    Notes:

I entered the Provo MTC on March 3, 1993 headed for the New York Rochester mission. Bucky had already gone in the MTC headed for the Dominican Republic, and so had our cousin, Matthew John Alder, headed for Texas. 3 cousins in the MTC at the same time. Is it any wonder Grandpa chose this moment to return to his heavenly home? I remember that Bucky and I were more than a little worried about leaving because we had each done significant amounts of tending Grandpa for Mom and Grandma, and were worried that Mom wouldn't get a break with us gone. But we went with faith that everything would turn out okay. March 14, Sunday, I received a message that I needed to call home, and the news of Grandpa's death was quite a shock to me. My companion, Sister Gonzales, and I went back to our room, and she sat outside the room while I took some private time inside. I knelt down and prayed and cried for some time. Sad that I wouldn't be there for the funeral, but full of faith that this was God's will for our family. As I prayed, in my mind's eye, Grandpa came to me. He stood before me strong and young, but his hair, his white beautiful head of hair was still there. He told me that he didn't remember anything about the years of senility, but that he had been told that I had contributed to taking care of him, and he was coming to say thank you. He also seemed to be in a hurry, like there were other things he needed to go do. And though he didn't say it, I was given to know that his responsibility was to watch over Matthew John, not Bucky nor I. It didn't bother me, made sense that he was to watch over his son's son, and I didn't think to ask who would watch over me. But he left me, and after that, I was okay. Heavenly Father knew I needed to hear from Grandpa, and that experience taught me a lot about how heaven works.
I miss you Grandpa. See you again, hopefully not soon.
