- Obituary:
Dr. Robert J. Gallagher, 63, a native of Waseca, died at the Blue Eart h h ospital at 9:10 a.m. Sunday. He had been in failing health for the pa st f ive years but it was only within recent weeks that his trouble was d iagno sed as cancer. He was taken to Rochester from the Blue Earth hospit al Dec . 12 and returned to Blue Earth December 18. Funeral services wil l be hel d Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. from the Catholic church in Blue Earth. T he Very R ev. Max Satory will conduct the service and burial will be in t he Catholi c cemetery at Blue Earth.
Dr. Gallagher was born in Waseca, August 6, 1891, a son of Mr. and Mrs . B ernard M. and Catherine Barden Gallagher. He grew to manhood in thi s comm unity, played baseball with his brothers on the Waseca club, and g raduate d from Sacred Heart high school in 1912. He continued his educati on at Cr eighton University, Omaha, Neb., graduating from the college o f dentistr y in 1915. Immediately following his graduation he establishe d a practic e at Blue Earth, which had been his home ever since. He was m arried in 19 17 to Miss Zoa Freer of Blue Earth. During World War I he se rved as a Lie utenant in the Medical Corps. He took an active and a promi nent part in t he civic affairs of the Blue Earth community. He served ma ny years on th e board of education, was Democratic county chairman for 2 0 years, comman der of the American Legion, a director in the Blue Eart h Building and Loa n Assn., member of the Faribault County Fair board an d district deputy o f the Knights of Columbus. He established a reputatio n as an after dinne r speaker and as a toastmaster, which took him to mos t functions in Blu e Earth and the neighboring communities of that area.
Tragedy struck the Gallagher home twice in the span of a very few year s . A son, Robert, playing on the Blue Earth basketball team was taken i l l after one of the school games, and died within a few days. A second s on , Mark, broke through the ice of the Blue Earth river and drowned. Th e tr agedies were a great blow to the parents. Dr. Gallagher was never ab le t o banish the great loss from his mind.
Dr. Gallagher is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Richard (M a rgaret) Hoffman, Washington, D.C.; and Mrs. William (Marie Frances) Vos le r, Albert Lea. Also surviving are three brothers, Hon. H. M. Gallagher , A ssociate Justice Frank T. Gallagher and Dr. B. J. Gallagher, all of W asec a. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Gallagher, a sister, Mrs. Joh n (Rose lla) Cunningham, and a brother, Joseph, preceded him in death.
