Margie's hospitalization January 14, 2011.

The evening of January 14, 2011 I had gone to the viewing of Ethel Hende r son. I came back home at about eight o'clock and Margie was talking o n th e phone to Kay. I was sitting at the computer in my office at 8:30 a nd he ard a very faint sound “help me, help me, help me. I went to the h ead o f the stairs and looked down the stairs into the family room and Ma rgie w as lying at the foot of the stairs in a semi-conscious state. I pu t my ri ght hand under her head to try to hold her and all she could sa y was I' m going to die. I tried to reassure her that she would be okay b ut I real ized she was in a grave situation. I called Kay and Chad to com e over s o that we could take her to the emergency room. She was give n a cat sca n and it was determined that blood had formed at the front o f her brain . It was determined that she should be life-flighted to the U niversity o f Utah Hospital in Salt Lake, however the weather was horribl e. It was th en decided to take her by ambulance; that they did at 11:4 5 PM. While i n the ER I asked Chad to give her a blessing, I will ever b e so gratefu l for his worthiness to give this blessing.

Kay and I headed for Salt Lake the next morning which was a Friday. Tra c i was there when we arrived at the hospital and she stayed all Friday a n d Saturday. Margie was having a difficult time during Friday and also d ur ing Friday night into Saturday morning. Kay stayed in the room Frida y nig ht and slept from 4 AM to 6 AM. She stayed the first three nights F riday , Saturday, and Sunday. Each day we saw some improvement in Margi e whic h was very encouraging. Monday was a holiday, and Kay and Mikki ne eded t o be back on Tuesday for school. Tracy made arrangements to stay w ith yo u Monday night, however things had improved enough so that I didn' t thin k it was necessary for her to be there during the night. Kay an d I left t o go back to Pocatello at 3 PM on Monday. One of the doctors c alled me a t home on Tuesday at 8 AM and told me of the respiratory probl em that ha d occurred about 4:00 AM. Margie had stopped breathing and he r heart stop ped for 45 seconds. They did CPR and then didn't think ther e would be an y brain damage, however they thought this would set you bac k two or thre e days. You were unconscious for a total of nine days

They were planning on getting you out of and NCCU on Monday or Tuesday.

Thursday morning they took off the oxygen and the feeding tubes and go t M argie out of bed. They had her standing up but had a very hard time b reat hing. The anesthesiologist came in and tried to get a 7 1/2 cm instr umen t down her throat. He was able to do that days earlier, but couldn' t ge t the 7 1/2 cm or a 7 cm instrument in her. He could only get a 6 1/ 2 c m instrument in her throat. Her throat was swollen so getting air fro m he r lungs through your throat was difficult. They had to put tubes bac k int o her and that was very difficult for her.

Friday morning she was very alert however she did have some pneumonia a n d was given an antibiotic for that. Saturday they took oxygen tubes ou t b ut still had some swelling in the throat. She was improving. She doe s no t remember anything about the first nine days of being hospitalized.

Marjorie Pay Hinckley, wife of President Gordon B. Hinckley, passed aw a y at home at 5:05 p.m. on 6 April 2004. President Hinckley and other fa mi ly members were with her at the time. She died of causes incident to a ge.

Identified by her husband as the lodestar of their family, Marjorie Hinc k ley gently guided her children with faith, intelligence and humor. He r ha ppiest role in life was that of a supportive wife and mother.

Born Marjorie Pay on 23 November 1911, in Nephi, Utah, she was the fir s t child of Phillip LeRoy and Georgetta Paxman Pay. She had four sister s a nd two brothers, but one brother died in infancy. The family moved t o Sa l t Lake City in 1914 where Marjorie began her education. She gradua ted f rom East High School in 1929 and went to work at the Owens Illinoi s Glas s Company performing secretarial duties.

As a young girl she was taught by her mother that the best husband for h e r would be one who loves the Lord. Marjorie met a young man with that q ua lification living right across the street from her family home. She an d G ordon B. Hinckley were married on 29 April 1937 in the Salt Lake Temp le b y Elder Stephen L. Richards, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Ap ostle s of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (President Hi nckle y was called to serve as an Assistant to the Twelve Apostles in Apr il 195 8, to the Quorum of the Twelve in September of 1961 and became th e Presid ent of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 13 Mar ch 1995).

The young couple began their married life in Salt Lake City in a small f a rmhouse in Millcreek. President Hinckley was employed at Church headqua rt ers in downtown Salt Lake, and Marjorie continued her employment at th e g lass company until the birth of their first Child. As the family incr ease d in size, the Hinckleys built a home on property down the lane fro m thei r first house, still in the rural East Millcreek area. By 1954 the y wer e parents of five children, Kathleen, Richard, Virginia, Clark an d Jane.

Marjorie was an energetic mother and made good use of humor to settle ma n y of life's difficulties. She was often heard to say, "The only way t o ge t through life is to laugh your way through it." Marjorie loved bein g a m other and delighted in every moment with her children. She especial ly enj oyed the sound of the screen door slamming as the children ran i n and ou t of the house. She was sad every fall when the children went ba ck to sch ool because she missed them so much during the day.

An avid reader, Marjorie encouraged her children to gain knowledge by st u dying and reading. As the family traveled in the car on vacations, sh e wo uld read to them from the classics. Although her formal education wa s int errupted by economic stress during the depression, she encouraged h er chi ldren to seek degrees in higher education. She was a student of th e scrip tures and often used the words of ancient and latter-day prophe t s to tea ch and inspire others.

Living in Utah most of her life, except for a brief time in Denver whi l e her husband was working for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, Marjo ri e had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the world. Sh e dev eloped a special appreciation for the people in the Far East. Hon g Kong b ecame a favorite city, and she was delighted when her children a nd thei r spouses were able to gather in Hong Kong with her and Presiden t Hinckle y to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

A dedicated student of the lives of her ancestors, Marjorie delighte d i n the opportunity to share stories of their faith and devotion take n fro m her research and that of others. Searching for family names in ge nealog ical facilities was a major part of her life. Pedigree charts, pic tures a nd written histories were often visible in her home, and she use d this ac quired knowledge to encourage others in numerous public address es.

She developed a close relationship with her 25 grandchildren and 41 gre a t -grandchildren, who always knew she was just a telephone call away. T he y willingly consulted with her about the joys and challenges in thei r liv es.

Marjorie Hinckley was recognized numerous times, having named for her t h e Marjorie Pay Hinckley Chair in Social Work and Social Science from Br ig ham Young University in April of 2003, and receiving an honorary docto rat e of humane letters from Utah Valley State College in April of 2001 a nd t he heritage award during the centennial celebration of the Daughte r s o f Utah Pioneers that same year. 1749 Obituary:
Mr. Asbury Hull passed away at his home, 449 Greene Street, yesterday af t ernoon, at 2:30 o'clock, in the forty second year of his age.

This simple announcement carries genuine sorrow to hundreds of heart s , n o t only in this city, where the mature years of his manhood have b ee n spent, but in Athens where he was born and in other sections of th e sta te where he was well known and consequently well beloved.

Mr. Hull had not been in good health for several month but it was only s i nce last Friday that his condition has been considered serious. The fir s t news that many of his friends had of his illness was that there was b u t little likelihood of his recovery. Since that time they have made ma n y anxious inquiries as to his condition, day after day, hoping agains t ho pe, that the life of this useful citizen, genial gentleman and devot ed hu sband, son and father might be spared to the community in which hi s usefu l years had been spent. While it was realized for some time tha t there wa s but little chance of his recovery, the final announcement th at the en d had come cast a gloom over the entire city and the festivitie s seemed b ut a mockery of the common grief. He touched life at so many p oints, hi s living presence among us was felt but so recently that even y et it seem s impossible to think of him as having been called away in th e very merid ian of his manhood, and, if, indeed, it be true that to li e in the heart s of those we leave behind is not to die, his untimely tak ing off is no t death. "What seems so is transition."

Though comparatively a young man he had made a success in life, from e v e r y point of view. He entered business as the junior member of the fi r m of George S Sibley & Co, and on the death of the senior partner had s uc ceeded to the business, which he continued to conduct in such a manne r th at its high prestige in the commercial world was more than maintaine d. A t about the same time that he entered the firm he was married to Mis s Ali ce Sibley, the daughter of Mr. George R Sibley, who survives him, t ogethe r with four children, two boys and two girls. No man in Augusta wa s mor e absorbingly devoted to his family and in no home could the head o f th e household be more feelingly missed through all the years that ar e to co me. His mother, Mrs. DeSaussure Ford, and his brother, Dr. Jame s Meriwhet her Hull, also survive him.

While the deceased had never sought public preferment, honors have bee n l iterally thrust upon him. While a member of council he was chairman o f th e fire committee and was always held in the very warmest esteem by t he me mbers of the department, who found in him a warm and devoted frien d as we ll as a vigilant guardian of the best interests of the city. Late r he bec ame chairman of the police commission, and to these new duties h e carrie d the same special qualifications of mind and judgment which ren dered hi s service to the city invaluable, and the same warmth of heart w hich wo n him the devotion of every member of the police department. Th e fact tha t "Berry" Hull wanted anything done was all sufficient, asid e from any qu estion of loyalty, which was due him by reason of his posit ion.

His capacity in the business world was equally well known, and at the ti m e of his death, he was a director in the Southern railroad, in the Comm er cial Bank and in the Langley Manufacturing company. For two year s h e w a s president of the cotton exchange and they were among the mos t suc cessful in the history of the exchange.

He was graduated from Bethany College, West Virginia, and he was alwa y s a favorite in that seat of learning.

The funeral will take place on Friday morning at 11 o'clock from the Fir s t Presbyterian Church.

MR ASBURY HULL DEAD

The news of the death of Mr. Asbury Hull will be received with sincere r e gret not only throughout this community but beyond the borders of the s ta te. Everybody who knew "Berry" Hull loved his genial humor and friendl y f rankness. It is difficult for us who knew him well, and loved him, t o ass ociate death with Asbury Hull. As a boy and as a young man he was e ver fu ll of life and strength and joy. On the play-ground no boy excelle d him o n feats of strength, skill, or endurance. He was strong, manly, a ggressiv e, confident and winning. His companions admired him for his phy sical pro wess and loved him for his sunny nature and genial comradeship . In the co llege hall on the campus, in the glee club, Asbury Hull was a lways a mark ed personality and a favorite with all. Into the sterner wal ks of manhoo d he carried the sunny personality and popularity of his you th, and in th e domain of business he rapidly came into easy prominence a nd influence . In the warehouse, the exchange, the city council, the mana gement of th e city fire department, wherever his influence was exerted , he was recogn ized as a representative and useful citizen. Of sturdy ph ysique, only tho se who have been intimately thrown with him have notice d of late, the ind ication of impaired health, and the news of his sudde n collapse withi n a week has been a shock, not only to his friends, bu t the entire commun ity. It is hard to realize that the strong man, the g enial personality, t he loyal fried, the devoted son, brother, husband, a nd father, is no more .

Atlanta, Georgia, Oct 17, 1901

Under all circumstances there is nothing that so strikes upon my hear t a s does the knell of death, but when the sad intelligence of the demis e o f Berry Hull was made known to me, I paused amid the hurry of the bus y sc enes of this bustling city to think in sorrow upon his splendid pers onali ty, and a tomb like solemnity overshadowed me as reflected how flee tly, a nd yet how imperceptibly, like the gliding of vessels over the unr uffle d surfaces of placid seas, are running out the years of this, our b utterf ly existence.

Asbury Hull dead means that one of the bravest, noblest and best young m e n of this commonwealth has gone from amongst us forever; and while Augu st a is wrapped in sadness, there are many hearts throughout the south th a t beat in unison with her sorrow, for, wherever he was known, he was lo ve d. A type of the southern gentleman, inheriting the chivalry, kindline s s and the sincerity of a line of ancestors of the old southern civiliza ti on, and possessing the enterprise, public spirit and energy of the ne w or der of things, he made a man that is hard to give up and well-nigh i mposs ible to replace.

In his friendship he was sincere-to causes he espoused he was loyal; i n h is dealings with his fellow man, he was liberal but just. His heart b ea t in sympathy with those about him, and his genial disposition and bea uti ful manners drew those with whom he came in contact close to him.

Having known him in the walks of everyday life in beautiful and elegan t A ugusta, I can to a degree measure the void his passing creates, and w it h his thousands of grief stricken friends, I mingle the tear of friend shi p and the sigh of sorrow.
