Spencer Woolley Kimball (March 28, 1895 – November 5, 1985) was an Ameri c an business, civic, and religious leader, and was the twelfth presiden t o f The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The g rand son of early Latter-day Saint apostle Heber C. Kimball, Kimball wa s bor n in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory. He spent most of his early lif e in T hatcher, Arizona, where his father, Andrew Kimball, farmed and ser ved a s the area's stake president. He served an LDS mission from 1914 t o 1916, [where?] then worked for various banks in Arizona's Gila Valley a s a cler k and bank teller. Kimball later co-founded a business, sellin g bonds an d insurance that, after weathering the Great Depression, becam e highly su ccessful. Kimball served as a stake president in his hometow n from 1938 u ntil 1943, when he was called to serve as a member of the Q uorum of the T welve Apostles.

Like most other LDS Church apostles, Kimball traveled extensively to ful f ill a wide variety of administrative and ecclesiastical duties. Earl y i n his time as an apostle, Kimball was directed by church president Ge org e Albert Smith to spend extra time in religious and humanitarian wor k wit h Native Americans, which Kimball did throughout his life. He initi ated t he Indian Placement Program, which helped many Native American stu dents g ain education in the 1960s and 1970s while they stayed with LDS f oster fa milies.

In late 1973, following the sudden death of church president Harold B. L e e, Kimball became the twelfth president of the LDS Church, a positio n h e held until his death in 1985. Kimball's presidency was noted for th e 19 78 announcement ending the restriction on church members of black Af rica n descent being ordained to the priesthood or receiving temple ordin ances . Kimball's presidency saw large growth in the LDS Church, both i n term s of membership and the number of temples. Kimball was the first c hurch p resident to state publicly that the church expects all able-bodie d male m embers to serve missions in young adulthood, resulting in an inc rease i n missionary service.

Spencer LeVan Kimball, legal scholar, insurance lawyer, law professor, h u sband and father, was born in Thatcher on Aug. 26, 1918. He died on Oc t . 26, 2003.

He was the son of Spencer Wooley and Camilla (Eyring). On June 12, 193 9 , he married Kathryn Ann Murphy. They had six children: Barbara Jean (T ho mas L. Sherman), Judith Ann (William Stillion), Kathleen Louise (Ken S iro tnik), Spencer David (Haila), Kent Douglas (Mary), Timothy Jay (Karen ); 1 6 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. After 51 years of marr iage , Kathryn died in 1990.

Kimball married Virginia Barrus Johnson on June 4, 1994, and added two m o re children to his family: Linda (Keith Morgan), Rick Davis (Debbie); s ev en more grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He received a bach elo r’s of science degree from the University of Arizona. Spencer serve d in W orld War II as a lieutenant aboard the U.S.S. Franklin. Followin g the wa r he spent two years at Lincoln College in Oxford, England, a s a Rhodes S cholar, where he earned a BCL. He later received an SJD fro m the Universi ty of Utah Law School. At 35 years old he was the younges t dean of the Un iversity of Utah Law School. Kimball served as a law pro fessor and direct or of legal research at the University of Michigan. Fro m there he went t o the University of Wisconsin as dean of the Law School . Kimball becam e a law professor at the University of Chicago as well a s the executive d irector of the American Bar Association Foundation in C hicago.

He retired to Salt Lake to live by the mountains and next to his siblin g s after he lost his wife, Kathryn.

Kimball made many notable contributions to the field of law during his l i fetime and was recognized both nationally and internationally for hi s w o r k. He was director of the Wisconsin Statutes Revision Project an d his w ork remains a model for insurance codes to this day. Kimball wa s one of t he co-founders of AIDA, an international insurance law associa tion. He wa s also the author of many works on insurance law and regulati on.

Surviving are brothers and sister, Olive Beth Mack, Andrew and Phyllis K i mball and Edward and Bee Kimball.

Olive Beth Kimball Mack died Friday, September 14, 2018 from the natur a l affects caused by ninety-six years of an amazingly full and abundan t li fe. Her mortal journey started in Safford, Arizona on July 31, 1922 . "Bo bby," as she was called by her family and friends, was the second o f fou r children and the only daughter of Spencer W. and Camilla Eyring K imball . Her life was full of adventure, laughter, service, love, and ded icatio n to her family, friends, church, and the Savior that she loved s o much .
She was married to Grant Miller Mack in the Salt Lake Temple of The Chur c h of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on December 6, 1943. They were b le ssed with seven children. Her love for people was demonstrated in th e ni neteen years she served as an elementary school teacher. She also en joye d twenty-two years singing and traveling the world as an alto in th e Morm on Tabernacle Choir. She was a devoted wife, and raised and influe nced th ree generations of grateful descendants. Bobby was known for he r friendl iness, generosity, patience, and compassion. She loved partie s and entert aining. She had talent for music, sewing, and a remarkable a bility to eff iciently prepare wonderful meals for large gatherings. Late r in life, sh e developed a love for oil painting and her artwork grace s the homes of e ach of her children and grandchildren. She is precede d in death by her p arents, husband, and brothers, Spencer Levan Kimbal l and Edward L. Kimbal l. Survivors include her brother, Andrew (Phyllis ) Kimball; seven childre n, Miriam (Lynn) Richins, Randall (Patricia) Mac k, Stephen (Rosita) Mack , William (Sandra) Mack, Spencer (Jane) Mack, Th omas (Allison) Mack, an d Camilla (Steve) Conaway; and 192 grandchildre n and great-grandchildren . Maurine Jackson McLean passed away March 28, 2014 at the age of 93, in S a lt Lake City, Utah, of CML and causes incident to age.

Maurine was born January 14, 1921, number 8 of 12 children of S. Andre w a nd Iretta Woolley Jackson, in Salt Lake City, UT. She graduated fro m Eas t High School, attended the University of Utah and graduated from t he LD S Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1942. She mar ried G ilbert John McLean October 29, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Maurine was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-d a y Saints and held many teaching and leadership positions. She was als o ac tive in the PTA and was awarded an Honorary Life-Time Membership. Sh e wa s a volunteer disaster nurse with the American Red Cross. Along wit h he r husband and six sons, she was involved in the Scouting Program. Sh e wa s a registered scouter for 45 years, received the Red Butte Distric t Awar d of Merit and the Silver Fawn Award. She loved life and enjoyed h er brot hers and sisters, her husband and their nine children, hot bath s and choc olate.

Maurine is survived by her children: Kathleen (Dennis) Judd, Marilyn, Ro s emary (Duane) Swapp, Powell (Lorraine), John (Leslie), David (Stacey Jo ) , Douglas (Jandeen) and Steven (Diane); 25 grandchildren and 28 great-g ra ndchildren; sisters Laura Kunz and Esther (Earl) Wallace. Preceded i n dea th by her parents, husband Gilbert, son Mark (Claire), and 4 grandc hildre n.

Laura Jackson Kunz, 92, passed away on September 12, 2014 in Salt Lake C i ty of causes incident to age.

She was born in Salt Lake City on September 7, 1922 to Samuel Andrew a n d Annie Iretta Woolley Jackson. She was the eleventh of twelve children .

Laura was raised in the Salt Lake Valley, graduating from East High Scho o l, and received her nurses' training at the LDS Hospital, University o f U tah Nursing Program in Salt Lake City.

She married Kenneth K. Kunz on October 5, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temp l e. The officiator was Harold B. Lee. In 2012, Kenneth and Laura celebra te d their seventieth wedding anniversary together and Kenneth passed awa y s hortly thereafter. Together, they raised their family of nine childre n be ginning in Southern California. In 1944, they moved to Salt Lake Cit y, wh ere they lived in the Tenth Ward and then the Yale Ward.

Laura was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da y S aints and held many teaching and leadership positions in the Relief S ocie ty and also the Cub Scout program. She served with great love and ki ndnes s.

As she raised her nine children, there was always fresh baked bread an d c innamon rolls in the oven. Every fall, she would can peaches, pears , apri cots, and tomatoes by the bushel. She was an accomplished seamstre ss an d loved to quilt and sew temple clothing and quilts for friends an d famil y members.

She was an active member of the International Society of Daughters of Ut a h Pioneers. She enjoyed participating in the ISDUP functions and was ho no red to have that be a part of her heritage.

Laura leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, sacrifice, and love.

Laura loved the Lord, her husband, and her family. She appreciated lif e a nd was privileged to experience the joy of hard work and accomplishme nt . She gave each of her children the gift of music as well as teachin g the m to value education. Her legacy has been given to her children, gr andchi ldren, and great-grandchildren. She instilled in their souls the i mportan ce of the words 'Carry On.'

We honor and love you cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmo t her, and friend and we will Carry On.

Laura is survived by her nine children, fifty-three grandchildren, and 1 0 9 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 11: 0 0 a.m. in the Yale Ward Chapel, 1431 East Gilmer Drive, Salt Lake City , w ith a viewing prior to the services from 10:00-10:45 a.m.

Mark Jackson McLean, son, brother, husband, and father passed away at ho m e on September 8, 1998 from complications of diabetes. He was born Febr ua ry 26, 1951 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mark was a graduate of South Hig h Sc hool in 1969. As a faithful member of the LDS Church he served in th e Cal ifornia Central Mission and many other callings.

Mark is survived by his wife, Claire; four children, Janet, Marci, Kev i n and James; his parents Gilbert and Maurine McLean; three sisters an d fi ve brothers.

Obituary:

Clyde Kunz, 77, passed from this life into the arms of his Heavenly Fath e r on June 29, 2021 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was b or n September 25, 1943, in Los Angeles, CA to Kenneth Keith Kunz and Lau r a Jackson Kunz, where his father was serving as a U.S. Army Soldier i n Wo rld War II. Following the War, the family returned to Salt Lake City , whe re Clyde was raised with 8 younger siblings; Keith, Dwight, Callee n (Mart indale), Garth, Janna, Brenda (Canevari), Lorraine (Davis) and Ma rnae (Ha mmond). He grew up in the Salt Lake Valley and attended the LD S 10th Ward , serving as Ward Organist at the age of 17.

Always a leader, Clyde was elected student body president of Bryant Jr . H igh, and graduated with honors from East High School in 1961. He fulf ille d his military obligation in the Utah National Guard, playing frenc h hor n in the 23rd Army Band.

In 1962, Clyde was called as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Chri s t of Latter-day Saints and served in the West German Mission for 2 ½ ye ar s. In the summer of 1967, Clyde met the love of his life, Claudia Burt on . They were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Templ e o n December 15, 1967. Thereafter, they were joined by four sons an d a daug hter; Brandon, Ryan, Jennifer, Justin and Jared.

After earning his BS degree in Accounting and an MBA from the Universi t y of Utah, in 1969, Clyde joined the IBM Corporation and began his care e r in Idaho. Then, with promotions, he took his family to Atlanta, Georg ia , Denver, Colorado, and finally, Bountiful, Utah. In 1985, Clyde becam e V ice President of Sales and Marketing at Integrated Systems Engineerin g i n Logan, Utah. In 1988, Clyde joined the Harris Corporation as a Seni or A ccount Manager in Salt Lake City, and was later transferred to Seatt le, W ashington, as a Senior Accounts Manager for the Boeing account, an d the n Regional Manager for a division of the Harris Corporation, Concur rent C omputer Corporation. In 2006, Clyde and Claudia returned to Utah a nd sett led in West Jordan, where Clyde entered the health insurance indu stry, pr imarily working with Medicare recipients. He worked in that fiel d until 2 021, building his own business and serving over 900 clients.

Clyde has been a faithful follower of Jesus Christ throughout his life , a nd has served in many church callings, from Scoutmaster to Bishop. Bu t hi s most important and successful callings have been as a husband, fat her a nd grandfather, setting an example of love, faith, generosity and s ervic e for his posterity.

Clyde is survived by Claudia Burton Kunz, his wife of 53 years, his chil d ren, Brandon (Rebecca), Ryan (Kim), Jennifer Hoisington (Matt), Justi n (H eidi) and Jared (Holly). He is preceded in death by his parents an d his b rother Garth. He is also survived by his 17 grandchildren (Jordan , Audrey , Allison, Ashley, Joshua, Ethan, Sydney, Lauren, Caleb, Isabell a, Elliot , Bryson, Olivia, Eliza, Abbey, Braden and Tanner) who look t o him as a l oving example of a life well-lived. We will all miss him!

Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held at 11 am on Fri d ay, July 2, 2021 at the Westland 1st Ward Building at 7645 South 3200 W es t, West Jordan, Utah. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 1, 202 1 , from 6:00 to 8:00 in the evening at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 100 7 W . South Jordan Parkway (10600 South), South Jordan, UT, and at the Wa rd B uilding one hour prior to the services.

Interment will be in the Murray City Cemetery, 5600 S Vine Street.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the doctors and staf f a t the Jon Huntsman Cancer Center (South) and to the Intermountain Hos pic e nurses and doctors who have lovingly cared for Clyde.

In lieu of flowers, Clyde’s family suggests that donations be made to t h e LDS Church Missionary Program or the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
