- SOURCE: David Jillson, "Descendants of Capt. John Whipple, of Providenc e , R.I.," New-England Historical and Genealogical Register, 32 (1878): 4 06 . Does not give maiden name.
SOURCE: Charles M. Whipple, Jr., Captain John and Sarah Whipple: A Multi g enerational Study of the First Whipple Family in America (Victoria, B.C . : Trafford, c2007), p. 194: "William Senior married Mary Ibrook about 1 70 8." (It appears that Charles identifies this individual as Mary Ibrook .)
SOURCE: Email received from Eugene Zubrinsky "While there's no doubt th a t her forename was Mary, it is highly unlikely that her maiden name wa s I brook (the misattribution of which is presumably based on the fact th at W illiam and Mary Whipple gave a son that forename). First, Richard Ib roo k (Hingham, 1635) had no sons who lived to adulthood (Robert Charle s Ande rson, _The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635 , Volum e IV, I-L_ [Boston, 2005], 1-2). And second, it was on William Wh ipple ' s side of the family that Ibrook appears, as the maiden name of h is mat ernal grandmother, Margaret (Ibrook) Tower, and the forename of he r son , Whipple's maternal uncle, Ibrook Tower (ibid., 2; Charlemagne Tow er, _T ower Genealogy: An Account of the Descendants of John Tower, of Hi ngham , Mass._ [Cambridge, Mass., 1891], 1, 47, 54-55).
Though not proved, it's probable that the Mary Whipple "of Cumberlan d " [ s et off from Attleborough in 1746/7] who married Capt. James3 Redw a y (Jo hn 2, James1) at Rehoboth on 14 April 1748 as his second wife wa s W illiam 3 W hipple's widow (Rehoboth VR, 2:266; Bristol Co. Probate Re cord s, 17:5 8-60, at 60). Her maiden name remains a mystery."
