- Obituary:
POCATELLO - James R. "Jay" Nielsen left this life after a lengthy illnes s . He was always patient, kind and grateful for all that was done for hi m , he was "Terrific."
He was born February 5, 1927, in Preston, Idaho, to Harvey James and Alm e da Rawlings Nielsen. He grew up in Vallejo, California. After high scho ol , Jay served in World War II as a Merchant seaman on ships that transp ort ed materials to the servicemen in the Pacific. Gen. Douglas MacArthu r sai d, "I hold no branch higher esteem than the Merchant Marine Service ."
On April 17, 1946, Jay married his high school sweetheart, Dawna Willia m s in the Logan LDS Temple. They have had a happy and eventful 66 year s to gether. He was an active and faithful member of the LDS Church.
Jay loved music and sports. He was a football star in high school and al s o played the trombone in the school orchestra and in the dance bands . H e had a beautiful bass voice and sang in quartets and choirs. While h e wa s on his mission he sang with the 1947 "Centennial Chorus" touring a nd gi ving concerts in the Eastern States Mission.
Jay worked as a salesman and businessman most of his life. He had his o w n company, "City Typewriter Service." His greatest joy came from a clo s e knit family, which consists of four sons and a daughter and their mat es , 37 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren with two more due soon.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings, brothe r s, Von, Theral, and Melvin, sisters, Adele Denton and Ruth Jones, a so n , Harvey James, two grandsons, Clifford and James Nielsen. He is surviv e d by his wife, Dawna; his children, Lorin (Candice), Arimo, Mark (Carol yn ), West Jordan, Utah, Denise (Michael) Kelly, South Bend, Indiana, Ja y (A nita), Fredericksburg, Virginia; and two special people, Della Thoma son a nd Marsha Thornock.
The funeral for Jay will be held on Thursday, August 9, at 11 a.m. at t h e Holman LDS Ward Chapel at 4890 Whitaker. A viewing will be held Wedne sd ay evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilks Funeral Home located on West Chub buc k Road. There will also be a viewing held one hour before the funeral . In terment will follow services at the Marsh Center Cemetery near Arimo .
