- Obituary:
Shirley Ann (Stratton) Jones, beloved wife to Jack (d. 1952) and Sam ( d . 1992) and cherished mother to Jan, Dalton, LeiAnne, and Tim (d. 2003 ) a nd best friend to all she knew, died Saturday, April 7, 2012.
Shirley was a native Arizonan, born in May 27, 1927, in Show Low and liv e d most of her life in the White Mountains. She fulfilled her life’s amb it ion for nearly 50 years as a nurse and then nurse practitioner. The la s t 30s of her career she worked in Whiteriver, caring for the Apache peo pl e she loved so dearly. Shirley never met a stranger. Within minutes o f me eting someone she was getting your story and learning all about you , wher e you were from, who your parents were, how many children you have , etc . and then before you knew it you were being invited to dinner at h er hou se. Then she would call regularly just to make sure you were OK. “ She gen uinely thought of her friends as a gift that she needed to cheris h and nu rture, but we all knew she was the real gift to us.”
Shirley’s family loved her beyond words or measure, and will miss her fo r ever. Her husbands, Homer Jackson Howard Jr., Sam B. Jones Jr., and a s o n Tim C. Jones preceded her in death.
She is survived by three of her children: Janice Lynne (Howard Jones) Br e nner and her husband Richard of Tucson, and their two children Tony o f Ba ltimore, Md. and Beth also of Tucson, Dalton Jones and his wife Kell ey o f Arvada, Colo., and their two children Lauren and Kyle of Ft. Colli ns, C olo., and LeiAnne Jones, of Phoenix. She is also survived by her tw o sist ers, Erna (Stratton) Cates of Winslow, and LaJuana Stratton of Mes a, an d her two brothers, Phil Z. Stratton and his wife Donna of Mesa, an d Le w Doyle Stratton, and his wife Sandi, of Escondido, Calif., as wel l as ma ny, many Stratton, Whipple, Jones and Howard in-laws, nieces, nep hews, an d cousins as well as her many long-time friends. Shirley’s famil y would l ike to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and kind word s. We hav e always loved Shirley, but to come to know how many people sh e touched w ith her kindness, her love and heartfelt passion for helpin g others make s the deep sorrow we feel a little less painful.
To honor Shirley’s life, her family will be holding a family visitatio n f rom 9-9:45 a.m. for those whom would like to pay their condolences t o th e family prior to the service, and the memorial service will begin a t 1 0 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Pinetop-Lakeside Stake Center of Th e Ch urch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1520 Church Lane in Lakes ide . A luncheon will begin at 1 p.m. at the Blue Ridge High School Cafet eria , 1200 West White Mountain Boulevard in Lakeside. Please join her fa mil y in celebrating Shirley’s life and mourning her passing by wearing s omet hing red, Shirley’s favorite color.
