- William Stanley “Stan” Johnson was born in Salt Lake City to William Har v ey “Bud” Johnson and Dora Neff. He grew up in the East Millcreek area w he re he attended Granite High School and the University of Utah. He serv e d a LDS mission for two years in northern Idaho. Stan became a license d a rchitect in Utah and later attained the NCARB certification, which al lowe d him to practice through¬out the United States .
The greater part of his career was spent at the University of Utah Plann i ng Department where he was involved with the expansion of the Campus a n d medical center. He concluded his architectural career working in Par k C ity for the firms of Ted Warr and Jack Johnson. After retiring from a rchi tecture in 1987, Stan became a jewelry designer and attained additio nal c ertifications from the Gemological Institute of America.
Stan enjoyed a 52-year mar¬riage to Jill Bunker Johnson, his best frie n d and lover. Stan and Jill were married in 1953 in Salt Lake City. Fro m t he mid-1950s to the late 1970s they raised their family in Bountiful , Uta h. They had three children. Kathleen, Eric and Clark who stayed ver y clos e over the years, creating a loving family environment, which com¬ forte d Stan in his final days. The Johnsons also shared 10 grand¬childre n an d six great-grandchil¬dren.
Stan was an active member of the L.D.S. Church
Park City was always a source of great enjoyment for Stan and his famil y . Stan was an avid skier who frequented Snow Park, the current site o f De er Valley, in the ’50s and early '60s. In 1965, the Johnsons purchas e d a historic miners home to use for family vacations. Park City becam e th e primary resi¬dence in 1978 where Stan and Jill lived until their r etire ment in the mid-1990s.
Stan was instrumental in the growth of Tommy Knockers Jewelry, which rec e ntly celebrated its 28th anniversary, making it one of the oldest busin es ses in Park City. His affiliations with the Park City Rotary Club, Par k C ity Artists Association, and Kimball Art Center were always a sourc e of e njoyment and accomplishment.
In the mid-1990s Stan and Jill retired, sold their home and business a n d spent several years exploring the United States in their motor home . Du ring that time, they lived part-time with their daughter Kathleen Je nsen’ s family in Sandy. They subsequently built a vacation home in Beave r Dam , Arizona where they were living at the time of Stan’s passing.
Stan passed away peacefully Jan. 19, 2005 at University Medical Cente r i n Salt Lake City after a courageous bat¬tle with pulmonary fibrosis , a ra re lung disease. The disease was diagnosed late in the summer of 2 004 an d advanced rapidly giving family and friends little time to prepar e for h is death. During his final months, Stan kept a positive men¬tal a ttitude , accepting the ultimate outcome, drawing strength from his spiri tual val ues and deep love of family.
Services for Stan included a viewing at Larkin Mortuary in Sandy. Funer a l Services were held at the LDS Granite 5th Ward at 2535 East Newcastl e D r. in Sandy followed by a graveside ser¬vice at the Park City Cemeter y.
