Ruth Watkins Benson 1916 ~ 2006 PLEASANT VIEW - Ruth Watkins Benson pa s s e d away peacefully at home Tue., Feb 7, 2006. She was born Oct. 12 , 19 1 6 i n Logan, Utah to Anna Laura Andersen and Joseph Hammond Watkin s Jr. , th e second of five children, Margaret (Richard) Owens (deceased) ; Jos e ph H. Watkins III (deceased); Mildred Watkins (deceased); and Ree d A. ( J eanet te) Watkins (Salt Lake City). Ruth attended B.Y. Trainin g School , L ogan J r. and Sr. High Schools, where she was active in ban d (Frenc h horn), orch estra (violin), special clubs (literary, social, d rama an d servic e), an d was on the honor roll. Following graduation fro m Loga n High Scho ol an d Seminary, she attended USAC (Utah State Univer sity) , receiving ho nors i n student government (class and student bod y office r), band sponso r, "Out standing Personality", Harvest (Homecomi ng) Queen , drama, etc. Sh e was af filiated as a member of Chi Omega an d Alpha Sig ma Nu. There sh e continue d her scholastic prowess and gradu ated in th e field of "Clothi ng and Text iles" with a graduate scholarsh ip to atten d the New York Scho ol of retail ing. While attending USAC a s a senior, R uth met Valdo Dunkle y Benson. The y were married March 31 , 1939 in the L ogan LDS Temple. The y are the paren ts of five children , 34 grandchildre n, 68 great-grandchil dren and two gre at-great-grandch ildren all of who m survive her. She kne w and loved each o ne. They reve red her as their c aring advocate. She an d her husband provid ed a grea t missionary legac y and example of servic e which is being carrie d on t hrough each generat ion. They lived and serv ed in South Bend, Indian a ; Logan, Utah; Carey I daho; Duesseldorf Germany; Seattle, Washington; R i verdale, ID; Calhoun , Georgia and Pleasant View, Utah. Ruth was an act iv e and faithful membe r of The Church of Jesus Ch rist of Latter-day Sa ints. She and her husban d served two missions toget her. Valdo preside d over t he Central Germa n Mission (1963-66) and they c ompleted a prose lyting miss ion in Calhoun , Georgia (Georgia, Atlanta Mis sion) in 1985/ 86. During he r marriage, R uth supported her husband as Reg ional Repres entative, origin al produce r of the Martin Harris pageant, Mi ssion Pres ident, Stake Presid ent, Bis hop and Branch President. Include d in her p ersonal service are Og den Te mple worker, Relief Society presid ent an d teacher, Stake Relief Soc iet y presidency, board member, Young Wo men' s presidency and teacher, prim a ry leader and visiting teacher wher e sh e left an abiding impression o f l ove and service. Her associates thr ou gh all of this service continu e to b e cherished friends. Her church , f amily and friends were her focu s. She w as unusually selfless with a n inn ate ability to care for others . She is s urvived by their five chi ldren, Lauralie (Gary) Tanner, Pleasa nt View, UT; John (Kathleen), St. G eorge, UT; Ralph (Louise), Bountiful , UT; Rebecc a (Steven) Smith, Boise , ID, presently presiding over the Ru ssia, Novosib irsk Mission; JoAnn ( Rex) Steele, Riverdale, ID, all grandc hildren, grea t grandchildren, gre at g reat grandchildren and one brother . She was prece ded in death by h er hus band, parents and three siblings . Funeral service s will be hel d Mon., Fe b. 13, 2006 at 12:00 noon in th e Pleasant View Sec ond Ward C hapel, 250 W. Elberta Drive, with Bishop Ri ck Woods conducting. There wi ll be a view ing Sun. evening from 6 to 8 p. m. at Myers Mortuary, 845 Wa shington Blvd. and Mon. at the church from 1 0 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior t o services. I nterment will be in the Logan C ity Cemetery Mon. 3: 30 p.m . In lieu of fl owers, donations may be made t o the LDS Church Missi ona ry Fund or Perpet ual Education Fund.
