Ruth Bock, age 88, of Spring Valley, Wisconsin died Tuesday, February 2 0 , 2007, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home, Elmwood, Wisconsin.
Ruth Mildred Betterley was born April 3, 1918 to Joseph Whipple Betterl e y and his wife, Clara (Abel) Betterley. She was born in the village o f El mwood, Wisconsin on Scott Street where she grew to womanhood. As a s mal l child, she was baptized at the Methodist Episcopal Church by Rev. B lish . She attended Sunday School there from grades one through twelve an d wa s a member of the youth organizations and choir. She was confirmed i n 193 2 by Rev. Samuel Beers.
After attending the Elmwood School she graduated with the Elmwood High S c hool Class of 1936. The following year, along with several of her class ma tes, she attended the newly installed Shorthand Class at the Elmwood S cho ol. The following school year she attended Rasmussen Business Schoo l in S t. Paul, Minnesota, taking the Secretarial Course.
In June of 1938 Ruth became engaged to Lawrence William Bock of Hatchvil l e. They were untied in marriage the following year on June 12, 1939 b y Re v. Nulton, at the Elmwood Methodist Church. They made their home o n the B ock Farm near Hatchville. Two beloved sons were born to this unio n: Davi d Jerome and Jeffrey Glen.
Before her marriage and some time after she substituted in the Elmwood C r eamery Office. Ruth loved school, genealogy, working with figures, poem s , books and music. She especially loved the two years of Latin she too k i n high school, which left her with a life-long interest in the huge p erce ntage of English words derived from Latin.
Treasured memories of growing up in the little village of Elmwood stay e d with Ruth her entire lifetime.
Preceding her in death were her parents; half brother Vernice Schill; br o thers: Melvin and Ralph Betterley; sister-in-law Jane Betterley; nephe w J oe Betterley.
Survivors include her husband Lawrence Bock of Spring Valley; 2 sons: Da v id (Lori) Bock of Minong, Wisconsin; and Jeff (Nona) Bock of River Fall s ; 3 grandchildren: Jeremiah Bock and fiancé Cassidy Heaton; Jessica (Ni ck ) Sargent; and Jenny Bock; sister-in-law Alice Betterley of Iowa City , Io wa; nieces and nephews: Ann Marie (Jim) Donia of St. Charles, Illino is; N ancy (Mike) Maxwell of Mission Diego, California; Richard Betterle y of Bo ynton Beach, Florida; Sandy Mrozek of Long Prairie, Minnesota; an d Nola ( Clarence) Schuch of Madison, Wisconsin; other relatives and frie nds.
Visitation was on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring V a lley. Funeral service was on Friday, February 23, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. a t S t. John's Lutheran Church-Hatchville of rural Spring Valley. Rev. Sha wn K auffeld officiated the service. Music was provided by organist Bar b Freib erg with congregational singing. Burial was in St. John's Luthera n Cemete ry, Weston Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin.
Pallbearers were Ruth's sons and their wives: David and Lori, and Jeff a n d Nona; and Ruth's niece Ann Marie and her husband Jim Donia.
