- Obituary:
Dorothy Peterson O'Neil, age 78, died April 28, 1998 at her home in Vern a l, Utah. She was born June 23, 1920 in Provo, UT to John Harry and Este ll a Clayton Peterson.
She spent her early life in Idaho Falls, Idaho and Missoula, Montana whe r e she graduated from Montana County High School. Following graduation f ro m the University of Montana in 1941 she was on the faculty of the Univ ers ity as Acquisitions Librarian for three years. During World War II sh e se rved in the WAVES as a Lt.J.G. in the code room of the Twelfth Nava l Dist rict in San Francisco.She married C. Brian O'Neil of Kaysville, U T on Feb ruary 14, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple. After the war they move d to Verna l to become distributors of the Salt Lake newspapers in the Ui ntah Basi n for 40 years. In addition they owned and operated the Credi t Bureau o f Vernal for 27 years and she served as President of the Assoc iated Credi t Bureaus of Utah. She was active in community affairs, she w as a membe r of the Selective Service Board, Key Leader in the 4-H progra m and presi dent of the Central School PTA. Teaching and training youth w as importan t to her. She guided her children and their friends for man y years in th e 4-H program and in Cub Scouting or Scouting, for which sh e was awarde d the Silver Fawn (Beaver) Award in 1973. Her life was one o f service, pa rticularly in the LDS Church, as President of the Uintah St ake YWMIA an d of Vernal Third Ward Relief Society, Secretary of the Uint ah Stake an d glines Stake Relief Societies, Secretary of the Vernal Thir d Ward Youn g Women, Stake Cub Scout Director and New Scout Leader. Durin g 1987-88 sh e and her husband served in the Scotland Edinburg mission wh ere he was bi shop of the Inverness ward. They also served a Glines Stak e mission. The y enjoyed traveling and were able to visit many countrie s of the world wh ere they formed friendships that continued with corresp ondence afterward.
She is survived by her husband C. Brian, of Vernal; children: Peggy (Dar w in) Wareing, Blackfoot, Idaho; Brenda (Kenneth) French, Glendale, CA; M ar ilyn (Preston) Crofts, Westland, MI; Michael (Debra) O'Neil, South Pas ade na, CA; Connie (Gene) Dye, Roy, UT; Kelly (Judi) O'Neil, Vernal, UT . Sh e is survived by 25 grandchildren; a brother, John H. Peterson, Jr , of Bo untiful, UT; and a sister, Arlene Martinn, Wenatchee, Washington . She wa s preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth Romney, Tempe , AZ; an d twin grandsons.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 3, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the G l ines Stake Center, 475 West 100 South. Friends may call on Sunday eveni n g at the Hullinger-Jolley Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. and on Monday fro m 9 :45-10:45 at the Stake Center. Interment will be in the Vernal Memori al P ark under the direction of the Hullinger-Jolley Funeral Home.
