they went on an excursion to the Manti Temple and left Be r tha in charge. I remember it very well because I had fallen on the cor a l rock down at the Warm Springs and really hurt my knee. Infection soo n s et in. Bertha cared for it as well as everything else. A heavy towe l wa s folded over the knee and a large pan of hot salt water was poure d on th e knee for twenty minutes four times a day after which the knee w as douse d with peroxide or bathing alcohol. It was healed by the time th e folks c ame home. They could depend on Bertha and gave her lots of resp onsibility .

“One school year, our parents sent Bertha to St.George to college to s e e if the warm climate would help her. She boarded with Bro. and Sis. Wh it ehead who were very good to her. She enjoyed her school year but it di dn' t seem to help her physical condition. While there, she met Ezra Tobl er , who later came to Meadow and proposed marriage. It was quite a decis io n for her to make. Mark Stephenson had courted her and also had propos e d marriage. She liked them both. On account of her health, she hesitat e d marrying anyone. Then she read her Patriarchal Blessing and it promis e d her a husband and family. Our parents knew and loved Mark. When she a sk ed for their advise about who she should choose as a husband, they fav ore d Mark.
“Before Bertha was married, she worked in Steven's Store in Fillmore a n d for William T. Tew, the Seminary teacher for the Millard High School . B ertha lived across the street east of the Seminary Bldg. The Tew fami ly l oved Bertha and she loved them.
“In the year 1924 Lon, Lee and I got a little house in Fillmore wher e w e were going to batch it while going to school. The house was locate d acr oss from Uncle Jack and Aunt Lizzie Davie's home. While living ther e, Lo n was called on a mission to Arizona. I remember Bertha and Mark st oppe d there to bring us some bread and food from home when they were o n thei r way to SLC to the Temple to get married. This was October 6th. T hey wer e married on the eighth of October in the Salt Lake Temple.
“Bertha's folks had a lovely party for them at their home. During th e e vening, some of the young people made a fire on the lawn. They made i t o n a large piece of sheet iron, tin or the like. The next day there wa s n o grass where the fire had been. We called it the 'Birth-Mark'. It to ok s ome time to get the grass growing there again.”

The First Year of Marriage From Mark's Sister Bea
“It couldn't have been too long after Mark and Bertha were married th a t I remember riding uptown with them in their Model A Ford. They were k id ding and laughing about the last two dollars they had and how they wer e g oing to make it last until they could sell a cow or something. When w e go t upon the highway (Main Street), a fellow stopped them and asked th em t o donate to a fund for a family whose mother had died with poisonin g (Coo ns). She had a large family of small children and had accidentall y take n some poison thinking it was cough medicine. Mark looked at Berth a and s omehow a message must have gone between them because he reached i n his po cket and handed the fellow two dollars. I have wondered many tim es sinc e how they managed without it.
“I was with Bertha a lot the first few years after they were marrie d . I thought it was a real treat to stay overnight with her while Mark w a s at the farm. It was especially attractive to me after Veleta was bor n . I loved that little girl as much as any eleven year old girl can lo v e a baby...and that is an awfully lot. There was a tiny little chicke n co op back of the house where Bertha kept a few big fat hens. I believ e the y must have provided her with all of her eggs plus a little 'pin mo ney' n ow and then. I remember several times she gave me two or three egg s to bu y candy with.
“I especially remember one experience we had while they were livin g i n a little house in Holden which belonged to the Kenneys. It had jus t tw o rooms---the kitchen and the living room combined with a cook stov e in t here and a bedroom with a heating stove. One cold winter morning w hile Be rtha was getting breakfast, I was rocking Veleta in front of a ro aring ho t fire in the heater in the bedroom. For some reason I happene d to look u p just in time to see the whole stove pipe falling right on t op of us. So mehow I managed to fall out of the way far enough that it di dn't hit us , but the room was filled with soot and smoke, and the flame s were shooti ng out of the hole where the stove pipe fits on. It was fri ghtening. Bert ha quickly wrapped Veleta in a quilt off the bed and I ra n with her to th e Kenney's home which was on the other corner of the blo ck. They were jus t eating breakfast, but all of the menfolk went over t o help Bertha. Wha t happened from there I can't remember but I probabl y went home to get re ady for school.”

“Just before Veleta was born, on a sunny afternoon, Mark went out in t o the garden to get some melons they were going to take to some of the i r friends. He called Bertha to come help him choose. He thought she cou l d tell the ripe ones better than he could. When she was in the melon pa tc h she got her first warning that their first little spirit was comin g t o town. She ignored the warning thinking it was something she had eat en . They did their visiting, stopped for ice cream at McKeese Confection ery , came home and went to bed. When Bertha did awaken there was not muc h ti me before Veleta made her appearance. Our Mother went over and helpe d a t first, then I went over to help when Mother came home.
“While they lived in the north home, Bertha planted, weeded, and water e d the garden south of their home when the men folk were out to the far m w hich was most of the time. Also there was a cow to be milked, and sto ck t hat we had in town to be fed and cared for. The first summer after m arria ge, she spent out at the farm cooking for the men folk. Veleta's fi rst su mmer was spent there.
“Mark and Bertha were most generous and kind to their brothers and sis t ers. One example, and there were many, Mark came in from the farm earl y o ne 4th of July morning to be with his family to celebrate the day. H e re marked to Bertha, 'that he guessed they would have to make their ow n fu n as he didn't have a nickel to spend'. She handed him $1.75 sayin g 'the y should have lots of ice cream as she had managed to save that mu ch'. Ma rk went over to his folks. When he came back he said, 'I'm sorr y dear, it 's a holiday and Allen [Mark's brother] was over there withou t a cent t o spend. I couldn't stand it so gave him our money'. It turne d out to b e a wonderful day because they had made Allen's day a happie r one.
“Bertha and Mark had real love for each other and for their family.”

“I remember the morning when Bertha came over to our home and showe d m y Mother how swollen and stiff several of her knuckles on one hand we re . From here on it was a long hard fight for her, but I'm sure that n o on e in all this world has ever taken pain and suffering with more cour age t han she did. Even after she got so terribly bad, I never heard he r compla in. As Bertha and Mark's children were born, arthritis commence d to set i nto her body, especially her feet, knees and hands.”

“Bertha spent several months in a hotel in Ogden in 1933 and 34 so s h e could take treatments from doctors who were there. When she got so b a d that she was spitting up blood, she went to the LDS hospital in SLC . Th e doctors recommended a year of bed rest. After Blake and I were mar rie d we came to Provo to live. Bertha came to live with us and start he r yea r of bed rest. Veleta lived with Grandpa and Grandma Stephenson whi le goi ng to school in Holden. Margene also came to live with Blake and I . Mar k would visit when he could get away from the farm.
“At one point Bertha broke out with boils all over her back. I place d h ot steam towels and ointment on them. I told her that now she had eve ryth ing that Job had. Bertha answered, 'No, my family have never turne d again st me'.
“Gloria was such a blessing. While Bertha was carrying her, she was fr e e from rheumatism pain. Gloria was born in Holden in the old home nort h o f the big house on January 1, 1936 at 20 minutes after midnight. Mar k wa s Superintendent of the Holden ward Sunday School. Because New Year s da y was a holiday, he took the youth of the ward for a sleigh ride. Be rth a was so proud of him! They lived that year in Holden until Bertha' s heal th became so bad that they decided to move to SLC to be closer t o doctors . In May or June of 1937 they moved to an apartment on 6th Eas t and 629 S outh in SLC. Mark worked for the Arden Clover Leaf Dairy. The n he worke d for International Harvester. At night he did Janitorial wor k at Auerbac h's to help supplement the family income. Mark bought a hous e in SLC at 1 44 Hampton Ave. when Gloria was two years old. At this tim e arthritis too k over Bertha's body. Deposits of calcium formed at her e lbows. Her fee t were pulled out of shape. The pain she suffered only sh e and her Heaven ly Father knew how much.
“When Blake and I moved to SLC, Mark and Bertha insisted we move in wi t h them while we looked for a place to live and worked long enough to g e t a pay check. They made us feel like we were doing them a favor inste a d of what it was. Bertha was in a wheelchair by this time but when I w a s asked to teach a primary class, she insisted I do so and she tende d m y daughter Kay in the baby buggy while I did. Gloria and my daughte r LoRe ta had a great time playing together. They were the best of friend s and s pent many happy times together now that they lived only a block a way fro m each other.
“Because it was hard for Bertha to go other places, we were often at h e r home when we got together. Most of the time she would plan activitie s a nd then invite us. Bertha, playing from her wheelchair, would often w in . She had a wonderful memory and sense of humor.
“Mark and Bertha had a little old Ford car. This small car could hold ve r y many people and took them to: Millard County to visit, Black Rock, Sa lt air, Liberty Park, picnics, Sunday rides, shopping, church, funerals , wed dings, visiting folks, and yes, even to the LDS Hospital to bring o ur bab y, Kay, home. Oh! what fun!”

Gloria's Memories
Veleta and Margene had to learn early to take responsibility and to wo r k hard because our dear Mother[Bertha] was so crippled with rheumatoi d ar thritis, that it fell on them to bathe and care for her and share th e coo king and cleaning. Our Dad[Mark] helped all he could when he wasn' t worki ng. On Sunday, he always cooked a nice Sunday meal while we wer e at Sunda y School. He also took care of the outside work, and kept ou r Model A ca r sparkling clean inside and out.
Our Mother was the heart of our home and her language was the langua g e of love.
I never remember her losing her temper but I do remember her sadness w h en we would argue whose turn it was to do some chore. One vivid memor y wa s seeing her bow her head and in a quiet voice say, “Oh, if only I c oul d do it myself”. She would direct our work from her wheelchair (a whe el c hair made from an arm less kitchen chair that had rollers inserted i nto t he bottom of each leg). She sat on a regular bed pillow for a cushi on. W e each had our chores to do and everyone including Dad would work u ntil t he house was clean on Saturday.
There was a sweet spirit in our home because our Dad and Mom truly lov e d each other and each one of us and we knew it. They taught us to kno w an d love Heavenly Father and Jesus, to pray and expect answers, to b e respe ctful to our teachers and to appreciate our blessings. We were no t rich a s far as the world would judge and if it were not for help fro m our exten ded family (uncles and aunts) we would have gone hungry at ti mes. Uncle L on and Aunt Dorothy would bring us food from the grocery sto re they owne d in SLC.
I remember Mama as a wonderful storyteller. She had many poems, stori e s and rhymes memorized. Some of them that I enjoyed while I was gettin g m y hair combed or when I was sick or bored were: Epaminondas, Little O rpha n Annie, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Red Riding Hood, Beauty an d th e Beast, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Cinderella, One Eye, Two Eyes, Thr ee Ey es and others. I remember her reading Heidi to me a little bit eac h day . Bible stories were also some of my favorites.
We used to have a lot of fun in our home. Friends were welcomed, gam e s were enjoyed and popcorn was popped on the old coal stove when it glo we d red hot! Taffy or honey candy were pulled. Sometimes Veleta made div ini ty or fudge. Home was a refuge where we were loved and our bumps an d brui ses were healed.
We never lacked for friends and they were always made to feel welcom e . We loved family gatherings, visiting, playing games, and singing toge th er.
I [Gloria] am going to share some of the memories I have of my Mothe r . I was the baby of the family, nine years younger than my sister Vele t a and seven years younger than my sister Margene so when I was growin g u p they were busy going to school, working at jobs, dating etc. This a llow ed me a different view of my mother's later years.
Prayer was a vital force in our lives. Once, when I was very young a n d couldn't find something I needed, Mama asked if I had prayed about i t . I hadn't and when I did, I went straight to the item I was looking fo r . This was the beginning of my testimony of prayer. Another time whe n I w as about eight years old, when Mama and I were alone, Mama was i n a lot o f pain and she asked me to go to the drugstore to buy her som e aspirin. I t was night and I was afraid to go at night and especially b ecause I woul d have to go past a house that I thought was haunted. Mam a prayed with m e and I went and arrived home safely giving me a sure kno wledge that Heav enly Father, who loves us, hears our prayers and answer s them for our bes t good.
Another great lesson she taught me was that when I was afraid, discour a ged or felt Satan's presence I could sing a church hymn and the bad spi ri ts would have to leave. I remember her singing and teaching me many pr eci ous songs.
She taught us to do what was asked of us willingly and cheerfully. W e a ll had chores to do. The jobs I remember as mine were to wash the kit che n chairs each Saturday, shine the metal parts of the stove with Bon A mi , help clean out drawers and wash her feet. Before I would leave for s cho ol, I would get things ready so Mama could copy the family names of o ur a ncestors that Aunt Flora would find on her trips to Britain. Mama wo uld g et them ready so the work could be done for them in the Temple .
One night when Dad was working and Veleta and Margene were at Mutual , M ama taught me about the Crucifixion of our Savior. I'll never forge t th e feeling I got when I realized what Jesus Christ went through for u s. I t was hard for me to understand that some people actually hammered n ail s in his hands and feet and treated Him so cruelly.
I would come home from school at lunch time to eat lunch with Mama. Th e re was a Bible story program on the radio at this time that we would en jo y together. After school I would hurry home to listen to other shows w hil e I rubbed her back. We would talk about what I had learned at schoo l. W hen my arm would get tired, she would be patient while I rested it . The n when a new show started again I would rub some more. “That feel s so goo d”, she would say. It really made me feel like I was a big help . One da y I didn't come right home from school but instead walked home w ith a fri end and stayed and played. When I did get home, Mama was very u nhappy wit h me and so disappointed. She explained how worried she had be en about m e and how badly she had needed me. I tried to hurry home afte r that.
When I was sick, it was a treat to sleep in Mama's bed and look at h e r pretty wallpaper and her beautiful curtains. They were salmon colore d a nd crossed over so prettily. They made the room so cheerful! I didn' t lik e the mustard plasters though nor the caster oil .
I never heard a swear word until I was 9 years old and a boy on the sc h ool playground swore. I felt sorry for him that he didn't realize how t er rible it sounded.
When I was in the 2nd grade, I wanted a Sonja Henie doll like my frien d 's with her own suitcase and lots of clothes. Mama took my last year' s so ldier doll and painstakingly with aching fingers made her many lovel y an d beautiful clothes and there she was on Christmas morning in her ve ry ow n suitcase.
Mama had a great amount of patience. One night, again when we were alo n e, I wanted to learn to crochet. I was all thumbs and kept crying becau s e it was hard to learn but she kept talking to me, patiently helping a n d encouraging me to learn until I mastered a chain. It was hard for he r t o teach me because her fingers would no longer do as she wanted the m to d o and she couldn't show me very well. By this time she spent mos t of he r time in her bed. Arthritis had taken over her body. When she wa s lyin g down her knees would not straighten out. Her hands and fingers a nd fee t were pulled out of shape. Deposits of calcium were at her elbows . The p ain she suffered only she and her Heavenly Father knew how much . Often m y family heard her pray, “Father, please help me to endure to t he end, he lp me to end it right.” This prayer was answered. She was fait hful and en dured to the end. Her passing was a sweet experience for he r husband an d family.

Bertha died Sunday March 31, 1946. The funeral was held at the Harva r d Ward Chapel on 2nd East and Williams in Salt Lake City and she is bur ie d in the Salt Lake Cemetery.

Daniel B. Bushnell - Meadow - Funeral for Daniel B. Bushnell, 18, who di e d on Saturday, Dec 7, at his home in Meadow, will be held in the Meado w W ard Chapel Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

He was born in Fillmore, Utah June 22, 1862, son of Elizabeth Brockban k a nd John Bushnell who emigrated from England in 1852.

Mr. Bushnell was a High Priest and an active Church member all his lif e . Surviving him are his widow, Susan Dearden Bushnell, eight children : Mr s. Ezra Dame, Leland M. Bushnell, and Everet M. Bushnell of Meadow ; and M rs. C. Orval Stott, Mrs. Mark Stephenson, Mrs. Blake Stephenson , Dan D. B ushnell and Alonzo D. Bushnell of Salt Lake City; the followin g brother s and sister, Mrs. Alison Stott, Howard B. Bushnell, and Joshu a B. Bushne ll, of Meadow; 30 grand children, and six great-grandchildren .




Alonzo (Lon) Davies Bushnell was born on November 18, 1905 in Meadow, Mi l lard, Utah to Daniel Brockbank Bushnell and Susan Dearden. While he se rv ed his mission to California as a young man, he met the lovely Doroth y Jo sephine Cox. They both served faithfully as missionaries, however u pon t he completion of her mission he sent Dorothy a letter requesting th at sh e not make any major changes in her life until he was released fro m his m ission. When he returned home, they began the courting process a nd foun d that they were very much in love and well suited for each other . Lon a nd Dorothy were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 28th, 192 7 .
They started out their marriage in a 2 room house in Meadow and Lon's fa m ily was very helpful to them. Lon would herd sheep west of town and Do ro thy would join him in the summers. Because herding sheep did not allo w L on to be home for weeks, he was not particularly fond of the job an d ofte n looked for better opportunities. However, jobs and money wer e scarc e during this time.
A job as a fireman on a train hauling ore became available to Lon in El y , Nevada so he packed up his family to be with him while he worked ther e . They endured bad living conditions. During this time, a daughter w a s born to them on June 1st, 1928 in Meadow, Boneta Josephine. When Lo n w as laid off from his fireman job, he and Dorothy and Boneta (Bonnie ) pack ed everything that they owned in their old broken down model T For d and d rove to Salt Lake City to live with Dorothy's family. They wer e guided b y the hand of Providence because their car got them where the y were goin g and never ran again. They lived in very humble circumstanc es, but fel t very blessed. Lon was able to make a livelihood by haulin g cattle. Th eir second daughter was born to them at this time in Holy C ross Hospita l - Donna Dean Bushnell. The four of them then made anothe r move back t o Meadow to stay with family, while Lon sent to Southern Ut ah to sell pea ches. He did well at fruit selling, so the family was the n able to retur n to Salt lake City. At this time, Lon was able to fin d a job with Clove r Leaf Dairy delivering milk to stores and restaurants . He left at 4 a m and walked a distance to work, because they had no ca r .
One day, an opportunity to buy an apartment house store came to Lon an d D orothy. Both of them felt that this was a move that they should mak e i n order to provide some financial relief. Dorothy ran the store fro m 7a m to 10 pm every day, including Sundays. It proved to be a good inv estme nt, so Lon was able to quit his job at the Dairy and help with th e store . They were especially grateful that now they could stop operati ng the s tore on Sundays and now they could attend church as a family. T hey als o bought a refrigerated meat counter and Grandpa Cox taught Lon h ow to cu t meat.
With the store no longer open on Sundays, Lon was able to be more full y i nvolved in Church activities and he was able to serve a Stake mission . T hen a great opportunity came his way in the form of a job offer work ing a t Associated Foods. This was became a huge blessing and better sou rce o f income.
One Saturday when Lon was at work, he lost his speech ability and the u s e of his arms and legs. He had suffered a stroke and because of his hi g h blood pressure, he was given very little hope for recovery. 22 mont h s later, Lon suffered another stroke and loss of memory. In the hospit al , Lon was given a blessing and then his memory registered better and h e w as able to remember grocery orders. Truly a miracle had occurred. H owev er, the doctors cautioned Lon about going to work again - that it w oul d kill him.
Fortunately, a job opportunity came to Lon and Dorothy to do baby photog r aphy in the San Francisco Bay area. This was a totally new venture fo r t his couple and they prayerfully considered it. After years in Utah , Lon , Dorothy and Donna made the big move to the Bay area to make thi s opport unity work. Dorothy and Donna ran the business and Lon was abl e to help . Amid the rigorous schedule of doing baby pictures for sever al hospita ls, Dorothy and Lon were able to enjoy several trips together ; to Hawai i and an Alaskan cruise. They also enjoyed visits from Bonnie 's famil y - Keith and their seven children, who would visit from Missour i. In 19 73, Lon's health took a serious turn for the worse. His fee t were swell ing and his veins were very dark. Doctors wanted to amputat e his legs be cause of blood clots. It was a difficult decision to submi t to this. Ho wever, on August 20th, Lon suffered a massive stroke and n ever regained c onsciousness. He passed beyond the veil on that day, le aving behind hi s beloved Dorothy, Bonnie and her husband Keith, Donna, a nd seven grandch ildren. Leland Mainwaring Bushnell 1908-1972, A Life Sketch by his Wife, Lola Du n can Bushnell

I sit here this hot, windy summer day, trying to write my husband, Lela n d M. Bushnell's history. I don't know too much about his early boyhoo d da ys, and have waited too long, for help from him, as he has gone ou t of m y life now. Seven years have slipped by since his passing, July 9 , 1972.

He was born to Daniel Bushnell and Susan Dearden Bushnell on the 23rd d a y of April 1908, the thirteenth of fifteen children .

The town was rather small when we were growing up, and still is. Lee ( a s we called him) was a little older than I, so we went with a differen t c rowd of boys and girls.

He talked a little about his family life. They were farmers by trade a n d also had a sheep herd. He lived in the last house on the street. He m en tioned the big vegetable gardens that were planted in the field next t o t he house. It seemed that everyone planted a watermelon patch, so ever yon e was well-supplied with his own melons. But to a group of boys and g irls , the melons in the neighbor's gardens were always more enjoyable, e speci ally at night when it was more convenient and safer to help yoursel f. W e had many watermelon busts on the side of the ditch banks. We neve r ha d a knife so we would drop the melons, the lush, red, ripe inside su re wa s enjoyable to eat out of your fingers, unless they turned out to b e gree n, which most of the time seemed to happen. But it was fun, we tho ught .

Livestock was raised too, along with alfalfa, grain, etc. There were ple n ty of young chickens running loose in the corrals. So once in a whil e a c hick roast, from someone else's coop seemed to be the order of a pa rty, a lways spontaneous, never planned, and I am sure Les was with the g roup, o r groups, as these raids took place .

In spite of his childhood pranks and being mischievous, Les was a good b o y, congenial, and pleasant to be around, and a good worker. Being the t hi rd to the last child of a large family, his father and mother were get tin g along in years, so Les more or less took the responsibility of th e hom e and farm early in his young life. I remember his mother saying, i f sh e wanted to get things done she would enlist Lee's help .

Every spring, Lee quit school early to help with the lambing at the she e p herd. Then trailed them to the mountain, where they stayed all summe r . The sheep camp was a covered wagon equipped with a stove, bed, etc. a n d was pulled by horses up the canyon while the sheep were working thei r w ay slowly up the trail, eating as they went. Then Lee brought them ba ck i n the fall to winter in the desert. Lee was the sheepherder, helpe d alon g with several good sheep dogs or sometimes a camp tender. I remem ber mor e than once during the summer, riding on horse back seven miles t o the mo untain top, to have dinner at the sheep camp. There were alway s dour doug h biscuits cooked on the camp stove and plenty of mutton. Som etimes the b iscuits were black on the outside and dough on the inside, b ut not Lee' s as he was known as one of the best cooks on the mountain. W e were alway s hungry so it tasted really good. At the time, I was onl y a kid and he w as not interested in me.

Lee never missed a Deer Hunt, and always brought one home. He didn't d o s o well with the Pheasant Hunt. He said, "They flew up unexpectedly a d sca red him." He came home empty-handed more than once .

He enjoyed sports. While in high school, he was on the varsity basketba l l team. He enjoyed school, and seemed to be in most activities, and a p ar t of things. His senior year was spent with his older brother, Dan an d wi fe Melba, in Provo.

Lee was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Au g ust 1, 1916, and confirmed a member of the church by Daniel B. Bushnel l , his father, August 6, 1916. I don't know when Lee graduated from Prim ar y, or when he was ordained a Deacon, but I'm sure it was a very specia l o ccasion.

He was ordained a Priest in the Aaronic Priesthood November 15, 1925 . b y his father, who held the office of High Priest. He was ordained a n Elde r in the Melchizedek Priesthood December 20, 1931 by his brother D aniel D . Bushnell.

Leland was sustained as Second Counselor in the Meadow Ward Bishopri c a t the early age of 29, with Milton Beckstrand as Bishop, Thomas Swall ow a s First Counselor, and Venoy Labrum as Ward Clerk. Lee held this off ice f or about seven years.

He was ordained from an Elder to a High Priest September 23, 1937 by Jo h n Wells, who held the office of Presiding Bishop .

Lee worked hard while a member of the Bishopric both physically and spir i tually. Lee was never absent from a meeting of any kind and contribute d k nowledge and wisdom pertaining to the ward's management. While he wa s act ively engaged, the old coal stove, which stood in the middle of th e chape l and heated the building, was replaced by a new heating system a long wit h much more renovation. The Meadow Ward had some property west o f town pl anted to alfalfa and grain from which they obtained most of th e ward's re venue which they used to remodel the building. Lee took car e of the irrig ating on the farm. This entailed much hard work, such as c leaning ditche s from town to the field, as well as taking the water tur n and caring fo r it till it was finished. Often, he was so tired from hi s own labors, h e could hardly go, but he always managed the strength t o get up in the mi ddle of the night and irrigate the church land. I neve r heard him complai n and I'm sure he received many blessings for doing i t. The land produce d well, for Lee was a good farmer .

He loved temple work and went often, taking his car and coaxing other s t o go with him, never going with an empty car. He was often asked to h el p with the temple ordinances.

He was a home teacher for many years. His partners were sometimes olde r m en, but mostly young boys. They never missed getting it done. He wa s alwa ys prepared with a subject and began with prayer. If there was a n eed fo r material things, he made sure it was taken care of. He often off ered hi s own outfits [vehicles] or whatever it called for .

If there was ever a town or church project, Lee was there with his equip m ent starting with his team of horses and later on with his tractor an d eq uipment. He was always busy, working hard and accomplishing much. I f Le e had a fault, it was no play, always work. There should be some rel axati on in everyone's life. He often said he was going to play before h e died . But he never quite made it. He passed away with a camper being b uilt fo r the truck and a down payment on a trip to Hawaii, so both wer e canceled .

Lee held many civic positions. He was the Mayor of Meadow four years , o n the Irrigation Board for many years, and served on the Town Board s ever al times. He held a town board position at the time of his death. Le e wa s full of good ideas and proved to be very capable in each positio n he he ld. His plans were always carried out to the satisfaction of al l concerne d.

Leland had many girlfriends and dates, so he could usually be found at a l l the parties and dances. I suppose you could say that he enjoyed lif e i n general.

The fun times were many when Lee and I started to date. His family h a d a Model T. Ford car, which was one of the nicest in town, so it was f u n to go with him. We were married February 7, 1934, in the Salt Lake Te mp le.

We started our married life in a little two-room house, on the lot whe r e we now live. Our first child was born there, a son, and we named hi m E . Leon. He was born on my Father's birthday, that's why he was give n th e initial E. for Elmer, after his grandfather's name .

Some two years later we moved to Dan's home, Lee's brother's. We had a h a rd time making a living because of the depression. The price of grain h a d fallen to 25 cents per bushel and there was no sale for the cattle. T h e government sent cracked wheat to all who qualified for it, becaus e o f a drought which lasted for three years and made it impossible to gr ow w heat in the valley. We washed some of the wheat and cooked it for ce real . It tasted quite delicious with cream and sugar. The government bou ght o ur veal calves, slaughtered them, and gave them back to us. We bott led th e meat for use in winter and were very glad to get it .

We were living in Dan's big house which was heated with a coal furnace . A t this time, we didn't have enough money to buy coal for it, so we sp en t the coldest winter months in the kitchen with only a cook stove fo r hea t. It was here our second child was born, a little girl. We were s o happ y to have a boy and a girl in our family. We named her Dixie .

It wasn't long after that, when we bought the Vince Adams home down th e s treet a block, because we desperately needed a home of our own. It wa sn' t a new one, but we were comfortable. All this time, Lee was struggli ng t o get farmland for us. We also rented other land to make a better in come . He worked with a team of horses for a long time, so it was a memor abl e day when we bought our first tractor. It was like a new toy and w e ha d to have a lot of new machinery to pull behind it. So the struggl e to li ve went on and on.

Our third and last child, Jim, was borne in Fillmore in a maternity hom e . Our children were all about five years apart .

It wasn't long before they were all grown up. They attended grade scho o l in Meadow and high school in Fillmore. Leon was the first to graduat e a nd then he was called on a mission to the Netherlands. He labored the re f or two and one-half years and completed an honorable mission. We wer e s o proud of him. then Leon attended college in Cedar City. He now live s i n Bountiful with his wife Andrea and their two beautiful children , a gir l and a boy. Leon is a barber and has his own shop. He is also a n antiqu e train dealer.

After completing high school, Dixie attended college for three years a t B .Y.U. She met Dee Allred there and later married him. They now resid e i n Springville and have a lovely new home. They have four boys to thei r cr edit. After sixteen years and a lot of hard work, Dixie has receive d he r degree from Brigham Young University. She is now a qualified schoo l tea cher in Health and Physical Education .

Jim went to the Cumorah Mission in New York after completing his high sc h ool education and attending two years of college in Cedar City. He wa s ve ry successful in the mission field and had the opportunity to partic ipat e in the Cumorah Pageant. He received his Bachelor's and Master's De gree s from Brigham Young University. Jim continued his education at Ohi o Stat e College in Columbus, Ohio and received his Doctorate Degree in C hemica l Engineering. Jim and his wife Sue live in Fillmore where he work s as th e County Agent. They have four children, three girls and one bo y .

Lee worked the farm, milked cows, and raised many crops to give his chil d ren all the advantages that he could, which, I am sure they appreciat e .

Leland was called to be the first counselor in the Meadow Ward Bishopr i c later in life. This time he served with Harold Beckstrand as Bishop , De Lyle Carling as Second Counselor, and Ben Stott as Ward Clerk. He en joye d this time tremendously, as we were a little better off financiall y .

We built a new home in 1964, down on the corner where we first started o u r married life. It was a pleasure to move into it, because of the centr a l heating and all the nice things that go into a new home. We worked to ge ther to build corrals and landscape the surroundings. By now all the c hil dren were married and we were getting older .

It was only eight years from the time we moved in our new home and whi l e Lee was in the Bishopric for the second time that he passed away at t h e age of 64. It came quickly and quietly without warning or any previo u s sickness. It was a terrible shock and was hard to take, but I am than kf ul he went so easily. He often prayed that when his time came and he h a d to go, it would be sudden and without too much sickness or struggle . H e did just that and I am thankful for it. This is my recollection o f Lee' s life although it is very brief.

I am proud to have been a part of Lee's life even if only in a small wa y . We had both happy and sad times, but we both loved being together an d m aking a home for our children, the best way we knew how, and to the b es t of our ability.

Cottonwood Heights, UT—Elva Swallow Lindberg, 104, passed away on May 1 7 , 2021 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Jack Parad is e, who lovingly cared for her the past year and a half.

Elva was born January 21, 1917 in Meadow, Millard, Utah, the daughte r o f Charles Swallow and Isabella Dearden. She grew up in Meadow surroun de d by older siblings, their families, and many friends in this farmin g com munity where her father ran a mercantile store and post office. Fol lowin g in her mother's footsteps, Elva nurtured a colorful garden fille d wit h roses, peonies, iris, and other perennials and annuals.

Elva was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sa i nts. After graduating from Millard High School, she served in the Easte r n States Mission where she met her future spouse. Elva Swallow marrie d Pa ul Franklin Lindberg on September 6, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. T ogeth er, they raised five children. They later served as a senior coupl e in th e Canada, Vancouver Mission.

She served in many church callings including Primary and Relief Societ y . Elva had a special love for children.

With her kindness and concern for others, Elva made friends easily and h e ld those friends close and dear for decades. In her years as a long-ti m e resident of Highland Cove Retirement Community, she welcomed new resi de nts and developed friendships lasting many years.

Her greatest love was her family to which she freely gave in so many way s . She loved her husband, Paul, who adored her. She loved her parents, s ib lings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and Paul's family . E lva, with the support of Paul, cared for two sisters with chronic ill ness es. Time spent with Elva left each child feeling loved, adored, an d value d. Elva appreciated the sacrifices and challenges of her ancestor s and sp ent many hours researching and documenting her family history an d attendi ng the temple.

Elva and Paul spent many days playing golf together and with friends. S h e made two "holes in one." Throughout her life, Elva enjoyed games an d pu tting together puzzles with family and friends.

Elva is survived by her five children: Paula Paradise (Jack) of Cottonwo o d Heights, Randy Lindberg (Susan) of Holladay, Kristine Hiller (Bruce) , L isa Lindberg of Taylorsville, Utah, and Karen Rasmussen (Carl) of Kin gwoo d, Texas; 23 grandchildren and 69 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: Spouse, Paul F, Lindberg. Parents, Charl e s and Isabella Swallow, Siblings: Thomas C. Swallow, Eliza E. Swallow , Iv a S. Bushnell, Laura S. Beckstrand, Noreen S. Highlights of his community service include d Presi dent of Kiwanis and President of BSA Utah National Parks Council . Merlene Stott Cook, 89, of Logan, Utah, passed away Wednesday, March 2 6 , 2008, of causes incident to age.
Merlene was born March 24, 1919, in Monticello, Utah, the second of thr e e daughters born to C. Orval and Flora B. Stott.
Her early childhood was spent in Manti, Utah, where, at the age of 8, s h e was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sai nt s in the baptismal font in the Manti Temple. At age 11, her family mov e d to Logan and into the 11th Ward that met in the basement of the Loga n T abernacle. Years later, during MIA activities in that ward, she met h er f uture husband, Loyal B. Cook. During the next five years they enjoye d dan cing, participating in plays and other MIA and community related ac tiviti es. Shortly after their engagement in December 1939, Loyal too k a job i n Washington, D.C. In September 1940, Merlene took a train to W ashington , D.C., and with no family in attendance, was married to Loya l on Friday , Sept. 13. This marriage was later solemnized in the Logan L DS Temple.
After living in Washington, D.C., for a year and in Salt Lake City f o r a couple of years, Loyal joined his father and his brother Blain e i n a sheep venture in Northwest Colorado. In 1944, Merlene and Loyal m ove d their small family to Craig, Colo., and that was her home for the n ex t 23 years. In 1967, four years following the death of her husband Loy al , Merlene moved back to Logan where she finally was able to finish he r de gree at USU at the age of 50. She took a position in the Counselin g and T esting Office at USU, which she held until retirement.
Three boys and three girls were born to Merlene and Loyal. She devoted f u ll-time to raising the children and keeping up with the busy life o f a sh eepman husband. She was an excellent cook, a great seamstress, a d edicate d quilter, and a wonderful housekeeper and loved to sing, singin g in ever y choir and group that she could. The death of her husband forc ed her t o work outside the home to support her and the children still a t home. Sh e has always been a devoted and committed member of The Churc h of Jesus C hrist of Latter-day Saints, serving for years as a Temple Or dinance Worke r and as Relief Society president, Primary president and a s a full-time m issionary in the Atlanta, Ga., Temple. She also supporte d her husband a s he served many years as branch president, member of a d istrict presiden cy and the stake president of two stakes.
Merlene is survived by five children, Stott Cook, Connie (Charles) Hulm e , Bonieta (Devon) Deppe, Dwight (Barbara) Cook and Carla (Ken) Cox; on e d aughter-in-law, Deena Cook; 34 grandchildren; and 81 great-grandchild ren . Merlene was preceded in death by her husband; one, son Kent; her pa rent s; a sister, Verna; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008 , i n the Logan East Stake Center, 1450 E. 1500 North. A viewing will b e hel d from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2008, at the Allen-Hall Mor tuar y (34 E. Center) and prior to the funeral services from 9:30 to 10:3 0 a.m . at the Logan East Stake Center. Interment will be in the Wasatc h Lawn M emorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive.

I remember by father, Leland M. Bushnell for the hard working man tha t h e was.
My first real recollection was in 1942. We were west of Grampa Bushnell ' s house, cutting hay. I was on the mower at the time. It as drawn b y a te am of horses. I was seven years of age. I couldn't reach the foo t rests . Dad put a board on the back of the rests to put my feet on. Gra mpa Bush nell came down in the field and told dad that I would be kille d if I drov e the mower, but dad said the war is on and there is no help . From that d ay until 1946 when we got our first tractor, I drove the mo wer.
Dad was a fair person, always kept his word. I remember him getting u p a t four o'clock in the morning to milk cows so he could be at a design ate d place at a designated time. He said being on time is a virtue .
It was not until I was sixteen years old, that I remember going any pla c e other than work, with my dad. That was the Deer Hunt. That was our va ca tion, two or three days out of the year.
He provided a good home for us, and taught us to be honest and fair i n o ur dealings. That I will always be thankful for.

Opal Swallow Jones, age 88, peacefully passed away on Sunday, Septembe r 1 1, 2005. The oldest of five children, Opal was born December 21, 191 6 i n Meadow, Utah to Thomas Charles Swallow and Vanda Duncan. Married he r be loved husband of 53 years, A. Lynn Jones, November 28, 1938 in Sal t Lak e City, later solemnized in the Manti Temple July 12, 1963.

Her generosity and love knew no bounds. Her sweet spirit will be dearl y m issed by all who knew her. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ o f Latt er-day Saints, Opal served with unwavering faith and a heart ful l of char ity. Most notable was her service in the Primary, serving eigh t years a s Primary President followed by eight years as Stake Primary Pr esident an d many more years as a teacher, dedicated visiting teacher, an d Relief So ciety President.

She and Lynn served in the Massachusetts Boston Mission 1983-84. Prio r t o her mission, she worked as the manager of the Books and Stationar y Depa rtment at ZCMI Cottonwood.

Opal's greatest mission however, and her life's work was her family. Alw a ys placing her family first, she devoted her life to her children and h e r beloved husband. Few couples ever know the bond of love and deep devo ti on that Opal and Lynn had for each other. Surely it was a glorious reu nio n.

Opal is preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Thera Ross; a n d brother, Chad Swallow. Grover Swallow, 81, of Panaca, Nevada, and formerly of Orem and Provo, U t ah, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, April 22, 2009 at his hom e . A loving and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfat he r, he will be greatly missed by his many descendants and friends.
Grover grew up in Meadow, Utah and graduated from Millard High Schoo l i n Fillmore, Utah, where he excelled in drama and tennis. He attende d Idah o State University where he obtained his B.S. Pharmacy degree (th e Univer sity of Utah didn't have a School of Pharmacy until the followin g year) . During his freshman year at Idaho State he was the 4-miler an d cross-co untry runner on the track team. He was very active in their LD S Institut e where he was Superintendent of the Sunday School and preside nt of the B eta Chapter of Lambda Delta Sigma fraternity.
Grover married Emily Brookie Condie before completing his senior yea r a t Idaho State. Brookie, of Twin Falls, Idaho, was also a pharmacy maj or . They were married in the Manti LDS Temple on September 7, 1948.
Grover worked as a pharmacist in Rupert, Idaho, Smithfield, Utah, and Pr e ston and Montpelier, Idaho, until they bought their first drug store i n P ioche, Nevada, in 1957, and then added a second drug store in Calient e, N evada, in 1958. During this time he was very active in church, commu nity , and Lincoln County (Nevada), serving as chairman of the Rural Are a Deve lopment, later changed to Lincoln Area Development. During this ti me th e Eagle Valley and Echo dams were built in Lincoln County. He was c hairma n of the Nevada State Rural Development. He was a member of the Pi oche Li ons Club and later became president of the Caliente Rotary Club , and the n served as the Rotary International Regional Interact Chairman . The regi on extended south through Las Vegas, half of Los Angeles, an d then to th e Mexican border.
Grover won a seat in the Nevada State Legislature in 1969, representin g L incoln and White Pine counties for four years, where he served as Cha irma n of the Elections and Educational Committees and Vice Chairman of t he He alth and Welfare Committees.
In 1976 Grover purchased a drug store in University Mall in Orem, Utah f r om Walgreens and renamed it Swallows Drugs. They moved to Provo, Utah ( an d then later, Orem), but still kept their store in Caliente. Later the y a dded another store in Layton, Utah. Grover was a former president o f th e University Mall Merchants Association and served as a member of th e Ore m City Council for several years.
After closing Swallows Drugs in Layton, and selling Swallows Drugs in Or e m in 1994, and after all their children were married, Grover and Brook i e returned to Lincoln County, Nevada, and ran their store in Caliente u nt il selling it in 2001 and finally retiring. They built a lovely new re tir ement home in Panaca, which they still own, and where Grover passed a wa y on April 22, 2009.
Grover was an active member of the LDS Church, having served faithfull y i n many callings, including Superintendent of the Uvada (later Enterpr ise , Utah) Stake Sunday School, Uvada Stake High Council, Second Counsel or i n the Uvada Stake Presidency, bishop of the BYU 89th Ward, Second Co unsel or in the Grandview Stake Presidency, BYU 3rd Stake High Council , m ember s hip clerk, High Priests Group Leader, Ward Missionary, and Wa rd Histori an.
Grover is survived by his spouse, E. Brookie Condie Swallow of Panaca, N e vada, and by his 10 children, C. She was the fifth and last child of Thomas Swallow & Vanda Duncan .

She was raised in the small town of Meadow, Utah, as the daughter of a m e rchant and farmer. It was her job to do the dishes and mop the floor s i n addition to tromping the hay. She was always busy throughout the d ay w ith her chores and school work. Then in the evening all the youth s got t ogether at somebody’s home, fixed food, and socialized. This w as the h ighlight of her day.

She was planning on going to on a mission for the Church of Jesus Chri s t of Latter-day Saints, but when it came time for her to go there was n o t enough money to send her. So she went off to college at the Branch A gr icultural College known today as Southern Utah University. She spen t tw o years there and then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she work ed a s a dental assistant.

It was in Salt Lake City where she met and dated my father, Stanford Low e ll Gotchy. They were soon married and had five children: 2 girls a n d 3 boys.

Shirley is grandmother to 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren . S he always had her house full with them as she was always babysittin g or t hey would be there visiting her.

The Ancient Egyptians believed that upon death they would be asked two q u estions and their answers would determine where they would continue the i r journey in the afterlife. The first question was, "Did you bring joy ? " The second was, "Did you find joy?" It is safe to say that Shirley br ou ght and found joy in her posterity. Shirley was a very giving person . I t was often said of her that if you asked her what time it was she w oul d give you Big Ben.

Mother taught us to give service without even thinking twice about it . I t is because of that value, that each of my children also has that a s par t of their character.

Shirley was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints a n d remained active and gave service in the Church all her days. She ma d e sure her children also went to church and was active through their yo ut h.

I remember one time as a stubborn 12-year-old that I did not want to att e nd church and told my mother so. She calmly stated that, “If I wante d t o break the Sabbath by not attending Church that I could really brea k i t by cleaning the whole house and wash all the dishes in the cupboard s b y hand.” Needless to say I was very active in the Church .

There was never any doubt in my mother’s mind whether the Church was tr u e or not. She knew it was true. She did not have any earth-shaking ex pe riences to explain why she knew, she said that she had always known it , a s her testimony had grown as she did .

My mother’s love for the Church was taught to us. She knew the gospel a n d knew what was right. She made sure that we followed the gospel. Sh e a lways knew where we were and what we were doing. She made sure we we re w here we should be, doing what we should be doing. I thank her for t hat!

She put great stock in our getting an education and made sure that we we r e actively engaged in getting one. I believe that mother was proude r o f me, that I was, when I received my PhD in Clinical Psychology. I c an t ruthfully say that it was because of the values that Mother instille d i n us in how to get in and work that got me to that place .

My mother was a wonderful woman. She lived her life with the courage a n d purpose. Despite whatever dreams she may have had for herself and h e r career, she turned her focus to our family. Her family became her li fe . She always sacrificed her own needs for those of our family or love d o nes. She had an incredible spirit who has persevered through everyth ing . We miss her caring spirit and love .

DeLynn V. Labrum, eternal companion to Betty Mae Stott and son of Veno y B . Labrum and Noreen Swallow Labrum passed away peacefully on his birt hday , Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the age of 86. DeLynn was born on Jun e 15 , 1927 in Meadow, Utah. He grew up working alongside his father on t he fa mily farm. His love of farming continued as he worked side-by-sid e with h is children and grandchildren milking cows and raising crops unt il the da y he passed away. DeLynn served from 1946 to 1948 in the Britis h Missio n for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He and hi s wife la ter served together in the Florida Jacksonville Mission from 19 95-1996. T he first time DeLynn saw Betty he told his best friend, “I’m g oing to mar ry that girl someday.” On August 7, 1950, DeLynn and Betty Ma e Stott wer e married in the Manti Temple. One month later he was drafte d into the ar my to fight in the Korean War. He served as a cadreman trai ning other me n at Fort Riley in Kansas and as a corporal in Seoul, Korea . He was honor ably discharged on November 8th, 1952. DeLynn and Betty we re married fo r 62 years and are the parents of 5 children: Jeffery, Dian e, Vickie, Lyn n, and John. They also fostered three children: Lucinda Gu stine, Janet My ers, and Ben Damon. They have 20 grandchildren and 38 gre at-grandchildren . DeLynn was a hard worker and loved to serve others, hi s family foremost . He also served his community as water master, town bo ard member, and ma yor.
