Mary Johnson was born May 6, 1801 in Washington County, Pennsylvania: t h e daughter of Samuel Johnson and Elizabeth Huntsman. While yet a child , s he went with her parents to the “virgin” Ohio Valley where she met he r fu ture husband James Huntsman. In 1822 they were married and lived i n Richl and County near their parents as they began to raise their family .
In the fall of 1833, the Mormon missionaries began preaching in Richla n d County and James and Mary were among the first members of the Churc h o f Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is presumed that Mary’s mothe r wa s also baptized. They sold their comfortable home and huge farm to b e nea r the Saints and were among those who were in Jackson County. The y were p resent in the bloody slaughter at Haun’s Mill, where their broth er-in law , Jacob Potts was killed; a victim to the ruthless mob .
Faith and Peace was again found in the city of Nauvoo. They were clos e t o the Prophet Joseph Smith. From Joseph’s own journal is found this e ntry : “October 7, 1842; This day teachers for the school of the prophet s me t and organized in Nauvoo, Illinois, with Elish Averett, President ; Jame s Huntsman, First Counselor; James Hendricks, Second Counselor.” T hey wer e active in the building of the Temple and when it was complete d were amo ng those who did work for the dead.
A short time before the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith, James to o k his youngest son Peter to the Temple and the child was afraid of th e ox en. The Prophet lifted the child up so that he could touch one of th e oxe n and explained to the boy that they were not real .
If their testimonies had not been tested and tired, once again they we r e without a home as they watched their beautiful city burn under the ha nd s of a mob. The Huntsman’s were resettled in Council Bluffs with the r ema ining faithful Saints. It was their on July 17, 1846 at Pleasant Morn ing , Camp Israel, Council Bluffs that quote:” President Brigham Young se lect ed the brethren to act as Bishops; James Huntsman and others.” He i s reco rded as being a man of great means and generosity when called upon .” Some time after their baptism James was called to serve a mission in T ennessee , leaving his wife to raise the family in Richland County.
The family crossed the plains with the early Saints and lived in Salt La k e City, Utah Territory for one year before heading south to Fillmore i n O ctober 1852. They took up residence in an old fort once used to prote ct t he settlers from warring Indians. Time passed and James Huntsman bui l t a brick home which stands today at what is known as 150 West Center S tr eet. It was here that they farmed and raised cattle to make a living.
Brigham Young visited James Huntsman and family often, both in Salt La k e City and Fillmore, Utah. James was only married once, but his brothe r s journals indicated that he would have taken on more wives as was th e cu stom, but his wife forbade it.
On one occasion Brigham Young visited James and suggested that he migh t t ake on another family since her able to financially. James told Presi den t young he was willing if he could persuade is wife Mary to go for it . Pr esident Young preceded in the home as directly asked Mary is she wou ld pe rmit James to take another wife. She was drinking coffee at the tim e an d threw it in President Young’s face. President Young headed out th e doo r and to his horse drawn buggy saying to James, never mind you hav e all t he wife you can handle. Mary left to California with a few child ren afte r she became a widow and she followed her children seeking gol d in Califo rnia. She died August 15, 1895 in Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obi spo County , California.

Isaiah Huntsman Sr (James, James, James, John). was born 1826 i n P erry, Ohio. He died 1878 in Annabella, Severe, Utah. He married 1) R ebec ca Carter Ames in 1849 and to this union was born twelve children . Rebec ca Carter Ames was born in 1830 in Moore’s, New York and died 19 15 in Mo ab, Utah. Her parents joined the church in 1832 and traveled t o Kirklan d in 1834, 1836 in Jackson Co., Missouri and moved to Far Wes t Missouri i n 1838. .Isaiah married 2) 1856 Emma Melissa King, 3) 186 8 Sophia Egbert ; 4) 1869 Seviah Cunningham.
Isaiah was but four years old when the new and sweeping religion ca m e into existence. Soon after his parents came in contact with its teac hi ng, they accepted and was baptized. James. Mary, and family moved t o La ke co., Ohio (Kirkland.) Latter as a result of much dissent of thei r nei ghbors, The decision was made to move to Jackson co.,Missouri. Th e Hunts man family was in Jackson county in 1837. In 1838 Peter was bor n (chil d 9) In 1839 Isaiah was baptized, age 13. In 1842 the Huntsman f amily wa s in Nauvoo.Again Persecution raised its ugly head, the prophe t Joseph an d his brother Hyrum was martyed. Brigham Young became the n ext prophe t and plans were made to go West. In 1846 the call was mad e by the Unit ed States government for 500 men to join the Morman Batalli on to fight i n the Mexican American War. Isaiah Huntsman at age 20 join ed. He was pla ced in company B.
In 1847 Isaiah was released from the batallion in California, a n d he along with others of his buddies, wended their way from Californ i a to the great Salt Lake Valley. They wandered off the trail and foun d th emselves in what is now Millard Co., Isaiah was so impressed with t he be auty and possibilites of the valley that he vowed that he would bui ld a h ome there. ...... .... . . When t hey reached Salt Lake valley , Isaiah found his family had no t arrived y et. He and the other members of the battalion organized a wa gon train an d made several trips to Council Bluffs,Iowa .
Just when and where Isaiah and Rebecca Carter Ames met is not know n ; but Rebecca's father Ira V. Ames was also an early convert to the Mor ma n faith and was driven by the mob to the body of the church.Accordin g t o Ames family history, Rebecca's mother Charity Carter Ames died in 1 83 9 because of the hardships and several trials of the mind and the sc ene s she passed through in the mobbing of Far West. The marriage of Isai ah H untsman and Rebecca Ames is recorded in of Pottawatomie County. o n the 1 6 January 1849 of Isaiah Huntsman of Council Bluffs and Rebecca C arter Am es of Springtown of Pottawatomie county . They resided in Counci l Bluff s and Ezra,their first son was born 12 Nov. 1849. They made thei r home t here until 1852 when Brigham Young sent a letter to the saints i n Iowa, s aying if they wanted to be counted among the saints of Zion ,th ey would s ell their homes and property and move to the rocky mountains.
“Isaiah and Rebecca crossed the plains in the 5th company of Ez r a T. Bensen train. The group left Kanesville, Iowa on 4 July 1849, an d a rrived in great Salt Lake Valley on 27 Oct 1849. The company consist ed o f 447 persons and 120 wagons. The wagons was heavily loaded with f amili es, provisions, merchandise, household goods, farming and merchandi se too ls. The trip over one thousand miles consisted of the ordinary pro blems e ncountered by all the migrating groups little sickness on the rou te, thou gh they encountered heat, cold, rain and snow. In one snowstorm , snow fel l 18 inches deep at Willow Creek and the company lost 62 hea d of cattle , some pigs, and chickens froze to death.” The Huntsman Herit age by Elain e Jutesen. Once in the Salt Lake Valley, they settled Mill c reek.
They arrived in Salt Lake City in 1851 and settled in South Salt Lak e , Milcreek. Late in October in 1851 two long companies set out to Fill mo re to start a settlement. The following year 1852 many more familie s arr ived in Fillmore to settle including the Isaiah Huntsman family. I saia h could not forget the bueatiful valley of Millard county and in th e spri ng of 1854 moved his family Fillmore. Here he took up agricultur e in a s mall scale and followed the task of blacksmith.
The settlers decided to dig a ditch to carry water to the fields we s t of the town. Isaiah and Wesley Dane invented a two way plough that w a s used to dig the ditch. It threw the dirt both ways and was a real he lp . Isaiah was called to Cache valley in 1864/65 and lived their six yea rs . Isaiah entered of pleural marriage in 1856 taking a second wife--Em m a Malisssa King. To this union was born seven children. Rebecca and M el issa worked well together....Isaiah and a Morman Batallio n friend Rob ert C Egbert made an agreement with each other that if one o r the othe r died the other would care for the orphaned family Following t he deat h of Robert Egbert Isaiah in 1868 married the widow Seviah Cunn ingha m Egbert, and took the children to raise.To this union was born on e chil d. Serviarah was supposedly a sickly woman and demanded a great d eal o f the two women. After she claimed to be sick and the others comple te d her work only to find she had faked the illness. A bill of divorceme n t was obtained , Seiviah returned to Salt Lake City and latter remarie d . Harmony returned to the household and they moved to Annabella, Sevia h , Utah. .
In Isaiah 27 years in Utah, he built 14 homes for his family, an d h e did much to build up the communities he called home. He fought i n th e Utah indian wars , helped the wilderness and and left an honorabl e heri tage. He died in his home in Annabella and was buried next to hi s fathe r in Fillmore. Rebecca eventually moved in with one of her son s in Moab , Utah where she died.

At his residence in Annabella, Seviere, Utah on the third day of Ju n e A.D. 1878, of consumption–after a long and severe illness-Isaiah Hun ts man, son of James and Mary Johnston Huntsman . He was born near Belle vue , Richland county, Ohio, September 14th,1826. In company with his fa ther s family passed through all the trials, mobbings, and final expulsio n o f the saints from Missouri and Illinois. And on the call for men b y th e United States government , enlisted in the Mormon Battalion, Jul y 16th, 1846; experienced the untold hardships of that unparalleled campa ign acro ss the continent with that party of brave men to lower Californi a, wher e he was discharged on July 16th, 1847; returning to the Salt Lak e Valley , winter quarters in the winter, where he remained till the spr ing of 18 57, when he crossed the plains to Utah, and has resided in diff erent part s of is territory up to the time of his death
He died as he lived, firm in the faith of the new and everlasting c o venant . He leaves a large family being the father of nine sons and el ev en daughters. Before his death he expressed a desire to be laid besid e h is father in the Fillmore Cemetery , therefore his remains were broug h t here and deposited as requested, on the morning of the 6th inst–co m (D esert News)



Mormon Battalion

In July 1846, under the authority of U.S. Army Captain James Allen and w i th the encouragement of Mormon leader Brigham Young, the Mormon Battali o n was mustered in at Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory. The battalion wa s th e direct result of Brigham Young’s correspondence on 26 January 184 6 to J esse C. Little, presiding elder over the New England and Middle St ates Mi ssion. Young instructed Little to meet with national leaders in W ashingto n, D.C., and to seek aid for the migrating Latter-day Saints, th e majorit y of whom were then in the Iowa Territory. In response to Young ’s letter , Little journeyed to Washington, arriving on 21 May 1846, jus t eight day s after Congress had declared war on Mexico.
Little met with President James K. Polk on 5 June 1846 and urged him t o a id migrating Mormon pioneers by employing them to fortify and defen d th e West. The president offered to aid the pioneers by permitting the m to r aise a battalion of five hundred men, who were to join Colonel Ste phen W . Kearny, Commander of the Army of the West, and fight for the Uni ted Sta tes in the Mexican War. Little accepted this offer.
Colonel Kearny designated Captain James Allen, later promoted to Lieuten a nt Colonel, to raise five companies of volunteer soldiers from the able -b odied men between the ages of eighteen and forty-five in the Mormon en cam pments in Iowa. On 26 June 1846 Allen arrived at the encampment of Mt . Pi sgah. He was treated with suspicion as many believed that the raisin g o f a battalion was a plot to bring trouble to the migrating Saints.
Allen journeyed from Mt. Pisgah to Council Bluffs, where on 1 July 184 6 h e allayed Mormon fears by giving permission for the Saints to encam p on U nited States lands if the Mormons would raise the desired battalio n. Brig ham Young accepted this, recognizing that the enlistment of the b attalio n was the first time the government had stretched forth its arm t o aid th e Mormons.
On 16 July 1846 some 543 men enlisted in the Mormon Battalion. From amo n g these men Brigham Young selected the commissioned officers; they incl ud ed Jefferson Hunt, Captain of Company A; Jesse D. Hunter, Captain of C omp any B; James Brown, Captain of Company C; Nelson Higgins, Captain o f Comp any D; and Daniel C. Davis, Captain of Company E. Among the most p rominen t non-Mormon military officers immediately associated with the ba ttalio n march were Lt. Col. James Allen, First Lt. Andrew Jackson Smith , Lt. Co l. Philip St. George Cooke, and Dr. George Sanderson. Also accom panying t he battalion were approximately thirty-three women, twenty of w hom serve d as laundresses, and fifty-one children.
The battalion marched from Council Bluffs on 20 July 1846, arrivin g o n 1 August 1846 at Fort Leavenworth (Kansas), where they were outfitt ed f or their trek to Santa Fe. Battalion members drew their arms and acc outre ments, as well as a clothing allowance of forty-two dollars, at th e fort . Since a military uniform was not mandatory, many of the soldier s sent t heir clothing allowances to their families in the encampments i n Iowa.
The march from Fort Leavenworth was delayed by the sudden illness of Col o nel Allen. Capt. Jefferson Hunt was instructed to begin the march to Sa nt a Fe; he soon received word that Colonel Allen was dead. Allen’s deat h ca used confusion regarding who should lead the battalion to Santa Fe . Lt. A . J. Smith arrived from Fort Leavenworth claiming the lead, and h e was ch osen the commanding officer by the vote of battalion officers. T he leader ship transition proved difficult for many of the enlisted men , as they we re not consulted about the decision.
Smith and his accompanying surgeon, a Dr. Sanderson, have been describ e d in journals as the “heaviest burdens” of the battalion. Under Smith’ s d ictatorial leadership and with Sanderson’s antiquated prescriptions , th e battalion marched to Santa Fe. On this trek the soldiers suffere d fro m excessive heat, lack of sufficient food, improper medical treatme nt, an d forced long-distance marches.
The first division of the Mormon Battalion approached Santa Fe on 9 Octo b er 1846. Their approach was heralded by Col. Alexander Doniphan, who or de red a one-hundred-gun salute in their honor. At Santa Fe, Smith was re lie ved of his command by Lt. Col. Philip St. George Cooke. Cooke, awar e of t he rugged trail between Santa Fe and California and also aware tha t one s ick detachment had already been sent from the Arkansas River to F ort Pueb lo in Colorado, ordered the remaining women and children to acco mpany th e sick of the battalion to Pueblo for the winter. Three detachme nts consi sting of 273 people eventually were sent to Pueblo for the wint er of 1846 -47.
The remaining soldiers, with four wives of officers, left Santa Fe for C a lifornia on 19 October 1846. They journeyed down the Rio Grande del Nor t e and eventually crossed the Continental Divide on 28 November 1846. Wh il e moving up the San Pedro River in present-day Arizona, their column w a s attacked by a herd of wild cattle. In the ensuing fight, a number o f bu lls were killed and two men were wounded. Following the “Battle of t he Bu lls,” the battalion continued their march toward Tucson, where the y antic ipated a possible battle with the Mexican soldiers garrisoned the re. At T ucson, the Mexican defenders temporarily abandoned their positio ns and n o conflict ensued.
On 21 December 1846 the battalion encamped on the Gila River. They cross e d the Colorado River into California on 9 and 10 January 1847. By 29 Ja nu ary 1847 they were camped at the Mission of San Diego, about five mile s f rom General Kearny’s quarters. That evening Colonel Cooke rode to Kea rny’ s encampment and reported the battalion’s condition. On 30 January 1 847 C ooke issued orders enumerating the accomplishments of the Mormon Ba ttalio n. “History may be searched in vain for an equal march of infantry . Hal f of it has been through a wilderness where nothing but savages an d wil d beasts are found, or deserts where, for lack of water, there is n o livi ng creature.”
During the remainder of their enlistment, some members of the battalio n w ere assigned to garrison duty at either San Diego, San Luis Rey, or C iuda d de los Angeles. Other soldiers were assigned to accompany Genera l Kearn y back to Fort Leavenworth. All soldiers, whether en route to th e Salt La ke Valley via Pueblo or still in Los Angeles, were mustered ou t of the Un ited States Army on 16 July 1847. Eighty-one men chose to ree nlist and se rve an additional eight months of military duty under Captai n Daniel C. D avis in Company A of the Mormon Volunteers. The majority o f the soldier s migrated to the Salt Lake Valley and were reunited with t heir pioneerin g families.
The men of the Mormon Battalion are honored for their willingness to fig h t for the United States as loyal American citizens. Their march of som e 2 ,000 miles from Council Bluffs to California is one of the longest mi lita ry marches in history. Their participation in the early developmen t of Ca lifornia by building Fort Moore in Los Angeles, building a courth ouse i n San Diego, and making bricks and building houses in southern Cal iforni a contributed to the growth of the West.
Following their discharge, many men helped build flour mills and sawmil l s in northern California. Some of them were among the first to discove r g old at Sutter’s Mill. Men from Captain Davis’s Company A were respons ibl e for opening the first wagon road over the southern route from Calif orni a to Utah in 1848.
Historic sites associated with the battalion include the Mormon Battali o n Memorial Visitor’s Center in San Diego, California; Fort Moore Pione e r Memorial in Los Angeles, California; and the Mormon Battalion Monume n t in Memory Grove, Salt Lake City, Utah. Monuments relating to the batt al ion are also located in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado, and trail m ark ers have been placed on segments of the battalion route.

GABRIEL HUNTSMAN

Gabriel Huntsman was born Oct. 5, 1830 in Perry, Richland County, Ohio , t he son of James and Mary Johnson [Johnston] Huntsman. In 1836 the fam il y was converted to the Mormon (Latter-day saints Church). James was or dai ned an Elder and sent on a mission to the Southern States.
The family moved West with the Church and in July 1846, Brigham Young ch o se several of the brethren to act as Bishops, among them was James Hunt sm an. The members of the Church planted crops and took care of them coll ect ively. James and several of the other men were out harvesting wheat w he n a mob surrounded them, whipped them severely and sent them back to N auv oo. (Journal History)
On Oct. 30, 1846, Gabriel and three other members of his family were a t H auns Mill when the massacre occurred. They escaped being killed by hi din g under some logs. The Huntsman family stayed at Pottawatomie County , Iow a during 1850, when Cholera was rampant among the members of the Ch urch . Isaac, a brother of Gabriel got Cholera and died at the age of 22 , an d was buried in Pottawatomie, Iowa. (Gabriel stopped to visit Isaac’ s gra ve when he went on a mission in 1872) .
The Huntsman’s moved with the church on their westward trek, and final l y crossed the plains to Utah in 1852, and were sent by Brigham Young t o h elp settle Fillmore. They lived about in the middle of the houses, wh ic h faced Main Street in the old fort (at about what is now Main and Fir s t North Street)
When Gabriel married Eunice Holbrook on November 29, 1855, they starte d h ousekeeping in a little house made of adobes in the southwest corne r of t he old fort. Gabriel Riley, their first child was born Nov. 1, 185 6 in th e old fort, at twenty minutes past twelve A.M. Saturday morning . (From th e journal of Gabriel Huntsman).
When Riley was just five months old, Gabriel left Utah with the first ha n dcart missionaries fro a mission to Canada. As the missionaries went wi th out “purse and script”, Gabriel’s journal which he kept of his mission , t ells of his stopping to work along the way in order to earn money fo r hi s expenses. He harvested crops, made ax handles which he sold to sto res , killed hogs, rendered lard and did other farm labor in order to liv e wh ile on his mission. There was no planned program for the missionarie s, th ey went from town to town trying to get a place to stay and fin d a room i n which to hold a meeting so they could teach the Gospel of th e Latter-da y Saints to the people. From Gabriel’s journal, one can tel l that the mis sionaries of that time seemed to work at odd jobs more tha n the time the y spent preaching. Gabriel was a very friendly man and see med to have mad e many friends on his two missions. He had many relative s in Iowa, Illino is and Ohio whom he visited and preached the doctrine t o them. He visite d his old home in Perry, Richland County, Ohio. On hi s mission to Canad a he visited in New Hampshire, where Eunice Dunning, m other of Eunice Hol brook Huntsman was born.
Gabriel and Eunice Holbrook Huntsman (born April 15, 1838, in Missouri ) w ere the parents of eleven children: Gabriel Riley, born Nov. 1, 1856 ; Ors on Henry, born Dec. 21, 1859; Joseph Alonzo, born Jan. 14. 1861; Hy rum Fr anklin, born Jan. 13, 1863; Eunice Mary, born March 6, 1966; Hebe r Chandl er, born June 21, 1868, died, (was killed when thrown from a hor se); Euni ce Mary, born March 6, 1866, died Oct. 20, 1934 (she married Mi ah Day); L afayette Erasmus, born Jan. 18, 1871; Edith, born April 9, 187 3, died Nov . 12, 1944 at Los Angeles and had no children; Josephine Pear l, born Oct . 8, 1877, died Jan. 19, 1949 and is buried in Forest Lawn Ce metery, Lo s Angeles; Eva, born Nov. 12, 1879 and died Oct. 9, 1964, als o buried i n Forest Lawn Cemetery, Los Angeles; Allen Camel Green Huntsma n, born Dec . 15, 1882, died.
Gabriel was an excellent gardener and each time he went on a mission h e b rought seeds and slips of plants back with him to plant on his own pr oper ty. He also brought plants with him when he came to Utah in 18152. O n th e property, which was his first home at 130 West Center Street, is p lante d a redbud tree that came from a slip, which Gabriel brought to Fil lmor e in 1858. He also planted apple and plum trees all along the cree k bank s at Center Street and North and along the East ditch on the prope rty lat er owned by Gabriel Riley, (his son). These trees were still livi ng in 19 66.
In 1871 Gabriel and Eunice built a large hotel with 24 rooms and a lar g e basement for keeping milk, butter, cheese, eggs and vegetables. Ther e w as no refrigeration in those days and everyone kept their food in coo l ce llars, or well houses. This hotel was the largest hotel South of Pro vo fo r many years. President Brigham Young always stopped there over nig ht o n his way to his St. George home for the winter, and whenever he pas sed t hrough Fillmore, as did Willford Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow and all o f the ch urch authorities for many years. Eunice was an excellent cook an d alway s set a good table. An account of some of the food set before Bri gham You ng is to be found in his writings. In the north corner of the ho tel wa s a small department store, which Gabriel operated. He bought “goo ds fro m the States”, as the merchandise was called that had to cross th e plains , and sold them for produce raised by the residents of Fillmore , since th ere was very little cash in the early days of Fillmore.
In connection with the hotel was a large barn where horses could be pu t i n stalls and fed and cared for, as the travel was always by teams o f hors es, or even by horseback. The Huntsman’s also had cows to supply t he milk , butter and cheese, while the steers furnished meat for their ta ble. The y also had chickens, hogs and sheep to help supply food for th e family an d hotel. Gabriel was very fond of horses and always had beaut iful animal s and carriages. His children were sent to the Millard Academ y then to th e Brigham Young Academy to finish their schooling.
Gabriel and Eunice were both good managers and soon had amassed a lo t o f property in Fillmore, and were considered wealthy. In 1901 when Fil lmor e celebrated her Semi-centennial Celebration, Eunice was chosen as P ionee r Queen. Her daughter, Edith, made her a beautiful white satin dres s wit h a purple satin robe for the crowning ceremony. She recited an ori gina l poem expressing her gratitude at being chosen Queen and stating th at sh e never dreamed of such luxury when she and the others were crossin g th e plains (she came in 1848). In 1904 Eunice and three of her daughte rs vi sited the St. Louis exposition and then visited in Caldwell Count y Missou ri where Eunice was born. The ride in a Pullman on the train wa s quite di fferent from the way Eunice had traveled to Utah in 1848, walk ing most o f the way. Eunice took pneumonia in 1906.
Gabriel lived in the hotel with his daughter Edith and her husband Dr. O r lando Duckworth. He died Aug. 5, 1907. Both are buried in the Fillmor e Ce metery and have a large tombstone (just like the one the Chandler Ho lbroo k family have) with all of the names of their children inscribed o n the t ombstone with their names.

Gabriel married Eunice Emma Holbrook, daughter of Chandler and Eunice Du n ning Nov. 29, 1855. Their first child, Gabriel Riley, was born Nov 1, 1 85 6 in the old fort. The next year Gabriel left on a mission to Iowa, Oh i o and Illinois to help Church converts come to Utah by hand cart. Afte r h is mission, Gabriel brought merchandise, seeds and cuttings of plant s t o Fillmore. He obtained a deed to the Southeast corner of Main and Ce nte r Streets on which he built a large brick home, hotel and store combi ned . He planted an orchard from his cuttings and built a large barn Eas t o f the hotel where horses and carriages could be sheltered.
Their second son, Orson Henry, was born Del. 21, 1859. He married Franc e s Beauregard in 1884. Joseph Alonzo was born Jan 14, 1862 and married E ll a Ray, but was killed in a hunting accident in 1885. Hyrum Franklin, b or n in 1863, died of Diphtheria at 9 years of age. Eunice Mary, the firs t d aughter, was born March 6, 1866. She married Miah Day. Heber Chandler , bo rn June 21, 1868 was very athletic. He was thrown from a horse and d ied w hen he was 22. Lafayette Erasmus was born Jan. 18, 1871 and marrie d Eliza beth McMahoon. They had one son, Nolan, and were later divorced . Edith Lo retta was born April 9, 1873. She was an expert dressmaker an d tailor. Sh e married T. Orlondo Duckworth, one of the first doctors t o practice medi cine in Fillmore. Josephine Pearl was born Oct. 8, 1877 a nd married Fran k Arch. Eva Lorena, born Nov. 12, 1879, married Albert Be yer of Philadelp hia. Allen Camel Green was born Dec. 15, 1882 and was ve ry handsome and a thletic. He married Florence Chistopherson.
Gabriel left on another mission in 1871 to Canada, leaving Eunice with s e ven children. She operated the hotel and store, and dried, cured and pr es erved meat, fruits and vegetables for winter use. She made all their c lot hes as well as all the bread, butter, cheese, candles and soap.
Gabriel became wealthy, owning many houses and lots in Fillmore as wel l a s land in the old field from which he obtained feed for his stock.
Eunice died of Pneumonia June 1906. Gabriel died the next year Aug. 5, 1 9 07, and are buried in the Fillmore Cemetery.

Their first child, Gabriel Riley, was b or n Nov 1, 1856 in the old fort. The next year Gabriel left with the fir s t handcart missionaries for a mission to Iowa, Illinois and Ohio. Afte r f inishing his mission, Gabriel brought merchandise, seeds and cutting s o f plants with him to Fillmore. He planted many fruit trees from the s eed s such as apples, pears, plumbs, and nectarines. He obtained a deed t o th e northwest corner of the block on Center and Main Streets on whic h he bu ilt a large brick home, hotel and store combined. The store was l ocated i n the northwest corner of the building. They also built a larg e barn eas t of the hotel, where the horses were cared for, as people tra veled by wa gons and carriages in those days. Another son, Orson Henry, w as born Del . 21, 1859. He died October 21, 1931 in Fillmore. Joseph Alon zo was bor n January 14, 1861, and was shot while hunting rabbits, Januar y 7, 1885 , by a boyfriend, William King. Alonzo was married to Ella Ray . Hyrum Fra nklin, was born January 13, 1863, and died October 3, 1872 i n Fillmore. E unice Mary was born March 6, 1866 and died October 20, 1934 . She was marr ied to Miah Day. Lafayette Erasmus was born January 18, 18 71, in Fillmore . Edith was born April 9, 1873, died November 12, 1944. J osephine Pearl w as born October 8, 1877, and died January 19, 1949. Ev a was born Novembe r 12, 1879. Allen was born December 15, 1882. Heber Ch andler, born June 2 1, 1868. He was killed, when thrown from a horse .
Gabriel again left on a mission to Canada in December 1871. This tim e h e left a wife and seven children, who earned a living by operating ho te l and store, while he was gone. Eunice was an excellent cook, as wel l a s being a good manager. They raised all their own meat, vegetables, a nd f ruits, which she meat, fruits and vegetables for winter use. She mad e al l their clothes as well as all the bread, butter, cheese, candles an d soa p.
Gabriel became wealthy, owning many houses and lots in Fillmore as wel l a s land in the old field, from which he obtained his feed for his herd s o f cattle, sheep and purebred horses.
Eunice died of Pneumonia June 1906. Gabriel died the next year Aug. 5, 1 9 07, and are buried in the Fillmore Cemetery.




GABRIEL HUNTSMAN

Gabriel Huntsman had a very active, colorful life. Some years were fill e d with tragedy, while others were full of happiness and gaiety, howeve r G abriel never burdened others with his troubles. He kept journals on t he t wo missions he served for the Mormon Church, and many times he wen t to be d in the forest, hungry, as he was on one of those missions, whic h were c ommon in the early days of the Mormon Church when missionaries w ent “with out purse and script.” Gabriel would work awhile to get some fu nds, in or der to eat, if he were in difficult territory where there wer e no Saints , or prospects of any one joining the Church. After he had ea rned a few d ollars he would preach awhile or hold cottage meetings. The y seemed to b e on their own, as there were no special instructions give n each missiona ry, they stayed in a town as long as they thought they co uld make any con verts, and moved to another as they chose.
Gabriel was born Oct. 5, 1830 in Perry Richland County, Ohio where his f a ther and mother, James and Mary Johnston Huntsman had moved from Pennsy lv ania. They owned a large farm and Jesse, the brother of James, owne d a fa rm adjoining the farm owned by James. Gabriel was only eight year s old wh en his parents sold their home in Perry, Ohio and followed the b ody of th e Saints, as they were driven from one state to another.
While Gabriel brought a trunk filled with merchandise, with him from h i s first mission and entered into the mercantile business. Little Riley , w ho was only six months old when Gabriel left for his mission, could w al k and talk, when Gabriel returned. Gabriel took Riley with him everywh er e and soon Riley could ride a horse by himself. Gabriel had well groom ed , handsome horses and Gabriel grew to love horses as mush as did Gabri el.
Gabriel soon had a large hotel built with over twenty rooms and two or t h ree large rooms in the basement. They had a large barn and the boys we r e taught to care for the horses of the guests of the hotel. The first f ou r children, Gabriel, Riley, Orson Henry, Alonzo and Hyrum were all boy s , which gave Gabriel much help in his work but did little to lighten t h e work of Eunice, who was always hustling to get all of the work done w hi ch was expected of her.
Gabriel had a quick brain and saw ways of making more money, by investi n g in property. He soon had many tracts of land, which he sold for home s , thus increasing his income.
His children were sent to school in Fillmore, as long as they could go , t hen Gabriel saw that they had means to attend the Brigham Young Acade my . Each child was of a different temperament and some of the children p ref erred to take jobs rather than attend the Academy. Gabriel gave the m th e opportunity to attend but did not try to force them to attend if t hey p referred to do otherwise.
Gabriel was an excellent gardener and grew many varieties of vegetable s f or the meals, which Eunice prepared so well. Brigham Young makes ment io n of Eunice’s cooking and the many varieties of food she served whenev e r he stayed at the Hotel which was at least twice a year as Brigham we n t to St. George to spend the winter, as it was much warmer than Salt La ke . He had a wife and winter home in St. George, (more than one wife), a s h is gardener writes to Brigham, “I saw your wife today and told her yo u wo uld be coming soon. I can’t tell you her name but it is the wife wit h th e lilac in front of her window.” (This is the first time I remembe r o f a woman being identified by the plant she had, rather than by her l ooks ).
Gabriel was a kind, thoughtful husband and father and provided well fo r h is family. He never seemed to think of himself but was always tryin g to d o something helpful for everyone. He planted many fruit trees alon g the d itches, which watered his fields and other property. He was extr a fond o f fruit and saw to it that some fruit was growing wherever he ha d to work .
Although he was not a large man, he was strong and vigorous and worked a l most to his dying day. He passed quietly away August 5, 1907 and is bur ie d beside his wife in the Fillmore Cemetery.
In the same year that Franklin died, their first daughter, Mary was bor n . Many people now living knew and loved Mary, wife of Miah Day, and sh e a nd her husband, too, were builders and the old Day Hotel still stand s o n the southeast corner of Center and Main streets.

EUNICE EMMA HOLBROOK HUNTSMAN

Eunice Holbrook was born April 16, 1838 in Caldwell County, Missouri t o C handler and Eunice Dunning Holbrook. The family had joined the LDS Ch urc h in 1833 and had moved from New York to Ohio, Illinois, Iowa and Mis sour i where mob violence broke out and forced them to move farther west.
When they crossed the plains in 1846 in the company of Newell Knight, Eu n ice was ten years old. They spent the winter in a friendly Pawnee Indi a n Village since it was too late in the season to begin their journey.
The families of Chandler Holbrook, his brother Joseph and Dwight Hardi n g all traveled together and arrived in Salt Lake in 1848 where they liv e d for two years before moving onto farms near Bountiful. Here Chandle r re ceived a call from Brigham Young to join the Anson Call Company an d go so uth to locate a Capitol of the Territory. They lived in the Old F ort duri ng their first years in Fillmore, and then built a brick home wi th a larg e rock barn, which was the stopping place for Pony Express Ride rs.
Eunice learned to sew, knit, cook, spin, card and weave as well as to cr o chet and embroider. She played the accordion, had a lovely contralto vo ic e and was in theatricals and musicals in the early days of Salt Lake , Bou ntiful and Fillmore. She was very popular with the young people an d man y young men courted her. But she married Gabriel Huntsman, eight ye ars he r senior, in 1855 when she was seventeen.
Although Eunice was only five foot two and weighted 105 pounds, she wa s v ery healthy and energetic. Gabriel went on a second mission to Canad a lea ving Eunice with seven children. The three older children helped wi th th e chores and Eunice’s father and brother helped too.
Gabriel had built a large brick home, hotel and store combined. Whenev e r Church authorities traveled through Fillmore, they stayed at the Hunt sm an Hotel. Eunice was an exceptionally good cook. Brigham Young mention e d her delicious meals on his way to his winter home in St. George.
In 1901 Eunice was chosen Semi-Annual Queen for Fillmore’s fiftieth anni v ersary celebration. In 1904 she and three of her daughters went by Pull ma n to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. What a thrill to skim over th e pl ains that she had mostly walked across as a girl.
Two years later Eunice contracted pneumonia and died June 6, 1906 leavi n g eight of her eleven children and a broken-hearted husband, all of wh o m adored her.

Another Pioneer Answers Last Call

Jacob Huntsman, a resident of this state since 1855 and early-day guid e o f Emigrant Parties, dies at home here.
Again the hand of death has been laid upon the rapidly-thinning rank s o f California pioneers, the latest to answer the inevitable summons be in g Jacob Huntsman, a native of Ohio, who passed away this morning at hi s h ome here. The decedent lacked but a few days of the age of four-scor e yea rs; his eightieth birthday falling on July 5th next. He leaves a wi dow an d seven children: James, John and Willis Huntsman and Mrs. Lorind a Holme s of Hollister, Mrs. Alice Hunt of Tree Pines, Mrs. Mary Stewar t of Arroy o Grande, California and William Huntsman of Millard County, U tah. Two br others survive the dead pioneer, Peter and Jesse Huntsman, bo th resident s of Utah. The former arrived here last week on a visit and w as present a t the final parting.
Jacob Huntsman was born in the state of Ohio, July 5, 1834. In 1855, th e n a youth of 22 years, he joined the tide of emigration then streamin g ac ross the plains to California. He drove an ox team and endured all o f th e hardships that menaced the path of the pioneer adventures. Arrivin g i n this State, he settled first at Watsonville, where he remained fo r fiv e or six years. The following years were passed in Southern Califor nia, i n the Counties of San Bernardino and Los Angeles, where he lived u ntil mo ving to Hollister eleven years ago. While living in San Bernardin o County , he married Martha Bickmore, the widow now left to mourn him.
During his life in the State, before his retirement on moving here, Mr . H untsman followed the occupation of ranching. Not continuously, howeve r, f or his was a life of varied experiences. Nine separate times after h is ar rival here; he crossed and re-crossed the continent as guide to emi gran t parties from the Eastern States. He learned the language and custo ms an d acquired and respect of the hostile Indians that menaced the safe ty o f the emigrant trains and his presence was often a hostage to the sa fet y of the persons under his escort.
It is related that a war party of redskins descended upon a train unde r h is guidance with the intention of utterly annilhating every person i n it . The Indians circled the wagons in war paint with bows strung and i t app eared as if nothing could prevent the massacre. Mr. Huntsman fearle ssly m ounted upon one of the wagons and commenced a language to the host ile chi efs in their own tongue with the result that they forbore in thei r deadl y purpose and moved away, the immigrants proceeding in safety.

Ely, Nevada -- Funeral services were held in Ely L. D. S. church Wedne s day afternoon for Peter Huntsman 90, Nevada-Utah pioneer, who died at h i s home in this city Monday evening. He is survived by his widow, Rebec c a Huntsman; two daughters, Mrs. Laura Johnson of Delta, Utah, and Mrs . Su sie Strange of Elko, Nevada; [and] a son, Dal Huntsman, of Fillmore , Utah ... Mr. Huntsman pioneered many years at Fillmore, where he serve d a numb er of terms as deputy sheriff.
He also was prominent in the early days at Salt Lake, where he serve d s everal years as deputy United States marshal."

In a letter, dated April 4, 1923, to his daughter Laura H. Johnson of De l ta, Utah, Peter wrote (to the best of his knowledge) the following hist or y of his family:

"Now my dear child, you wanted me to give you genealogy of my father a n d mother. I am glad you have written to me for it, as I am the only on e l iving that knows anything about them; all are dead, but me... I wil l no t be able to give you all of my father's and mother's relations. I c an gi ve you the names of all of my father's brothers, but not their ages . I ne ver saw my grandparents as I know of. My father and mother [were ] born i n the state of Pennsylvania in the year 1801... Father James Hun tsman wa s born June 6, 1801, my mother Mary Johnston Huntsman born in Se ptember 1 801."
"I will now give you my father's brothers names as follows: Uncle Jona t han Huntsman, stabbed to death by Indians; Jeremiah, died a natural dea th ; Peter; Jacob; (James, my father); William, died in Cache Valley; an d Un cle Samuel. My father had two sisters; I don't remember their names . I ne ver saw my mother's brothers and only one of her sisters; her nam e was Sa rah Johnston; she married Ira Ames [and] they both died in Cach e Valley."
"My father and mother were married in Pennsylvania* and moved from the r e to Kirtland, Ohio. 1830 they joined the Mormon Church when it first o rg anized. Father was the 36[th] member to join the Church... there [in K irt land]. They moved to Missouri [and were driven] out of Missouri in 18 39 a nd went to Nauvoo, Illinois. I was born on the way in a blacksmith s hop b efore they got out of the state [of Missouri]. They [were driven] o ut o f Illinois... in 1846 and moved to Iowa. In 1851, we emmigrated t o [the ] Salt Lake Valley." *Actually records indicate they married in O hio; se e Ohio County Marriage Records for James Huntsman and Mary Johnst on in Ri chland County, 19 November 1822.
"There [were] eleven children in Father's family, the oldest a girl La v ina... had quite a family and died in Illinois; Catherine, had a larg e fa mily, and died in California; Isaiah, the oldest boy, died in Annabe ll, U tah; Isaac died in Council Bluffs, Iowa -- he was 21 years old; Gab riel d ied in Fillmore; William died in Watsonville, California; Jacob di ed in H ollister, California; Jess died [at] St George, Utah; Peter Hunts man you r father; Sarah Huntsman married Joseph Giles -- she died in Hold en, Utah ; Kesiah, Doyle's mother, died in Fillmore. "... In 1866 the court appropriated $256 to reimburse acting Sherif f P eter Huntsman and eight temporary deputies, each at four dollars a da y fo r man and horse, for services rendered 'pursuing supposed thieves. ' Two o f the deputies were N.M. McBride and Wise Cropper. William S. Haw ley an d John Kenny were similarly remunerated two years later."
"...Peter Huntsman was elected county sheriff in 1875 during a tim e o f growing crime in the county. Particularly troublesome was a gang o f cat tle rustlers, robbers, and murderers headed by noted outlaw Ben Tas ker. T asker made his head quarters in western Iron County near Modena, b ut hi s illegal activities took place throughout west central Utah. Taske r an d his gang of robbers were attracted to western Utah because of th e exten sive mining activities that were occurring in Pioche, Nevada, an d at Silv er Reef, Frisco, and the Tintic Mining District in Utah. Count y farmers a nd ranchers who contracted to haul supplies and ore for the m ines or pedd led fresh produce and trailed cattle to the various mining c amps generall y were easy targets for the outlaws."
"...Ben Tasker also stole cattle from county ranchers. On one occasio n , near Deseret, [Tasker] and his men made off with twenty head of cattl e . Sheriff Huntsman had been warned earlier by Judge Emerson of Provo ne ve r to try to apprehend Tasker without at least twenty men and a cannon . Th e loss of cattle to the ranchers was significant, however, so Huntsm an an d part-time deputies Joe Ray and Wise Cropper of Deseret followed t he thi eves south into Iron County, discounting the judge's warnings."
"Huntsman and his two deputies were able to get ahead of the thieve s a nd the cattle before the rustlers could reach their hide-out. Huntsma n, w ith some difficulty, was able to arrest Tasker, returning him to Fil lmore , where he was placed in Huntsman's home. The county, apparently, l acke d a suitable jail. Huntsman's house proved to be unsuitable, with Ta ske r soon making his escape. Huntsman again was able to capture Tasker w itho ut incident. However, the cattle rustling problem would not be perma nentl y solved for some time."

This story was written by one of Sarah Huntsmans’ children. I do not kn o w how or where I got it, but I am her Great Granddaughter, Earline Gil e s Kvist.

Sarah Huntsman Giles was the 10th child of James Huntsman and Mary Johns t on Huntsman. She was born in Nauvoo, Illinois on the 3rd of June, 1841.
Her father was the 36th member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-D a y Saints.
The family moved to Kirtland, Ohio in 1830. From there they moved to Jac k son County, Missouri where they stayed until 1839. They were driven ou t o f Missouri on 27 February, 1839. The next day their son was born in a n ol d blacksmith shop. The next day, 28 February, 1839, they began the j ourne y to Nauvoo, Illinois. They lived there until the martyrdom of th e Prophe t Joseph Smith.
In 1846 they moved to Council Bluff. They were among the first settler s t here.
Grandfather Huntsman built a grist mill there and sold flour to the immi g rants
They traveled to Utah in Captain Merriotts’ Company of 50 wagons. Capta i n William Barton was Captain over their 10 wagons. They settled in Sal t L ake City on Mill Creek.
They were called by President Brigham Young to go to Fillmore, Millard C o unty in 1853. Grandfather Huntsman held a great many positions to trus t i n Fillmore, which was once the State Capitol of Utah.
During the early days he acted as Santa Claus to the poor of that town.
My mother, Sarah, married Joseph Sinkler Giles on January 30, 1869 in Fi l lmore.
My father came to Utah as a surgeon in Johnstons Army
My mother made buckskin shirts and pants for many of the young men of Ho l den, Utah, and also made clothing for men which she sold in the store . Sh e owned the first sewing machine in Holden. She was a great dancer a nd si nger. She gave birth to thirteen children. She was also a Relief So ciet y teacher when it was first organized and was a faithful teacher unt il he r death

A Life Sketch of Joseph Riley Giles and Polly Frances Harmon

When I was growing up, I lived in the same block with my father’s parent s , Joseph Riley and Polly Frances Harmon Giles. I have fond memories o f th ose two beautiful people.
My Grandfather Giles, as well as my father, was a blacksmith and owned t h e only blacksmith shop in Lehi, Utah. Lehi is located about 30 miles so ut h of Salt Lake City, Utah. At that time the population of Lehi was abo u t 3000 people. I can remember standing in the door of the blacksmith sh o p and watching them shoe horses and pound on the anvil and pull a lon g co rd which caused the bellows to heat the iron horseshoes in order t o do th e repair work that they did.
Grandpa Riley (he was always known as Riley rather than Joseph) loved li t tle children and my brother and my sisters were always warmly greeted a n d loved and cuddled whenever we stopped in. He was so pleasant and kin d a nd seemed to know just how to talk to children and comfort them whene ve r they needed him. He was never too busy to hold us in his lap and le t u s tell him our little troubles. We dearly loved him. He was the sweet est , kindest and most pleasant man I ever knew.
My grandmother, Polly Giles, was just as pleasant and kind as Grandpa. S h e was so jolly and happy – always singing as she worked. We would sit a n d listen to her sing. The songs that I remember most were: “Beautiful D re amer”, “Silver Threads Among the Gold” and “When You and I Were Young , Ma ggie”. Their home was such a relaxed place. We always felt welcome a nd co uld usually count on receiving a good piece of homemade bread and j am.
Grandpa Riley was a good-looking, strong, well-built, slender man abo u t 5 foot 10 or 11 inches tall and weighed perhaps 180 pounds. He ha d a fu ll head of brown hair, slightly streaked with gray. It was slightl y wave d and parted on one side. He wore a full mustache that was alway s neatl y trimmed. His countenance was pleasant and smiling. I always rem ember hi m in his dark blue bib overalls.
Grandma Polly was a very large woman –perhaps about 5 feet 7 or 8 inch e s tall. It was a characteristic of the Harmon family to be rather larg e . She had a pretty face and her hair was a beautiful gray (I seem to re me mber Grandma Polly telling me that she was prematurely gray at age 25) . S he wore it softly pulled on top of her head and there was always a so ft w ave across the front that made her look beautiful. She was always pl easan t and smiling. I remember her most in printed house dresses wit h a clea n checked apron.
I can remember sitting in Grandma Polly’s kitchen as she would sit and m e nd socks. I would watch how she did it, weaving the darning cotton bac k a nd forth. I became good at darning myself because of her. I also reme mbe r her teaching me how to mend and repair clothes. This is also someth in g that helped in raising my family. I can picture her now singing an d men ding while rocking in her rocking chair, before the wood stove.
Grandma and Grandpa’s youngest child was Helen, who was only one year ol d er than I. Helen and I were great pals and we were together so much. O n e of the things we did was play “hide and seek”. Grandma would even le t u s play this in the house and I wonder now how she ever put up with m y bei ng there so much.
I was always warned by mother when I went to Grandma Polly’s house, nev e r to mention the Church. Even though they were good people, their bitte rn ess toward the Church, which was created by Polly’s mother, Elmeda Str ing ham Harmon was always present.
After Elmeda’s husband, Appleton Milo Harmon, died, she began to rememb e r her comfortable circumstances back in Salt Lake City and harbored il l f eelings toward Brigham Young because they were sent to southern Uta h an d suffered hardship and deprivation.
However, I feel sure their names were never taken from the records of t h e Church, because I can remember being in their home where Ward Teache r s and the visiting teachers would call, and they were always very poli t e to them even though they never attended church.
My grandparents have been dead for many years, and I have had a desire f o r a long time to know more about their early lives, so that my childre n m ay come to understand and to know about those fine people. After corr espo nding with their daughter, Mabel Giles Cox I have learned a few thin g s I would like to relate.
Joseph Riley Giles was born in Fillmore (near Holden), Millard County, U t ah on October 8, 1860. He was baptized 26 June 1869. His father, Josep h S inkler Giles was born in West Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvani a. J oseph Sinkler Giles joined the United States Army and was sent to Ut ah wi th Johnston’s Army to investigate the Mormons. This was in 1857 whi ch wa s 10 years after the Mormon Saints arrived in the Salt Lake Valley . Whil e he was in Utah, he joined the Mormon Church and never returned a gain t o his homeland or ever saw his parents again. Joseph Sinkler Gile s settle d in Holden, Utah and there married Sarah Huntsman.
Sarah Huntsman and her parents, James Huntsman and Mary Johnston, had jo i ned the Mormon Church around 1830 and lived in Nauvoo, Illinois. They c ro ssed the plains with the Mormon Saints in 1851. They were sent to Hold en , Millard County, Utah, by Brigham Young to colonize that part of th e sta te.
Polly Frances Harmon Giles was born in Toquerville, Washington County, U t ah on March 4, 1864. She was baptized 23 November 1946 – previous bapti s m date unknown. Her father, Appleton Milo Harmon, was born in Conneaut , E rie County, Pennsylvania. He and his parents, Jessie Pierce Harmon an d An na Barnes, had joined the Mormon Church in 1842 and moved to Nauvoo , Illi nois. While living in Nauvoo, he met and married Elmeda Stringham . She an d her parents, George Stringham and Polly Hendrickson, had joine d the Mor mon Church in 1839 and moved to Nauvoo.
Appleton Milo Harmon was a man of great strength and ability. He came ac r oss the plains with Brigham Young in 1847 and made many trips back an d fo rth across the plains to bring his wife and his parents and wife’s p arent s to Utah. He was sent to Toquerville, Washington County, Utah by B righa m Young to colonize that part of the country. He lived there for ma ny yea rs, and finally settled in Holden, Millard County, Utah where Poll y and R iley met and married.
Little is known of their courtship, but they were married on May 19, 18 8 2 in Holden, Millard County, Utah. He was 22 and she was 18.
Four children were born to Polly and Riley while living in Holden: Elme d a (Meda) Giles born August 6, 1883, Dennis Giles born August 17, 1886 , Ma bel Giles born January 13, 1894 and Shirley Robert Giles born Februa ry 17 , 1898.
Joseph Riley Giles was a natural born mechanic. When he was a young bo y , about 14 or 15 years old, the farmers in the community had bought a t hr eshing machine. It had come “knocked down” and no one knew how to asse mbl e it. So Riley Giles did it!
Riley bought a tract of land east and south of Holden and became a farm e r as well as a blacksmith a mechanic. This was a perfect location. He h a d cows and horses and a great deal of pasture land. He built a find hou s e on this land and always had a garden to help feed his family. There w a s a spring on this land that was the source of their drinking water. T h e water was in a large well. A frame roof was built over the well in or de r to keep it clean and protected. They carried water to the house in b uck ets. Rain water was caught in a barrel to wash clothes.
One day, Mabel was sent to the well for water and as she looked at the r i m of the water tank, there lay a long watch snake. She was so frighten e d that she couldn’t scream but ran to the house making much squawking n oi ses. She can still remember that scary feeling to this day!
Riley did black smithing as well as farming while living Holden. He ma d e each of children a “tack hammer” – a small hammer on one end and a ta c k puller on the other end. This was made entirely of iron. He also ma d e a “flat iron” entirely of iron, which when heated on the old wood sto ve , was heavy but a good pressing iron.
Riley could shoe a horse to perfection. Some of the horses were wild a n d hard to handle, but he had a way of running his hand over them and th e y would calm down with his touch.
Riley was also a “Bronco Buster”. He could ride wild horses and calve s a t public events around the town. He was never thrown from a horse, bu t on ce thrown from a calf. Note” My father, Dennis and my grandfather, R ile y owned a beautiful team of roan colored horses. Their names were “Ol d Cu b”, and “Bawley”.
At one time while the family was still living Holden, Riley purchased so m e produce from the farmers, and procured a large load of home cured ha m a nd bacon, wheat, dried corn and oats, and traveled in a covered wago n an d peddled his produce. He traveled to Elko, Nevada and other cities . Some times he would be gone several months selling a doing black smithi ng alon g the way. He always came home for Christmas! He had a dog name d “Tago” w ho always went with him, sitting on the seat beside him. Whe n came home , usually in the night or early evening Polly would open th e door and “Ta go” would jump into the house and dash to the bedroom int o the arms of Ma bel “Tago” was one of the family.
Riley also ran a sawmill in Pioneer Canyon near Holden. Mabel can rememb e r the piles of sawdust. He was a very hand a versatile man a natural me ch anic, able to do many kinds of work.
Joseph Riley and Polly Frances were also natural musicians. In those yea r s they lived in Holden, they played for dances in the community. Rile y pl ayed the violin by ear, and Polly played the organ by ear. Their hom e wa s always full of music and happiness. They had music in their souls ! Rile y had traded a wagon for the violin he owned, and it was a very go od one . Mabel was the one who inherited this violin and has given it t o her son , Edward Riley Cox.
In talking to the sister of grandpa Joseph Riley, I found that he beca m e dissatisfie with the Church because he was chided by the brethren bec au se he began to do some of his farm work on Sunday. This led him to sta y a way more often and gradually he didn’t go to church at all. As his ch ildr en came along, he neglected to have any of them baptized.
In about the year 1900, the Joseph Riley Giles family decided to move no r th, nearer to Salt Lake City. Polly’s father, Appleton Milo Harmon, ha d d ied in Holden when he was only 57 years old. Polly’s mother, Elmeda S trin gham Harmon, was then living in American Fork, Utah, to be near on e of he r sons, Jesse Harmon, who lived in Provo, Utah. Riley and his fam ily move d to American Fork to be near her. They lived there for awhile , then purc hased a blacksmith shop and a house in Lehi, which is onl y 3 miles nort h of American Fork. This was an old adobe house with the b lacksmith sho p right next door, located on Main Street very near the bus iness sectio n of Lehi. Eventually a house was built for Polly’s mother , Elmeda String ham Harmon, on the same lot on Main Street.
Two more children were born to Riley and Polly in Lehi: Donald Frankli n G iles born March 14, 1905 and Helen Jeannette Giles born November 22 , 1907 .
Joseph Riley worked at black smithing for many years in Lehi. After my f a ther, Dennis, grew up and married, he did black smithing also with hi s fa ther (I have mentioned earlier that we lived just through the bloc k fro m my grandparents). When the era of the automobiles came into bein g, Den nis opened a garage to sell and repair automobiles. My father an d grandfa ther traded houses and business locations. This would make the m each liv e next door to their business. The address now the Riley Gile s home woul d be the red brick house at 39 South Center Street, Lehi, Uta h; and the a ddress for the Dennis Giles home would be the white frame ho use at 30 Eas t Min Street, Lehi, Utah (The house that was originally bui lt for Elmed a Stringham Harmon.)
Besides doing black smithing, Riley tried his hand at inventing. He an d h is brother, Jesse, invented a “Brush Grubber”. He made the iron prong s th at pulled the sage brush up by the roots. It was pulled by horses. I t wor ked very well, so they applied for a patent. But the cost proved t o be to o much, so the project was soon forgotten.
Another venture that Riley made was to work for the Land Clearing and Im p rovement Company. He applied for a tract of land west of the city of Le h i near Cedar Fort. He worked the ground after clearing it, planted whea t , had a good crop and sold the wheat around the area. But the deal to o bt ain the land fell through, so he went back to Lehi and to blacksmithin g a gain.
Grandma Polly Giles was homebody. Taking care of her family was her lif e . They came first always. Her sweet, loving pleasant personality was wh a t made us love her. She made everyone so welcome in her home.
One of the highlights that I remember was going Holden to family reunion s . How they all loved to get together and visit and sing! There was alwa y s music.
At the end of Joseph Riley’s life, he was employed by a construction com p any in a place called Toplift, in Cedar Valley, Utah. I don’t know th e na me of the company, but he was tangled into a chain saw that threw hi m o a fly wheel crushing him. He was taken to the Lehi Hospital where h e di ed a few hours later on October 22, 1924 at the age of 64.
After all her children were married Grandma Polly went to live with he r d aughter, Mabel, who at the time lived in Ogden, Utah and later in Pen dlet on, Umatilla County, Oregon. She died in Pendleton on October 15, 19 44 an d was buried in the Lehi Cemetery beside her husband.

Joseph married Polly Frances Harmon on 19 May 1882 in Holden, Millard, Utah, United States. S h e married David McKee October 14, 1887, and lived on Main Street in Hol de n, Millard County, Utah. She raised a large family and worked in the R eli ef Society. She was kind and very considerate of everyone and had man y fr iends. She died April 15, 1942 in Holden, Utah and is buried in th e Holde n Cemetery.

JESSE HUNTSMAN GILES
FROM HIS DIARY

Jesse Huntsman Giles was born Dec. 31, 1868, in Holden, Utah; son of Jo s eph Sinkler and Sarah Huntsman Giles. His father had been in Johnston’ s A rmy as a surgeon, and later joined the Mormon Church.
The father, Joseph Sinkler Giles also taught school in Holden. Jesse we n t to the first grade of school in Holden. Later he came to Fillmore t o at tend the Millard Academy, taught by Alma and Joshua Greenwood, two g radua tes from the Brigham Young Academy.
Since Jesse and his sister had to come to Fillmore to attend the Milla r d Academy, the father, Joseph Sinkler decided to move to Fillmore.
The Giles family rented the home of William Goulter, which was just a li t tle over a block from the Abraham Carling family home. Jesse Giles an d Em eline Carling walked to school together and studied together, and so on th ey were deciding on a wedding day.
Emeline was born September 15, 1870, the daughter of Abraham Freer an d A nn Ashman Carling. She and Jesse were married in the Manti Temple Aug us t 27, 1890, by Anthony H. Lund.
Jesse and Emeline moved their few belongings to Oak Creek where Jesse b e gan teaching school the first week in September. It was lonely for Emel in e with Jesse in school all day, but she managed to get to Fillmore o n a f ew visits when some one from Oak Creek went to Fillmore to get a lo ad o f grain ground into flour. The first child of Jesse and Emeline wa s bor n Sept. 4, 1891, whom they named Hazel.
When school closed they moved to Fillmore, and Jesse herded sheep for S a m Bennett of Holden. Jesse enjoyed herding sheep as he had plenty of ti m e to read and study. Jesse spent his extra time getting an education wh il e herding sheep. The sheep took very little of Jesse’s time except a t lam bing time when the bobcats ate the little lambs, unless the herde r kept c lose watch on the mother sheep and her lambs. Jesse always had s everal sh eep dogs, which were trained to kill bobcats.
That fall, Jesse went to Leamington to teach school. Richard Russell al s o taught near Leamington therefore, he rode back and forth to and fro m Fi llmore with Jesse and Emeline. John Kelly, a very prominent educato r in M illard County was chairman of the Board of Education. On January 2 7, 1893 , a second daughter was born to Jesse and Emeline, and they name d her Ann ie Lee.
Although Jesse was a schoolteacher most of the time. He was also an exc e llent mechanic and electrician. He installed the electrical wiring fo r ma ny of the homes in Fillmore. His son Herbert worked with him some o f th e time. Herbert was a mechanic, contractor and carpenter.
Jesse taught school at Fillmore, Beaver, Minerville, and St. John in To o le County. He and Emeline were blessed with nine children. We have alre ad y named two of them; Hazel and Annie Lee both born in Fillmore. The ot he r seven are as follows: Maggie, born Dec. 9, 1895, in Fillmore: Herber t , born Feb. 23, 1898, in Fillmore; Valeta, born May 22, 1901, in Salin a , Utah; Robert Carling, born Feb. 23, 1903, in Fillmore ;
Forest LeRoy, born July 7, 1906, in Fillmore, Utah; Roma, born June 29 , 1 909, Fillmore; Joseph, born July 21, 1911. Emeline died following th e bir th of her ninth baby, July 21, 1911 and is buried in the Fillmore c emeter y. Jesse was working in the Lehi Roller Mills when his wife Emelin e died . He immediately moved back to Fillmore, with his family, as he ha d live d here most of his life.
In 1919 he moved to Ogden where he met and married Alice Rogers. He ser v ed a two-year mission for the Mormon Church from 1927-28 to the Easter n S tates.
Jesse and his second wife Alice Rogers Giles adopted two girls and rais e d them as their own. Jesse died November 21, 1954 and is buried besid e hi s two wives in the Fillmore Cemetery.

AND LUCY ARMINA WILSON

No written history of my paternal grandparents is available, so I, Earli n e Giles Kvist, their granddaughter, will attempt a short sketch
of my own memories, and those of my parents, Earl and Erma Giles.
Grandpa John Thomas Giles was born in Fillmore, Utah, 30 Jan 1872, the e i ghth child of Joseph Sinkler Giles and Jane Moore. Grandma Giles was bo r n to Frank Wilson and Lucy Rachel Felshaw, in Holden, Millard County, U ta h, on 19 March, 1877. Joseph Sinkler was born in West Nottingham, Ches te r County, Pennsylvania, on 5 April, 1833.
John and Armina were married in Holden, Millard County, Utah, 20 Novemb e r 1896.
Family stories tell us that Grandfather Joseph Sinkler Giles was a ver y r eligious man, once he was introduced to the teachings of the Church o f Je sus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Grandfather, John Thomas, was a lit tle r ebellious and at the tender age of fifteen years, he left home to b e on h is own, after the death of his beloved mother. She passed away aft er th e birth of her thirteenth child, Jacob, on April 5, 1881, in Holden , Utah . The baby died the same day.
Grandfather Joseph Sinkler remarried, and John Thomas soon left his boyh o od home.
John Thomas met and married Lucy Armina Wilson. He was twenty four yea r s old, and she was just nineteen. Their first child, Frank Elwin, die d a t just fifteen months of age. He was born and died in Holden, Utah .
They moved around the west a lot in the next few years, according to t h e birthplaces of their children. Claud was born in 1899 in Holden, the n E lva Jeanne came along in 1903, in Annabelle, Sevier County, Utah, whi ch i s just outside of Richfield, Utah.
Joseph Clayton was born in Star Valley, Elko County, Nevada in 1906.
. Dolly Kathleen and Earl were born in TownCreek, Nevada in 1908 and 191 1 . Perry and Madge came to them back in Holden, in 1915 and 1918. That c om pleted their family.
John Thomas obtained work for Kennecott Copper Company in McGill, Whit e P ine County, Nevada. They lived with the sheriff until a rental home b ecam e available. He was responsible to drive horse teams and care for ho rse s as his job.
I do not know how many years they lived in McGill, where the children co u ld attend school. They moved to a little ranch, which was a homestead t ha t they improved by building a log house of three rooms, a kitchen, bi g fa mily room, and a small bedroom. It was
about seventeen miles from McGill, Nevada. The bathroom was up the hill.
The children attended school in McGill for elementary, which went to t h e 8th grade. My Dad only finished the eighth grade, like most of the bo y s of that time. They were needed to work on the ranch. Times were ver y ha rd, and they had to live off their own industry.
The kitchen had a great big iron cookstove with a hot water tank on on e e nd. The sink had only cold running water, so water must be heated eve ry s ingle day, winter or summer. There was no electricity,
so light was by coal oil lamps. My grandmother was such a hard worker , a long with her husband and children. She churned her own butter, and b ake d the best homemade bread. I can still remember to taste of that brea d af ter 70 plus years.
She baked nearly every day to feed her growing family. She also made gr e at pies and cakes with fruits she had canned on that big stove in the m id dle of the summer. Imagine the heat in that little house in July. Sh e als o had to iron with heavy iron flat irons which were heated on top o f th e stove. She had two of them, so one was heating while the other wa s in u se. They were really heavy.
She also made quilts with the wool from Grandpas’ sheep. She would was h i t and card it after Grandfather would shear them. She sewed the littl e bl ocks together by hand until she got a new treadle sewing machine. Wh a t a time saver that was. She and my mother made some quilts together, a n d I still have two of them, although they are very ragged, her work i s st ill here.
I spoke to Aunt Madge by phone this week, and she gave me a little mor e i nformation on her father John Thomas Giles.
She was only two years old when the family left Holden and moved to McGi l l, Nevada,
John Thomas would haul the ore from the pit at Ruth to the concentrat o r in McGill by horse and wagon teams. Grandpa was in charge of about fi v e teams. One day he saw a man whipping his horse, and he grabbed the wh i p away, and said “You never whip a horse or touch a woman,
or you will answer to God.” The fellows working with him said, “You won ’ t answer to God, you’ll answer to John Giles.”

The family lived with the sheriff in McGill until their rental house w a s built and ready for them to move into. They lived in McGill for sever a l years, until Grandpa became ill, and then they homesteaded the ranc h wh ere the children were raised.

Dad told me of an incident in his youth which showed me the tender sid e o f Grandpa
Giles. The boys would go to work in the summer for the sheepherders in t h e valley. Dad was
about sixteen, and he had been in the mountains all summer, away from ho m e. They had to walk
back to the ranch, and as he came up the last little hill before reachi n g the ranch, his Dad spotted him coming, and ran to meet his boy. The y sh ared a big bear hug, and tears of joy at being to-
gether again. The Giles Clan was a very close-knit family .

John Thomas Giles was born with a natural gift for music. He could pla y a ny instrument
that he could put his hands on. He would play in the band for the danc e s that were common in
McGill and Ely. He played piano, fiddle and harmonica.. Grandma Giles wo u ld stand beside him and hold the harmonica. He was also a great step da nc er. Mother said he was the best.

When Gae was little, he used to put her up on the big round dining tabl e , and dance around the table with her. Aunt Madge told me that he did t h e same thing with me, as soon as I
could walk, up on the table I would go to dance with Grandpa. I have n o m emory of this, but I was so happy to hear about it. Aunt Madge said i t ma de the ladies clear the table in a hurry so the dancing could begin.

My childhood memory of him was kind of scary. He was not too well, an d w e would chase in and out of the house, playing tag or some other nois y ga me with our cousins. He
would holler, “Don’t slam the door.”, and we paid but little heed to h i s words in our childish

He raised lots of animals, horses, cows, pigs, chickens and ducks. The y h ad a nice duck pond fairly near to the house. They had a large garde n als o, and so there was always plenty of food at Grandmas’ table. She m ade wo nderful gooseberry pies and jam.

Once Grandpa put me on his great, big white work horse. He was so big, a n d I cried till
they put me down. That was the only time in my life I was ever on a hors e . I am afraid of them
to this very day.

Grandpa had a tiny little room that was up the hill a little ways from t h e house. No one was allowed in there, but we, as curious children will , w ould peek in the window. He had a small cot and a stack of old paper s an d magazines inside. It was his quiet, private place, and
off limits to every one but him.

Grandma had a gas powered wringer washing machine on her back porch. I f e ll on the
fan type blades on the washer when I was just a tiny girl, and it spli t m y head open, just above the right eyebrow. My little green dress wa s cove red in blood, and off we went to McGill to the
doctors office for stitches. I still have a small scar.

My memories of the days at the ranch are very precious to me. I rememb e r being loved by a lot of aunts, uncles and cousins. Jack Cobb was th e el dest, Then Gae and Bonnie Giles, Harvey Cobb was the fourth and I wa s th e fifth. I don’t have the birthdates of all the other cousins, bu t Larr y Giles, Janice Munson, JoAnne Giles, Leon Giles, Carolyn Giles we re amon g
the next group to join the Giles Clan. Then came Tom Giles, Marilyn Gile s , David and Dennis
Giles, Linda Giles, Roger Giles, Pat and Ward Munson, followed b y Dorot h y Giles, and then
Nancy, Victor and Victoria Giles. Twenty two grandchildren were born in t o the family, but not all of them were privileged to know their grandpa re nts. Being one of the eldest has been a real blessing to me, as I kne w th em all. My aunts and uncles have always been very dear to me, even
though I would contact them only once a year at Christmas, I thought o f t hem a great deal in my walks down memory lane .

These dear Grandparents welcomed all of us into their humble home, and g a ve us a great
example of family togetherness and love. I will never forget those dinne r s at the ranch with so many people that became so dear to me throughou t m y life.

After the death of Grandpa Giles, Grandma moved into McGill. Gae use d t o do work for
her, and when I get more information, I will share it with you.

I'm the granddaughter of Eve Lynn Southern, Selena's youngest daughte r . My grandma always told us stories of her mother. But one I'll neve r f orget is after my grandma, Eve, was born people didn't think Selena w oul d be able to take care of another baby because she was blind. I thin k i t was Eve's aunt who sat on the porch of Selena's house and made sur e n o one came in to take that new baby. My family is full of strong, ama zin g women who inspired me that no matter what our trials are we can d o anyt hing!
