Westfall and six grandchildren, of Avon: on e b rother, Charles H. Carson and a sister, Margaret R Carson of Rochester - Funeral .Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the home. Obituary: JAMES DUANE CARSON PASSES ON SUDDENLY LAST FRIDAY EVENING The entire community was saddened on Friday night when word spread of t h e sudden death of Mr. James D. Carson, at about nine o'clock. Mr. Carson had been about as usual during the day and friends remarke d o n his appearing so well. He was born in Rochester, N.Y. December 28, 1850, and came to Avon whe n a bout twenty two years of age and for twenty five years was associate d wit h the late Dr. Cyrus A. Allen in the sanitarium and banking busines s. Fo llowing this, he returned to Rochester and was secretary-treasur e of th e McFarlin Clothing Company for six years, after which he retire d and mad e his home in St. Petersburg, Florida and Avon until 1913 whe n he erecte d the residence in Genesee street where he resided aat the ti me of his de ath. He was a life member of the Yonondio Lodge, Iconic Chapter and Cyrene Co m mandry of Rochester, also a member of Damascus Temple A. A. O. N. M. S . , of Rochester. Before affiliating with Yonondio Lodge he was a membe r o f the local F. & A. M., being the master for three terms. He was senior grand deacon of the Grand Lodge, F. & A. M. and in 1885 as s isted in the ceremonies at the laying of the corner stone of the Statu e o f Liberty in New York harbor. He was also a member of the Livingston County Historical Society and dur i ng the World War was president of the local Red Cross, retaining this o ff ice until his death. Since 1866 he had been a member of Brick Presbyterian Church, Rocheste r a nd was an active worker in the local Presbyterian church. He was pro mine nt in musical circles and for years led the choir in the latter chur ch . At the time of his death he was leader of the girls' vested choir , tw o members of the choir being his granddaughters. Elsewhere in this paper is a beautiful tribute to Mr. Carson by Rev. H . P . V. Bogue, paster of Central Presbyterian church when built. This i s a f ar better testimony to his activites than we could give. On January 7, 1874, Mr Carson was united in marriage to Miss Kate Whipp l e of Brockport. Rev. James B. Shaw of Brick church, assisted by Rev . D . H. Palmer of the Brockport church, performed the ceremony . Last January they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. A recept i on was held in the evening and a large circle of friends gathered at th ei r home and enjoyed the usual liberal hospitality of the couple. The survivors are his son, James D. Carson, Jr., one daughter, Mres. Jo h n L. Westfall; six grand children, Katherine and Jean Carson, Helen, Ma ry , John C. and Duane Westfall, all of Avon; one brother, Charles H. Car son , and one sister, Miss Margaret E. Carson, both of Rochester . The funeral was held from his late home in Genesee street, Monday aftern o on at 2:00 o'clock. Rev H. P. V. Bogue, Rev. C. N. Frost, D. D., and R ev . M. D. MacLeod, past and present pastors of the Central Presybteria n chu rch, officiated. Burial was made in Mt. Hope cemetery, Rochester. The bearers were Stanley Rash of Rochester, J. F. Kellogg, Dr. F. L. Dur k ee, H. A. Stelley, O.H. Gott and James Brisee of Avon. The funeral was largely attended, friends and neighbors from every stati o n of life being there. He was completely surrounded with flowers, fo r al l knew his love for them and their loving tribute was expressed in t his m anner. The business places closed during the service . Mr. Carson was deeply interested in all activities pertaining to the soc i al and civic welfare of the village, and though not always actively eng ag ed in promoting the projects, he contributed generously and his influe nc e was always felt. His life is indeed a monument. His happy smile and hearty welcome wil l b e missed.
