    • •Grandmother Mary Hirst Wood. Was born May 1, 1848, in Slaithwaite, Yorkshire, England. She was the seventh child born to John Hirst (a farmer and cattle rancher, who was born January 7, 1816 in England) and Charlotte Brook (who was born 1819 in England). They settled on a farm at College Ward, near Wellsville, Utah. Their children were: Mary Alice (b. 1870), George Hirst (b. 1871), John Hirst (b. 1873), Henry Hirst (b. 1874), Joseph Hirst (b. 1876), Sarah Ellen (my mother, b. 1878), Ann (b. 1879; d. 1898), Martha Rebecca (b. 1882, d. 8 hours later), Ida Hirst (b. 1884), Ida Hirst (b. 1884), Ella Wood (b. 1885), Margaret (b. 1888), William Brook Hirst (b. 1889, d. 1902), and Olive (b. 1891). All thirteen of the children were born in Wellsville. My grandmother, Mary Hirst Wood, died in Rexburg, Idaho, on March 5, 1909, at the age of fifty. She was buried in Wellsville.

According to the writings of Veda Carlson Pixton, Mary Hirst Wood was born May 1, 1848 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England to John and Charlotte Brook Hirst. When she was four years old, some Mormon Missionaries visited her family and left a Book of Mormon to read; they recognized this as the word of God. Her parents opened their home to the missionaries and many church leaders visited.
She sailed with her family from Liverpool to Zion June 20, 1868. While on her way to Salt Lake, she fell in love with George Shaw Wood. The Hirst and Wood families had known each other well in Yorkshire before the Woods emigrated.
Mary was a gentile, refined woman, 5 foot 4 inches tall, with dark blue eyes and black hair. She died of a heart condition March 11, 1909 at age 60.

Letter written to Mary Hirst Wood from her sister, Martha Taylor:
I now tell you my secret well. I have gone to the Chapel and I have not been satisfied with their preaching, so I thought I would ask the Lord about it. Well, He sent the man (a missionary) with the book and He told me it was the truth, but I could not take it, I did not want to be a Mormon. The second time he came I told him I could not do it. He wanted me to be baptized. Well, I went to bed. I could not sleep. About three in the morning I was placed on a rock mighty and strong. I was not asleep, I was awake, there came a voice to me: “Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Lord, I send thee by my servant the true and everlasting gospel book unto me, look at my head, my hands, my feet, my side, all this I suffered for thee, Wilt thou not own me, wilt thou not obey? If thou reject this Gospel, woe be it unto thee.” Christ Himself was before me on the cross pleading with me. What could I do? I said,” I come, Oh Lamb of God, I yield.” Now, then I have told you just as it was. I don’t know what the man will say to me, I shall tell him.
      Mrs. Martha Taylor,
      West Vale, Queen Street, Halifax
      Yorkshire, England
