BIOGRAPHY: "Organizer and first president of the Connecticut Peace Socie t y. ... At the first annual meeting there were in attendance a handfu l o f people, at the second annual meeting there were in attendance 5,00 0 peo ple. Meetings were held on the banks of the Mystic River and woul d last d ays. These meetings went well into the turn of the [20th] centur y, as m y grandmother remembered attending them as a young woman. ... Jon athan al so had a deaf son named Enoch that he taught to speak and read l ips. Jona than loved learning and was self educated, but found his own sy stem to te ach Enoch, who was born deaf, how to speak. The United State s had not ye t established any methods of teaching the deaf to speak, an d Enoch was co nsidered a wonderment. [Jonathan's efforts led to] the Whi pple School fo r the Deaf; ... others in this particular family opened sc hools for or wo rked as teachers for the deaf. ... Jonathan was a gentl e and beloved ma n that served as inspiration to many." --R. Gilebarto
