    Notes:

    FLORA CALL DISNEY ~
was the wife of Elias Charles Disney. She is the mother of Walt Disney , ( Walter Elias Disney). Her other children were Herbert Arthur Disney , Raym ond Arnold Disney, Roy Oliver Disney and Ruth Flora Disney .

Elias Charles Disney and his wife Flora Call Disney are entombed withi n t he Great Mausoleum in the Sanctuary of Truth in Forest Lawn Memorial- Par k in Glendale, California.

Walt Disney and his family are remembered in a beautiful private garde n i n another location in this same Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale , Ca lifornia. Other family is in Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale a nd th e Hollywood Hills.

Flora was born in Steuben, Ohio, the daughter of Henrietta (née Gross) ( 1 837–1910) and Charles Call (1823–1890), who were neighbors of Kepple El ia s Disney and Mary Disney, parents of Elias Charles Disney, her husband . S he was of German and English descent .

She was a devoted and loving wife to Elias Charles and she raised thei r c hildren affirming the strict Christian values she and Elias wanted t o ins till in each one of their children.

The many moves Elias often needed to make were accepted by Flora becau s e she believed each move was intended to make their family closer and h op efully more financially sound, and she wanted their children to experi enc e other regions of the country. Flora fortunately was a very calm pre senc e to Elias and each one of their children.

It was Flora who seemed to temper the strict and rigid disposition of El i as and she calmed him when he did seem less tolerable when he was fraug h t with disciplinary actions with their children. To be certain, Elias l ov ed his family and he was likely under pressure due to financial proble ms ! Flora really enjoyed reading stories daily and even often playing ga me s with their children.

In Marceline, Missouri, when the Disney Family owned a small farm, Flo r a always made certain the children had good meals, warm clothes in th e co lder months, and that they spent time outside playing and learning a bou t the various farm animals on their farm. Walt was first exposed to a ll s orts of farm animals that most likely ingrained in his heart his dee p lov e for animals as he would later portray in so many of his beloved a nimate d and true-life films! In later years Walt would often reminiscenc e abou t the good times on the farm in Marceline and about the many anima ls he l oved and that his parents wanted him to respect and to enjoy an d to love !

It was in Marceline when Elias bought Flora her first sewing machine. S h e was quite a seamstress and she made most of the clothes for the child re n. She liked red and blue threads and used a lot of these colors on he r n ew leg-powered sewing machine!

When the Disney's lived in Kansas City, Missouri, Flora always made su r e each child had a good sack lunch for school and when Walt and Roy del iv ered newspapers for Elias early each morning and again after school, F lor a saw to it that the boys were dressed properly with extra layers o f clot hes in the cold bitter winters and that they had good food to eat.

Flora always did her best to see that the children knew that their birth d ays were special even though it was seldom an experience for Flora t o b e able to have enough eggs to bake cakes. She would spread "extra but ter " on a fresh slice of home baked bread and make this a special gift f or e ach one of their birthdays.

She and Elias were quite happy when the family moved to Kansas City. S h e encouraged each of their children to be excited about each new day a n d to dream about the future. Flora felt things were more stable for he r f amily in Kansas City as they were all working!

Sons Raymond Arnold Disney and Roy Oliver Disney were bank tellers at t h e First National Bank in downtown Kansas City, Missouri at the same ti m e Walt opened his first animation studio he called Laugh-O-gram Studi o lo cated at 31st and Forest Avenue. This original building remains toda y, al beit in disrepair, and hopefully will be fully restored! A most con certe d effort is in place to renew this building !

Raymond Arnold Disney's son who is Charles Elias Disney was named afte r h is grandfather Elias Charles Disney. Elias only saw Charles Elias fo r a s hort time before he passed away on his grandsons first birthday o n Septem ber 13, 1941.

After several years in Kansas City, Flora and Elias moved to Oregon t o b e with their son Herbert Arthur Disney and his family, and then the y move d to California at the insistence of Walt and Roy.

After the success of their milestone feature animated film "Snow White a n d the Seven Dwarfs" in 1938, Walt and Roy presented their parents wi t h a new home in North Hollywood, near the Disney studios in Burbank, Ca li fornia. Less than a month after moving in, Flora complained to Walt an d R oy of problems with the gas furnace in her new home. Studio repairme n wer e sent to the house twice, but the problem was obviously not adequa tely f ixed. Flora wrote a letter to her daughter Ruth describing their w onderfu l new home, the beautiful California weather, and how very happ y she an d Elias were to be close to Walt and Roy, but again complainin g of the fu mes from the furnace.

Flora passed from this life on Saturday, November 26, 1938 (two days aft e r Thanksgiving) as the result of asphyxiation caused by the fumes. On T ha nksgiving day Flora and Elias had enjoyed a lovely dinner with Walt an d L illian and Roy and Edna in Walt's home. The loss of his Mother plague d Wa lt Disney with much deep grief for the rest of his life. Walt felt p erson ally responsible for the furnace not being repaired properly. It wa s Ro y Oliver Disney who comforted and reassured both Walt and Elias an d the r est of the family that "the tragic and very sad loss of Flora wa s no one' s fault!"

Walt and his siblings thought about their beloved Mother for the res t o f their lives! Flora was a woman of strong Christian character and he r fa mily was everything to her. And she was everything to them!

"May Flora Call Disney Rest In Peace." Amen.

Flora married Elias Charles Disney on 1 Jan 1888 in Kismet, Lake, Florida, United States. Elias (son of Kepple Elias Disney and Mary Jane Richardson) was born on 6 Feb 1859 in Bluevale, Morris-Turnberry, Huron, Ontario, Canada; died on 13 Sep 1941 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States; was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles, California, United States. The family delive red the m orning newspaper, The Kansas City Times, to approximately 700 c ustomers , and The Kansas City Star to more than 600 customers. The numbe r of cust omers served increased with time.

Roy graduated from the Manual Training High School of Kansas City in 191 2 . He left the paper delivery route and worked on a farm in the summer . H e was then employed as a bank clerk along with his brother, Raymond A rnol d Disney at the First National Bank in downtown Kansas City. Whilst Walt led the creative side, Roy guided the business side and fina n ces. Roy and Walt both founded Disney Bros. Studios as brothers, but Wa l t would later buyout most of Roy's share in 1929 so, unlike Max and Da v e Fleischer of rival Fleischer Studios, Roy was not a co-producer .

However, Roy would be an equal partner in all facets of the production c o mpany and he became the company's first CEO in 1929, although the offic ia l title was not given to him until 1968. He also shared the role of Ch air man of the Board with Walt from 1945. In 1960, Walt dropped the Chair ma n title so he could focus more on the creative aspects of the compan y .

Following Walt's death in 1966, Roy postponed his retirement to overse e c onstruction of what was then known as Disney World. He later rename d th e park "Walt Disney World" as a tribute to his brother. Roy became t he pr esident of Walt Disney Productions headquartered in Burbank, Califo rnia o n December 15, 1966, until 1968.

Roy Oliver Disney was married to Edna Francis from April 1925 until hi s d eath. Their only child, Roy Edward Disney, was born on January 10, 19 30 . Throughout his life, Roy rejected the publicity and fame that came w it h being Walt's brother. Roy's nephew who is Charles Elias Disney name d hi s sons middle name Charles Roy Disney after Roy.

After the opening of Walt Disney World in October 1971, Roy finally reti r ed. He passed away, on December 20, 1971, age 78, from an intracrania l he morrhage. He is interred in Forest Lawn Memorial-Park (Hollywood Hil ls) i n Los Angeles alongside his wife Edna Disney .
