    • Obituary:

      Dorothy Peterson O'Neil, age 78, died April 28, 1998 at her home in Vernal, Utah. She was born June 23, 1920 in Provo, UT to John Harry and Estella Clayton Peterson.

      She spent her early life in Idaho Falls, Idaho and Missoula, Montana where she graduated from Montana County High School. Following graduation from the University of Montana in 1941 she was on the faculty of the University as Acquisitions Librarian for three years. During World War II she served in the WAVES as a Lt.J.G. in the code room of the Twelfth Naval District in San Francisco.She married C. Brian O'Neil of Kaysville, UT on February 14, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple. After the war they moved to Vernal to become distributors of the Salt Lake newspapers in the Uintah Basin for 40 years. In addition they owned and operated the Credit Bureau of Vernal for 27 years and she served as President of the Associated Credit Bureaus of Utah. She was active in community affairs, she was a member of the Selective Service Board, Key Leader in the 4-H program and president of the Central School PTA. Teaching and training youth was important to her. She guided her children and their friends for many years in the 4-H program and in Cub Scouting or Scouting, for which she was awarded the Silver Fawn (Beaver) Award in 1973. Her life was one of service, particularly in the LDS Church, as President of the Uintah Stake YWMIA and of Vernal Third Ward Relief Society, Secretary of the Uintah Stake and glines Stake Relief Societies, Secretary of the Vernal Third Ward Young Women, Stake Cub Scout Director and New Scout Leader. During 1987-88 she and her husband served in the Scotland Edinburg mission where he was bishop of the Inverness ward. They also served a Glines Stake mission. They enjoyed traveling and were able to visit many countries of the world where they formed friendships that continued with correspondence afterward.

      She is survived by her husband C. Brian, of Vernal; children: Peggy (Darwin) Wareing, Blackfoot, Idaho; Brenda (Kenneth) French, Glendale, CA; Marilyn (Preston) Crofts, Westland, MI; Michael (Debra) O'Neil, South Pasadena, CA; Connie (Gene) Dye, Roy, UT; Kelly (Judi) O'Neil, Vernal, UT. She is survived by 25 grandchildren; a brother, John H. Peterson, Jr, of Bountiful, UT; and a sister, Arlene Martinn, Wenatchee, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth Romney, Tempe, AZ; and twin grandsons.

      Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 3, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Glines Stake Center, 475 West 100 South. Friends may call on Sunday evening at the Hullinger-Jolley Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. and on Monday from 9:45-10:45 at the Stake Center. Interment will be in the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of the Hullinger-Jolley Funeral Home.
