Obituary: Final Rites Held For Maud B. Corry
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon in the Cedar Fifth Wa r d Chapel for Mrs. Maud Bracken Corry, 90, who died December 12th, aft e r a long illness.

Mrs. Corry was born May 16, 1877, at Pine Valley, a daughter of James a n d Marion Whipple Bennett Bracken. On June 24, 1901, she married Moron i Co rry in the St. George LDS Temple, and they have been residents of Ce dar C ity since that. Mr. Corry died June 14, 1948.

Always an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sain t s, she served in many capacities, particularly in the Relief Society, w he re she served as counselor and president and other offices. She was al s o one of the first students at the Branch Normal School after its estab li shment here.

Survivors include the following sons and daughters: Marion Andrew Corr y , Eureka, Calif; Mrs. Gordon (LaPriel) Smith, Cedar City; Mrs. W. A. (E dr ic) Marshall, Provo; Mrs. J. S. (Ruth) Smith, Santa Cruz, Calif; Mrs . C . M. (Beverly) Elliotattle, Wash.; ten grandchildren, 17 great-grandc hldr en, and one brother, Wallace Bracken, Salt Lake City.

The funeral services were conducted by Bishop Max Willis. Speakers wer e P arley Dalley and Charles R. Hunter, with a tribute written by Blanch e Cor ry and read by Fern Hunter.

Invocation was by Don Draper, benediction by Collin Smith and dedicati o n of the grave by Daniel Jones. Prayer at the mortuary prior to the ser vi ces was by Robert Brereton. The musical program included a vocal solo , "T he End of a Pt Day" by Ralph Hafen and a vocal duet by Howard and Or ma Wo od. Burial was in the Cedar City Cemetery.

Leo Herbert, 84, formerly of Blacksburg, Virginia, passed from this li f e at his home in Springville on Saturday, August 10, after a valiant st ru ggle with cancer.

He was born in Douglas, Arizona, on March 7, 1912, to Kumen Onhi and Uri l la Whipple Herbert. He married Ruth Parker on June 30, 1937, in the Sa l t Lake LDS Temple. She died on April 20, 1981. Leo received his bachelo r’ s degree in 1939 from Brigham Young University. He earned an MBA degre e i n 1941 and a Ph.D. in 1944 from Louisiana State University.

He was a Certified Public Accountant in Utah and Louisiana. Dr. Herber t h eld teaching positions at LSU and BYU before becoming department hea d i n business administration at Louisiana Tech in 1948. He was appointe d Ass istant State Auditor of Louisiana in 1952.

In 1956 he moved to Arlington, VA, and was appointed Director, Offic e o f Staff Management at the General Accounting Office in Washington, D . C. , where he was responsible for recruiting and training professiona l accou ntants. Upon his retirement in 1974, Dr. Herbert became a profess or at Vi rginia Tech and a consultant to the Comptroller General of the U .S., an d the United Nations in Gambia and the Philippines.

He has published numerous books and articles on auditing. At the tim e o f his death, he was Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Virginia Tec h an d was writing a personal favorite book on setting and achieving goal s.

He was an active member of the LDS Church serving a mission in Arkansa s a s part of the Central States Mission in the early 1930's. He held num erou s positions throughout his life and was called as Patriarch in 197 8 in Vi rginia. He was a man who believed in the importance of educatio n and prov ided financial support so his children and grandchildren woul d have the o pportunity to attend college. In 1981, the Leo Herbert Accou nting Scholar ship at Virginia Tech was established.

Dr. Herbert is survived by a son and two daughters and their spouses, Fr a nk and Ina Lee Herbert (Draper, UT), Dahnelle and Roger Overly (Springv il le, UT), and Judy Spencer and William Harris (Hyattsville, MD), 10 gra ndc hildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, August 14, at 11 a.m. in the Kolob St a ke Center, 1230 South 500 East. Friends may call at Wheeler Mortuar y , 2 1 1 East 200 South, Springville, Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m., or We dn esday at the church from 10 to 10:45 am. Burial will be in the Springv ill e Evergreen Cemetery.

Salt Lake City, Utah - Cale Whipple returned to his Heavenly Father at t h e age of 82, on May 9, 2014 at 12:14 am, in Salt Lake City, Utah, afte r g oing into a diabetic coma on May 6, 2014. He was born September 23, 1 93 1 in Farmington, New Mexico to William Wilford and Beatrice Thayne Whi ppl e, both of his parents were born in the Mormon Colonies in Colonia Du blan , Chihuahua, Mexico. Cale was the 5th of 6 children. Cale passed pea ceful ly with his immediate family able to share his final hours on thi s earth.



Both of his parents were born in the Mormon Colonies in Colonia Dublan , C hihuahua, Mexico. Cale was the fifth of six children. Both of Cale' s pare nts passed away when he was young, his mother when he was three ye ars ol d in Farmington, New Mexico, and his father, when Cale was thirtee n year s old in Las Vegas, Nevada. After the passing of his father on Chr istma s Day in 1944, Cale spent time with his siblings in both Sacrament o and C arlsbad, California. The siblings were very close and took care o f each o ther all their lives. While living, as a child, in Farmington, N ew Mexico , Cale remembered the love his mother and father had for him, t hat staye d with him all his life. Cale loved traveling with his father w ho was sel ling pots and pans to people on the Native American Reservatio n in New Me xico and Arizona. Cale told great stories of traveling with h is father an d what a fabulous cook his father was and how he shared hi s knowledge an d great food with the people on the reservation. Cale rema rked often of h is fond memories of the beautiful path to their New Mexic o home. His da d gathered colorful rocks from their travels and lined a d irt path with t hem. Cale's widow step grandmother, Orissa Allred Thayn e (Nephi Whork Tha yne's second wife), took an active part in Cale's lif e and was his surrog ate mother after Cale's mother passed. Nephi Whork T hayne passed in 1937 , two years after Cale's mother passed when Cale wa s five years old. Hi s step grandmother's children, the Whipple children , and their dad, Willi am, worked long days in the garden and orchard / f arm to provide food o n the table. The Thayne and Whipple children were v ery close in age. Lloy d Thayne, his uncle, were the same age and was on e of Cale's closest frie nd's through-out his life. Cale lived in Bellflo wer, California, where h e met one of his life-long friends at church, Ja ck Nelson, and they hav e always enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports toge ther. While Cale was liv ing in Bellflower, California, he graduated in 1 949, from Excelsior Hig h School in Norwalk, California.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Cale served in the Central Atlantic Stat e s Mission from 1951 to 1953 for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-d a y Saints. President and Sister Nalder presided over the mission and Ca l e remembered them fondly. He worked at a pipe bending factory for his B is hop, Lou Jones, in Bellflower, California, and worked on the construct io n of Hungry Horse Dam located in Montana for Mr. Simpson from Bellflow er , California, who was the supervisor. Bishop Lou Jones paid for Cale a n d his brother Boyd's tuition in the spring of 1953 to attend Brigham Yo un g University and they took many side jobs to pay for expenses beyond t h e tuition. On June 11, 1953, Cale was drafted into the United States Ar m y during the Korean War (which ended in July 1953). He entered at For t Do uglas, Salt Lake City, Utah, and was sent to Fort Ord, Monterey Bay , Cali fornia for basic training. In January 1954, Cale was assigned to U .S. occ upied Germany. Cale married Marilyn Pearl Daniels on January 4, 1 954, i n the Salt Lake LDS Temple. One week later, he left for Germany an d was a ssigned to be an instructor at the War Dog Training Camp in Lengg ries, Ge rmany, Bavaria. In May 1954, Marilyn was able to travel to Germa ny to liv e off base. Cale and Marilyn enjoyed traveling on short leave s with Alla n and Sandy Hale Dietlein to neighboring areas to enjoy the c ountryside . In the last nine months, they all shared a Bavarian home. Ca le was hono rably discharged from the Army with the Rank of Private Firs t Class in Ap ril 6, 1955, in Fort Hamilton, New York City, and then retu rned to atten d Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. In 1956 to 1957 , taking a brea k from school, they lived in Washington, D.C., to work a t a Hot Shoppes r estaurant for J. Willard Marriott as a Manager. The Mar riott's evolved th e restaurant chain into the now famous Marriott Intern ational. Cale als o held various other jobs in Provo, Utah, at BYU (build ing Smith Fieldhou se), and Mountain States Steel on Geneva Road. Cale gr aduated with a Bach elor Degree with Business Administration from Brigha m Young University i n May 1959. In January 1960, they moved to Hollywood , California, for fiv e years where he worked as Manager Business Service s Department for the L os Angeles Chamber of Commerce. They adopted two-y ear-old twins, Laura an d Larry, in July of 1963; they were sealed to the m in the Los Angeles LD S Temple on January 6, 1965, a day after the adop tion was finalized. The y moved to Glendale, California, for two years; w hile there, he continue d to work for the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerc e until 1967. They move d to Redlands, California, from 1967 to 1972, whe re Cale was the Manage r of the Redlands Chamber of Commerce. Cale and hi s family moved to Provo , Utah, in 1972. He worked with his brother, Verl and, making independen t films and variety shows for television until hi s retirement. During hi s life, Cale always had a special place in his he art for his family and f riends in the Mormon Colonies around Colonia Dub lan, Chihuahua, Mexico, a nd was able to visit multiple times the place t hat his parents and thre e older siblings were born. He always enjoyed sp ending time with his moth er's sister, Aunt Willa and Uncle Albert Wagne r and their families. Cal e always felt blessed to be a member of Churc h of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints; he loved sharing the gospel an d bearing his testimony of Jesu s Christ. Cale has held many positions i n the Church, Young Men President , Priesthood leader, Executive Secretar y, etc. While living in Hollywood , Cale was Second Counselor to Bishop L udwig T. Dethloff. He served on th e Los Angeles Stake High Council wit h one of his good friends. John K. Ca rmack. Attorney Carmack was instrum ental in helping with the adoption o f Cale's children. He was living i n Granger LDS 14th Ward, West Valley, S alt Lake City, Utah at the time o f his passing. In the spring of 1983, Ca le suffered from a Benign Brai n Tumor of the pituitary gland and was abl e to recover fully by having d octors remove the tumor by surgery and subs equent radiation therapy. Cal e had a passion for drawing and he loved sha ring his latest renderings . He filled his walls with his many drawings an d loved sharing his stori es of when he grew up and his adventures in hi s life. Cale was married f or 31 years before their divorce in May 1985, t hey have remained good fr iends for the past 61 years. Cale passed peacefu lly with his immediate f amily able to share his final hours on this earth . At the time of his pa ssing, Cale was living with his brother, Verland , in an apartment togeth er. Cale Whipple returned to his Heavenly Fathe r on May 9, 2014, at 12:1 4 am, in Salt Lake City, Utah, after going int o a diabetic coma on May 6 , 2014. He was 82 years old.

Obituary:
Boyd Vernell Whipple passed away June 30, 2013 in St. George, Utah. He w a s born August 17, 1933 in Farmington, New Mexico to William Wilford Whi pp le and Beatrice Thayne. He was the youngest of 6 children, Walden, LaR ee , Velda, Verland, and Cale.

Boyd's mother passed away when he was two years old, and his brothers a n d sisters worked hard to keep the farm going and to take care of each o th er. His older sister LaRee taught him phonetics and he learned to rea d b y hoarding his older brother's comic books. His best memories of th e far m were his father's roses and his dog, Tatters. He often said tha t he hop ed Tatters would be there to greet him in Heaven.

During the war, his father left the farm and moved to Las Vegas for wor k . Boyd liked to tell stories about riding his bicycle to deliver paper s , and how he would use the money to go to the movies with his brothers , V erland and Cale. His father passed away not long after moving and Boy d wa s left without parents at the age of 10. His older married brother , Walde n, and his married sisters, LaRee and Velda helped to take care o f him, b ut he ended up moving a lot. Since he was large in stature he co uld ge t a man's job, and he would go wherever he could thumb a ride.

Boyd attended several high schools because of his circumstances, but h e w as a good student and a great athlete. He was student body presiden t an d quarterback of his football team. He also excelled at track and ba sketb all. He was being recruited for college football when he sustaine d a spor ts injury that ended his possibilities of a football career an d it also k ept him out of military service.

After graduating from high school, he attended Brigham Young Universit y . He would go to school for as long as his money would last and then he ' d go to work to get enough money for another semester. Despite his chal le nges he also served a religious mission in Uruguay and Paraguay. He ha d b een assigned to Tahiti, but the ships to Tahiti were on strike, so h e wa s reassigned to South America.

During his mission the elders had a basketball team that competed nation a lly, and Boyd was so well known in the country that people would yell o u t his name when they saw him in the streets. A famous doctor offered t o o perate on his knee for free to be associated with Boyd's notoriety. B oy d made life time friends while he served the Lord.

When he returned home, he continued his education at BYU. During one o f h is working periods he was driving through Las Vegas on his way to Lo s Ang eles. He had gassed up the car and with his last nickel he bough t a soda . As he turned to leave, a man bumped into him and spilt the dri nk. Boy d looked up to see who had done this to him, and it was a frien d from th e mission field. The friend talked Boyd into staying in Las Veg as and off ered to help him find work. Little did he know that he would a lso help hi m find the woman that he would be married to for 51 years.

After 10 years of struggling to finish college, Boyd was in the first ge n eration of his family to attend college and receive a bachelors degree . H e moved his family to California where he was hired by the world's la rges t accounting firm. He later went to work for the IRS, in the Hollywo od di vision, where he audited movie stars. He accepted a temporary contr act wi th the State Department and moved his wife, Nola and his children , Lisa a nd Brad to Guatemala. Temporary seldom is, and for 15 years he t raveled t he globe as a U.S. Diplomat. He retired at the age of 51 afte r receivin g accommodations from 4 different Presidents of the United Sta tes for hi s accomplished service to his country.

Boyd always felt that the State Department was just a vehicle for his se r vice to the Lord and the Church. He helped the church grow everywher e h e went. He hesitated to transfer to Kenya because at the time there w as n o Mormon church there, but he went anyway. For many years he preside d ove r family sacrament meetings in his living room, and he eventually w as ins trumental in getting the church started there. He served as the fi rst Bra nch President in Kenya. He had wonderful stories of the faith o f those me mbers. He blessed the first baby that was born into the churc h in Kenya , and a young man that was baptized ended up serving a missio n in Los Ang eles where Boyd was after he retired.

Boyd had a passion for genealogy. He had a theater room filled with char t s and books and documents of his ancestors and family. He is now wher e h e can be with those who passed on before him and be reunited with al l th e ancestors that he knew so well through his study and research. H e was w ell read and could speak in detail on almost any subject. He spok e four l anguages fluently and often read the scriptures in those languag es.

Boyd served the Lord all his life. He not only served a mission in Sou t h America, he was also a Stake missionary, a Lost Sheep missionary, a n d a Spanish speaking Service missionary in St. George. He served as a B is hop in Guatemala and in the Mission Presidency in Colombia.

Boyd passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on June 30, 2013. He had ju s t celebrated his 51st wedding anniversary, his 50th Father's Day, an d h e was only a few weeks away from his 80th birthday.

Boyd started out in humble beginnings, and was not deterred by his hards h ips and struggles as he built his life into a full and interesting mort a l experience. He was survived by his wife, his two children, and four g ra ndchildren. He will be missed for his kindness and generosity.
Interment was in the Tonaquint Cemetery, Friday, July 5, 2013.

Lucile was the 6th of 11 children. Doing hard wor k wa s part of her upbringing. Lucile was exposed to rural and farm life , wher e she learned to grow and harvest crops, milk cows and feed chicke ns. He r love for growing flowers (particularly roses), and fruits and ve getable s originated in the hard labor performed in her youth.
Lucile was also exposed to good literature, music, writing, sewing and p u blic speaking, all of which she became proficient in .
Lucile married Lewis T. Williams on September 3, 1948 in Salt Lake Cit y . Three children were born to that union: Lewis Keith, who went by Keit h , Russell Gardner and Lucile Marie, who went by Marie. Seventeen year s af ter their civil marriage, Lew and Lucile were sealed to each other a lon g with their children in the Salt Lake Temple.
in 1926, they bought a home at 703 6th Avenue where they lived for 50 ye a rs. Lucile was heavily involved in her children's lives, teaching and h el ping them with their development. She also taught them in Primary onc e pe r week after school. Lucile was also involved in her children's scho ols , serving as a PTA room mother and as PTA president .
Lucile played the piano and instilled in her children a love for music S h e was instrumental in Keith learning to play the trumpet and Russ and M ar ie playing the violin. They were faithfully taken to music lessons an d re quired to practice their instruments.
Lucile served in many church callings; a Relief Society presidency, as S p iritual Living teacher - teaching carefully and prayerfully prepared le ss ons, and on the Stake Sunday School board where she influenced many wh o w ere trying to improve their teaching skills .
As her sons matured, Lucile saw Keith leave home to serve in the Air For c e during World War II. This caused some anxiety for her, as his unit h a d the assignment to patrol the skies for enemy aircraft near Labrado r o n the Canadian East coast. Later she also sent her two sons on missio ns : Keith to the Eastern States mission in 1947 and Russ to the New Engl an d mission in 1948.
The most heart wrenching and devastating experience of her motherhood w a s losing Marie on February 24, 1948 to a rare form of meningitis. Mari e h ad become violently ill and had died within four days. As difficult a s th is was to bury her own daughter, Lucile still lived a productive lif e aft erwards, especially in serving others. But, she anguished in her ow n priv ate way. She never changed things in Marie's room, leaving all o f her bel ongings the way that they were at the time of her death.
Lucile received the Honorary Golden Gleaner Award a few years followin g M arie's death, because of her devotion to many young women, especiall y th e friends of her cherished daughter. Lucile gave counsel and directi on t o the young women and there developed a strong bond of genuine lov e for e ach other.
Lucile's service went beyond church callings. She devoted her talent s t o several organizations. Along with her PTA service, Lucile served o n th e Salt Lake PTA council. She was also a member of the Salt Lake Coun ty o f Women. She had a deep and abiding regard for improving the communi ty an d fostering programs that helped to bring this about .
She was also a member and officer in the local Daughter of the Utah Pion e ers chapter, as well as heavily involved in the Salt Lake County Boar d o f DUP and Central Board. She was a great organizer, problem solver, a nd v ery compassionate in her service.
In her early 70s, Lucile fought a valiant and courageous battle with can c er. A large tumor was found in her stomach, and although it was remove d , the cancer had already spread to other parts of her body. She receiv e d much care from loved ones to make her comfortable, since further medi ca l care was deemed to be fruitless. On September 23, 1975, Lucile passe d a way. Witnesses recalled that, in her final moments, she spoke the wor ds , "Marie, Marie". It was apparent that the Lord had allowed Marie's sp iri t to accompany her mother to the spirit world. Obituary:
Franklin Wayne Herbert, age 74, of Gilbert Arizona returned to his Heave n ly Father on January 16, 2013. In his final hours, he was surrounded b y h is children, which was a tender mercy of the Lord and something he al way s desired.

Frank was born in El Dorado Arkansas to Leo Herbert and Ruth Parker Herb e rt on July 13, 1938. He married his sweetheart Inalee Cook Herbert on J un e 23, 1966 in the Salt Lake Temple. He was an active member of the Chu rc h of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many capacit ie s including; bishop, seminary teacher, missionary and temple worker. H e w as a former BYU athlete and coach.

He loved his Savior and his family. He was a great example to all thos e a round him. He loved having gospel conversations and playing or watchi ng s ports. He was a Devoted BYU Fan. Go Cougars!! His greatest joys wer e fro m loving his wife, children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his seven children and their spouses: Dave and (Jenife r ) Herbert, Kim and (Ty) Detmer, Misty and (Jeff) Trendler, Mike and (Ni co le) Herbert, Stacie and (Chad) Mahoney, Lisa and (Todd) Cooley, Rich a n d (Lacee) Herbert, 25 grandchildren and his sister Dahnelle Overly. H e wa s preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three grandchildren, a n d a sister Judy Spencer.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday January 22, 201 3 , in the Mount Mahogany Stake Center, 1548 North 900 West Pleasant Grov e , Utah 84062. St. George, UT, Maxine Carter Freeman passed away in her sleep Saturd a y , November 12, 2011, in St. George, UT. She was born August 11, 192 4 , i n St. George, UT to Donald and LaPrele Carter. Maxine was marri e d t o Ma x Gentry, also of St. George, who preceded her in death in 197 7 . Sh e late r married Gene Freeman of Idaho, also preceding her in dea t h in 19 96.

Maxine raised and is survived by her two beautiful and talented girl s , J o lene (Kent) Rex of Chicago, Illinois and Janis Goates (Hal) of Sa l t La k e City, Utah. Her girls were the pride and joy of her life and s h e alwa y s wanted to know where they were and how they were doing. A ve r y socia l a nd loving person, Maxine found it easy to make and keep fri en ds, a ra re t alent these days. Maxine was a loving Mother, Grandmothe r , and Grea t Gran dmother. She always lent a listening ear and found ti m e to be by a nybody’ s side who needed her help.
