- Obituary:
Karl Vernon Church 1923 ~ 2009 Karl passed away 31 July 2009. He was bo r n in St. George, Utah 29 April 1923 at the home of his maternal grandpa re nts, Warren and Mary Etta Lee Cox. He was the fourth Child of Vernon a n d Areta Cox Church.
He was raised in LaVerkin, Utah on the family dairy farm which operate d f or many years delivering milk to the east side of Washington County , incl uding to the old Zion Lodge. He graduated from Hurricane High Scho ol in 1 941. He participated in track, football, tennis, and basketball i n High S chool and at Dixie College. He was drafted into the Army in Apri l 1943 an d served as a Staff Sergeant machine gunner in the 43rd Infantr y. He serv ed in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Philippines, and Japan . He returne d the fall of 1945.
He married Grace Duncan on 12 December 1945 in the Salt Lake LDS Templ e . They are the parents of six children: Sharon (Duane) Bauer, Mace K (L il lian) Church, Chris V (Jane) Church, Dale E Church, Jeanette (Alan) Mo ss , and David W Church. They have 43 grandchildren and 75 great-grandchi ldr en. They lived in LaVerkin, Hurricane, Salt Lake City, Bountiful, Ric hfie ld, Cedar City, Sandy and since 1991 Midvale, Utah.
He was active in the LDS Church. He was a Scout Master, member of the bi s hopric, teacher, High Councilor, ward and stake Sunday School presidenc y , High Priest Quorum secretary and faithful home teacher. He worked o n th e family dairy farm until allergies and malaria, contracted during h is wa r service, necessitated a move to Salt Lake City for other employme nt. H e worked for Water Works Equipment and Pacific States Cast Iron Com pany f or 19 years, covering all of Southern Utah with the water system n eeds o f municipalities and golf courses. He took a medical retirement a t age 5 0 due to complications from the malaria and hearing loss. He wa s an avi d reader.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Pauline Church Wilso n W ulfenstein, Mildred Church, LaReta Church Gates; brothers, Richard L a V o n Church and twin brothers Warren Harvey Church and Walter Hayden C hurc h. He is survived by six children; 43 grandchildren, and 84 great-gr andch ildren. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, 7 Aug. 2009, at 10 :0 0 a .m. in the Midvale 8th LDS Ward Chapel, 8350 So Jackson St., Midva le, UT . A viewing will be held from 9:00-10:00 at the church on Friday . Buria l in the LaVerkin City Cemetery, LaVerkin, Utah, 7 Aug. 2009 at 6 :0 0 p.m . with military honors by American Legion Post # 100.
