He was the so n o f Edward Wanton who was a ship builder, and who became a Quaker afte r wit nessing the persecution of these people, also becoming a preacher o f tha t religion. Edward Wanton had lived in York, Maine; Boston, Massach usetts ; and Scituate, Massachusetts before coming to Rhode Island.
