- Obituary:
Phyllis was born on October 10, 1917 in Lehi, Utah to Dennis and Rhoda Winifred (Winnie) Thomas Giles. The family moved to Los Angeles when Phyllis was 8 years old; Phyllis attended schools and the LDS Church in Huntington Park, CA.
On October 10 (her 21st birthday), 1938, Phyllis married her eternal sweetheart, Russell Vincent Peterson, in the Salt Lake Temple. They had been married 62 years when he passed away (2001).
Russell and Phyllis spent many years in the Los Angeles area, where they raised their 6 children (Judy, Jeannie, Jan, Julie, Russell and Rita). After moving back and forth between California and Utah for almost a decade, Russell and Phyllis moved to Utah permanently. They resided in Provo until they built their home (which Phyllis designed) in Orem.
Phyllis was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many positions (including Relief Society President, Primary President, faithful Visiting Teacher). She had a strong and vibrant testimony of Jesus Christ and His Gospel. Phyllis and her husband served in the Singapore Mission from 1984-85. They were blessed to share the Gospel in Singapore, India, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Phyllis loved BYU Athletics, especially BYU Football. She was honored and pleased to be a Thursday's Hero and, thereby, an honorary part of the BYU Football program. She will always be remembered for her famous game cheer for the players to "Go around the end!" She revered Bronco Mendenhall and the team; they often referred to her as the "Matriarch of the team." Go Cougars!
Phyllis was a loving, patient and kind mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She tended and loved her grandchildren, and they all adored her. She was fun, sweet, good-natured, and always cheerful. She had the most amazing sense of humor and laughed easily. She also helped tend her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as long as she was able (and volunteered to tend them even up until the time of her death). She sewed for her children and home, she crocheted an afghan for each grandchild's wedding, and she was an amazing cook. She was known for her potato salad, pies, and roast beef dinners. All who knew Phyllis loved her; she was known as "Grandma Pete" to everyone. She provided suckers (along with a smile) to all the children who visited as well as all those who just knocked on her door.
Phyllis was an elect woman who possessed the gift of charity. She loved everyone and was totally without guile. She was always gracious and grateful to anyone who visited or helped her in any way. She was caring, thoughtful, talented, devoted, serving, and happy. No words can express how much she was loved and how much she will be missed by so many.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, her husband Russell, a son-in-law, two grandchildren and one great-grandson. She is survived by her children Judy (Johns {Dennis – deceased}) [Lindon], Jeannie (LaVorn) Sparks [Sundance], Jan (Bruce) Christensen [St. George], Julie (Robert) Deucher [Orem], Russ (Colleen) Peterson [Orem], and Rita (Taylor) [Springville]; 34 of her 36 grandchildren; and 117 of her 118 great-grandchildren.
The family is especially grateful for family members and neighbors (it took a village of them) who gave of their time and love to keep Mom/Grandma in her own home these last several years. The family wants to especially thank Carolina Espinosa for her angelic and tender care of Mom/Grandma, as well as Barbara Metaxas, Emilee Bird, and Carrol Grudzinski. We also thank many other employees of Envision Home Health and Hospice, as well as the many doctors who cared for her. She truly loved and appreciated all of you.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, March 6 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Walker Sanderson Mortuary located at 646 East 800 North in Orem. Services will be held Monday, March 7 in the Aspen Stake Center (985 West 2000 North, Orem) at 11:00 am, with a viewing prior beginning at 9:30 am. Interment will be in the Santaquin City Cemetery.
