- Obituary:
James Dale Miller of Provo, Utah died of natural causes at age 92 Saturd a y May 9, 2015. Dale was born February 22, 1923 in Penrose Utah to Jame s H enry Miller and Amanda Lee Schuman. As a Child, Dale helped on the fa mil y farm and attended a small community school house in Garland Utah. A fte r high school, Dale attended Brigham Young University but left his st udie s to enlist in the US Army. He was deployed to the Pacific Theater s eein g combat in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Final Assault on Japan.
After World War II, Dale returned to Brigham Young University, where h e w as a track sprinting star. At BYU he graduated with a bachelor’s degr ee i n Education and met his first wife, Ramona Smith. After serving an L DS mi ssion together in France, the couple began a family of 2 boys an d 2 girls . After receiving a PhD from Michigan State University, Dale to ok a posit ion with the US State Department and was deployed to Mexico Ci ty as a For eign Service Officer. When it was time for the older childre n to attend h igh school, the family relocated to Provo, Utah where Dal e worked as a pr ofessor at Brigham Young University. After 32 years of m arriage his wif e Ramona passed away suddenly.
Dale later met Geraldine Andrews at an LDS Church function. They becam e i nstant sweethearts, married, and lived in Provo, Utah for 35 years. D al e and Geraldine had a large combined extended family and were surround e d by many loved ones through their retirement years. The highlight of t he ir golden years was serving an LDS mission to Southern California.
Dale loved to travel and was an avid history buff. He published multip l e professional language texts, and several human-interest books. Dale w a s known for his devotion to the LDS faith, casual humor, kind demeanor , a ctive lifestyle, ability to fix anything, and proclivity to share hom e-gr own fruit and garden vegetables with his entire neighborhood.
Dale is survived by his wife Geraldine, 8 children, 31 grandchildren, ov e r 100 great-grandchildren, many more great-great-grandchildren, and a h os t of friends.
A memorial service will take place at 10 am on Saturday May 30, 2015 a t t he Edgemont 6th Ward of the LDS Church on 4000 N 650 East Provo, U T 8 460 4.
