      He was hired as a clerk in the office of the Rutland and Burlington rail r oad in Rutland in 1860. In 1871 he became general freight and ticket ag en t for the New London Northern road. I n 1872-3 he was general agent o f th e Vt. division of the Portland and Ogdensburg road. From 1873 to 188 3, th e time of its absorption by the Central Vermont road, Charles was g enera l freight agent of the New London Northern road. In 1883, he becam e super intendent of the New London division of the Central Vermont whic h positio n he held until he retired in 1893. He also served as a directo r of the N ational Bank of Commerce. The family lived in Rutland and St . Johnsbury , Vermont; and later in New London, Conn. Charles died at hi s residence a t 330 State Street, New London, Connecticut, the result o f a hemorrhage , 8 July 1901 (age 63) From his obituary: “His life was a n example of wha t some men of push can do, working himself up from a min or position, by c lose attention to duties, to one of gr eat importance . He was a brother o f the late Ozro Ives Spaulding of Proctorsville, an d leaves beside his wi fe, one son, Elmer H., Superintendent of Mill No . 1 of the Brainard & Arm strong Silk Company. Mr. Spaulding was interre d at Elm Grove cemetery, My stic, Connecticut. ”
